GENESIS in 1983 began to dominate the music industry as a family while the solo activities of each member became active. Introducing a live album where you can experience the main body tour at its best.
It is “December 11, 1983 Greensboro performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is an excellent audience recording recorded in the first act of “THE MAMA Tour” accompanying “GENESIS”. As mentioned above, while Phil’s solo activities were activated during this period, Tony Banks also released a solo work. It was a time when activities gradually became complicated and overcrowded. This is GENESIS in 1983/1984. Although “THE MAMA Tour” is a world tour in appearance, it was actually limited to the three countries of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. The North American tour consisted of two parts with the year-end and New Year holidays in between, but the Greensboro performance of this work is the former. It was the 30th performance of “North America # 1”.
This show has been known for recording for a long time, but this work is known as the best among them. It is a digitalized product from the Omoto Master recorded with the “Marantz recorder + shure microphone” setting, and it is the highest peak version that is outstanding in terms of sound while completely recording the show. In fact, the sound is a beautiful recording with neat, clear, and vivid triple time signatures. According to the taper, it seems to be recorded from the nearest position, only 6 meters from the stage, and the direct feeling is tremendous. If you listen with headphones, you can see that there is a sense of space, but that also stops the tone. You can hardly feel the sound of the hall in the air that is clear to the fine parts, and the big cheers of the popular climax do not come in between the performance with the three-dimensional feeling that you carry from your back.
Moreover, this recorder is also devising another way to make the most of the direct feeling. This work is a type where the thick playing sound dominates everything, but at the recording stage it did not go to the iron wall, and it seems that there was a part that was bothered by the hustle and bustle of the surroundings. It seems that there was a lot of noise in some of the songs such as “Dodo” which was just opened and the highlights “Turn It On Again” and “Misunderstanding”, but those scenes were edited by another recording that was recorded simultaneously with Sony Walkman. .. It is a live album that records a full show of 2 hours and 37 minutes in a perfect system.
The full show is imposing because it is in the middle of a big hit. Speaking of the symbol of this tour, the name is Zubari’s official video “THE MAMA TOUR”, but it was also an incomplete recording that is common in video works at that time. Let’s organize the set while comparing here.

However, the show itself clearly emphasizes the latest hits, and thoroughly follows the recent two works “ABACAB” and “GENESIS”. In addition to the limited songs “Illegal Alien”, “Keep It Dark” and “It’s Gonna Get Better” only for this tour, “Dodo / Lurker”, “Man On The Corner”, “Who Dunnit?” You can also enjoy plenty of medley.
After such a full show, this work closes with the radio commercial “WKZL-FM Commercial” that announces the live performance. It is a 3-disc set with a perfect mood unique to 1983. GENESIS has been promoting pop music over a long history, but it was probably during the Hugh Padgham trilogy “ABACAB”, “GENESIS”, and “INVISIBLE TOUCH” that it accelerated. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1983年12月11日グリーンズボロ公演」。『GENESIS』に伴う“THE MAMA Tour”の一幕で記録された絶品オーディエンス録音です。前述の通り、この時期はフィルのソロ活動が活性化しつつ、トニー・バンクスもソロ作をリリース。徐々に活動が複雑&過密になってきた時期でした。その辺の事情も含め、まずは当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1983年/1984年のGENESIS。“THE MAMA Tour”は体裁としてはワールド・ツアーではあるものの、実際には英・米・カナダの3ヵ国限定でした。北米ツアーは年末年始を挟んだ二部構成になっていたわけですが、本作のグリーンズボロ公演は前者。「北米#1」の30公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウは以前から録音が知られてきましたが、本作はその中でもベストとして知られるもの。「Marantzレコーダー+shureマイク」セッティングで録音された大元マスターからデジタル化された銘品で、ショウを完全収録しつつ、サウンド面でも群を抜く最高峰版なのです。実際、そのサウンドは端正・クリア・鮮やかの三拍子揃った美録音。テーパーによるとステージからわずか6メートルという直近ポジションから録音したらしく、そのダイレクト感は絶大。ヘッドフォンで耳を済ませば空間感覚もあるのも分かるものの、それも音色止まり。微細部まで透き通った空気感にはホール鳴りもほとんど感じられず、人気絶頂の大歓声も背中から背負う立体感で演奏との間に入ってこないのです。
しかも、この録音家はダイレクト感を活かすもう一工夫も凝らしている。本作は極太の演奏音がすべてを支配するタイプなのですが、録音段階では鉄壁とは行かず、周囲の喧騒に煩わされるパートもあったそう。開園間もない「Dodo」やハイライトの「Turn It On Again」「Misunderstanding」といった曲の一部では雑音も多かったそうですが、そうしたシーンはソニーのウォークマンで同時録音していた別録音で編集。2時間37分に及ぶフルショウを万全の体制で記録したライヴアルバムになっているのです。
そのフルショウは、大ヒット真っ最中だからこその堂々たるもの。このツアーの象徴と言えば、その名もズバリの公式映像『THE MAMA TOUR』ですが、当時の映像作にありがちな不完全収録でもありました。ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式作『THE MAMA TOUR』は新曲のフィーチュアを狙っていたわけですが、本作はフルショウをあるがままに収録している。とは言え、ショウ自体も明らかに最新ヒット重視でして、近2作『ABACAB』『GENESIS』を徹底的にフォロー。このツアーだけの限定曲「Illegal Alien」「Keep It Dark」「It’s Gonna Get Better」の他、その後は演奏されなくなる「Dodo/Lurker」「Man On The Corner」「Who Dunnit?」、さらには3つのメドレーもたっぷりと楽しめるのです。
そんなフルショウの後、ライヴを告知するラジオCM「WKZL-FM Commercial」で幕を閉じる本作。1983年ならではのムード満点の3枚組です。長い歴史をかけてポップ化を推し進めていったGENESISですが、開き直ったように加速したのはヒュー・パジャム三部作『ABACAB』『GENESIS』『INVISIBLE TOUCH』時代だったでしょう。本作は、そんな絶頂に向けて一気に駆け上がっていった“THE MAMA Tour”を絶品体験できる娯楽大作。どうぞ、心ゆくまでたっぷりとご堪能ください。
