Gary Moore was about to make a big change in 2000, from an unusual electronic route to a return to the straight-forward blues. A soundboard album that is the masterpiece of such an era is now available.
What is engraved on this work is “Hamburg performance on March 13, 2000.” This is a stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of live performances from the “A DIFFERENT BEAT” era, “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999” in the official box “ESSENTIAL MONTREUX” is famous, but the timing and members of this work are slightly different. This story is also related to the content of the show, so let’s first look back at the outline of the activities at that time.

This is Gary Moore in 1999/2000. The official “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999” was also from the “A DIFFERENT BEAT” era, but even though the album was completed, it was “Europe #1” which had not been released yet. On the other hand, this work was released after the album was released. It was also the second concert of “Europe #3” where the drummer changed from Gary Husband to Darin Mooney to Graham Walker.
Such a show is also famous for being broadcast on FM, and it is a classic that has been popular since then. This work is also the same FM sound board, but it is a masterpiece that has been made into a CD from the highest peak master in the past. I think the most famous release at that time was “THE BLUES IS STARTING POINT (GE 150/151)”, but the song was changed and the sound was blurry with dubbing traces. In contrast, this work has been digitized directly from the original master recorded at that time, and the song order is correct and much clearer and vivid. Furthermore, it has been finished with its own meticulous mastering and has evolved into a completely different level from the previous releases.
Even though the sound has been reborn, the reality that is choked by the sense of the times remains the same. Since it’s a live broadcast-like mix (more precisely, it’s a rebroadcast version from the following year in 2001), it’s more like a radio album than a completely official mix, but there’s nothing wrong with that. The performance with no dubbing traces is very vivid, and just by playing it, it’s as if the atmosphere in the room is suddenly transported back 23 years.
What is depicted with such real FM sound is the true value of the “A DIFFERENT BEAT” era, which is often overlooked. As mentioned above, the symbolic work of this era is the official “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999”, but this work is overwhelming in terms of the number of songs. The official box “ESSENTIAL MONTREUX” is a 5-disc set that collects Montreux performances from each generation, so most of the songs that are not in “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999” are also recorded in other performances, but not all of them. “Lost In Your Love” and “Surrender”, which were only played during the “A DIFFERENT BEAT” era, can be said to be the standout of this work.
Furthermore, these two songs are definitely worth listening to. The studio version had a full electronic flavor and a sound that was difficult to get used to, but on stage, the four-piece band played their usual rock style. The groove of the human-powered beat is dynamic, and the original “rock coolness” of the song is exposed. “Cold Black Night” and “The Prophet” from the next work “BACK TO THE BLUES” have already been shown, but regardless of the arrangement on the surface, it is clear that Gary’s essence has not changed at all.
Gary Moore of the electronic era is currently seen as a “temporary lapse”. This work is a soundboard album that teaches you a valuable full show because it is a singular point in history, and it is the highest updated edition. The songs are in the correct order and the sound is clearly based on the best master, which is clearly vivid, and our store’s own meticulous mastering has greatly improved the sound. 異形のエレクトロニック路線から正道のブルース回帰へ……大きく舵を切ろうとしていた2000年のゲイリー・ムーア。そんな時代の最高傑作となるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に刻まれているのは「2000年３月13日ハンブルク公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。『A DIFFERENT BEAT』時代のライヴと言えば、公式ボックス『ESSENTIAL MONTREUX』内の『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999』が有名ですが、本作は時期もメンバーもちょっと違う。ショウ内容にも関係してくる話ですので、まずは当時の活動概要から振り返っておきましょう。

これが1999年／2000年のゲイリー・ムーア。公式『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999』も『A DIFFERENT BEAT』時代はあるのですが、アルバムは完成していてもまだ発売していない「欧州#1」でした。それに対して本作はアルバム発売後。それもドラマーがゲイリー・ハズバンド→ダリン・ムーニー→グラハム・ウォーカーと交代した「欧州#3」の２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウはFM放送されたことでも有名で、当時から既発が人気を呼んで来た定番。本作も同じFMサウンドボードでありつつ、過去最高峰マスターからCD化された名品なのです。当時の既発で最も有名なのは『THE BLUES IS STARTING POINT（GE 150/151）』だと思いますが、曲は変更され、サウンドもダビング痕が感じられるボケたものでした。それに対し、本作は当時録音された大元マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化されており、曲順も正しく格段にくっきり鮮やか。さらに独自の細心マスタリングでヌケ良く仕上げており、既発群とはまったくの別物級に進化しています。
サウンドは生まれ変わっても、時代感にむせ返るリアリティはそのまま。生放送っぽいミックス（正確には翌2001年の再放送版）だけに完全オフィシャル級というよりはラジオ・アルバム風ではありますが、それが悪かろうハズもない。ダビング痕のない演奏が非常にビビッドですし、再生するだけで部屋中の大気が一気に23年前へ引き戻されるかのようです。
そんなリアルFMサウンドで描かれるのは、見逃されがちな『A DIFFERENT BEAT』時代の真価。前述のように、この時代の象徴作は公式『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999』ですが、本作は曲数ボリュームからして圧倒している。比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式ボックス『ESSENTIAL MONTREUX』は各年代のモントルー公演を集めた５枚組だけに『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999』にない曲もほとんどが他公演で押さえられたりするのですが、全部とは行かない。『A DIFFERENT BEAT』時代にしか演奏していない「Lost In Your Love」「Surrender」は本作の独壇場と言っても良いのです。
しかも、この２曲が間違いなく聴きどころ。スタジオ版ではエレクトロニックな味付けが全開で馴染みにくいサウンドでしたが、ステージでは４人編成バンドによるいつも通りのロック仕様。人力ビートのグルーヴはダイナミックで、曲が本来持っていた「ロックなカッコ良さ」が丸出し。早くも次作『BACK TO THE BLUES』の「Cold Black Night」「The Prophet」も披露されていますが、表面上のアレンジはどうあれ、ゲイリーの本質はまったく変わっていない事がよく分かります。
