The 50th anniversary tour first toured the United States and Europe, Clapton’s biggest markets, but along the way he also hosted the Crossroads Guitar Festival, which he sponsored, and was busy with preparations and performers. The second half was full of representative songs, accented by rare numbers such as Blues Power and Love In Vain, and Blues Power was the first set-in in 28 years (since the 1985 tour). It’s a pretty hateful composition, with the venue getting excited with that 70’s groove, and then cooling down with Robert Johnson’s Love In Vain. The highlight of the second half is Little Queen of Spades. Clapton’s play here is too amazing! The solos given to each member are also worth listening to, but Clapton’s solo at the end is just so intense. This was the first year that we installed High Time We Went featuring Paul Carrack at the encore last. It was Clapton’s typical consideration to let talented guest musicians shine (this tour was the first time Carrack was used, and this pattern has continued to this day). 50周年記念ツアーとしてはまず、クラプトンにとっては最大のマーケットであるアメリカとヨーロッパを回ったわけですが、途中、自身が主催する「クロスロード・ギター・フェスティバル」も開催するなど、その準備と出演者の交渉なども含めれば、かなり精力的に活動した一年だったと言えます。その中にあって、ロンドン公演は、ツアーの中盤に当たる5月17日、18日、20日、21日、23日、24日、26日の7日間に亘って行なわれました。本盤はその初日を収録しています。このツアーの聴き所は、セットリストの変化にありました。76年ツアー以来となるHello Old Friendを37年ぶりにオープニングナンバーで披露したことがまず驚きで、76年時と同じく、マーティンを抱えてのスタンディングでステージを始めるという、サプライズでした。そして続くMy Father’s Eyesもアコギでプレイするというアレンジの変更。これが凄く新鮮です。リリースしたばかりの新作「OLD SOCK」からは最もポップなナンバーGotta Get Overをプレイ。当時のオーディエンスレビューでは、このナンバーでの演奏への賛辞が見られました。聴いていただければ分かりますが、スタジオバージョンよりはるかにグルーヴィーでライブ映えするナンバーと化しています。そしてアコースティックセットを中盤に配しながら、50周年に相応しい代表曲を組みつつ、しっかりオールドブルースもセットインさせながら、ソロアーティストとしての実績もあるポール・キャラックを中盤とアンコールでフィーチャーするという、納得と驚きの両方を伴う内容となっていました。このロンドン公演だけでも6パターンのセットリストで行なわれ、つまりほぼ毎公演でセットリストが変わっていたということだったのです。アコースティックセット前の前半のハイライトは、まずドミノス時代のナンバーGot To Get Better In A Little Whileでした。この曲では、スティーヴ・ジョーダン＆ウィリー・ウィークスという超一流のセッションマンによるリズムセクションが冴え渡ったパフォーマンスで、彼らに煽られてクラプトンも火を噴くようなソロをプレイしています。中盤のアコースティックセットでは、「OLD SOCK」収録で、クラプトンがキャリアで何度もプレイしてきたお気に入りのナンバーGoodnight Ireneを演奏したこと、Wonderful Tonightがアコースティックバージョンで披露されていることが貴重です。後半は代表曲が目白押しの中で、Blues Power、Love In Vainといったレアなナンバーがアクセントになっており、Blues Powerは、何と28年ぶり（85年ツアー以来）のセットインでした。70年代のあのノリノリのグルーヴで場内を沸かせておいて、ロバート・ジョンソンのLove In Vainでクールダウンさせるところなど、なかなか憎い構成です。後半のハイライトはLittle Queen of Spadesです。ここでのクラプトンのプレイは凄過ぎます！各メンバーに回されるソロも聴きものですが、最後に締めるクラプトンのソロがとにかく強烈です。アンコールラストにポール・キャラックをフィーチャーしたHigh Time We Wentを据えたのはこの年が最初でした。実力のあるゲストミュージシャンに華を持たせるのがクラプトンらしい気遣いでした（キャラックの起用はこのツアーが最初で、以降このパターンは現在までも続いています）。こうして全編を観ていきますと、クリーム時代、ドミノス時代のキャリア初期を彩ったナンバーから、ソロでヒットさせた人気曲もプレイし、そこにクラプトンらしいブルースを忘れず挿むという構成は、50周年記念ツアーに相応しい、聴き所満載のセットリストだったと言えます。
【このツアーだけの豪華な実力派ミュージシャンの起用】
このツアーでは、クラプトンをサポートするミュージシャンとしては最高峰の人たち、ドイル・ブラムホール二世、ウィリー・ウィークス、スティーヴ・ジョーダン、クリス・スティントンらに加え、アルバム「OLD SOCK」に参加した、ペダル・スティールとマンドリンをプレイするグレッグ・リースとイギリスのベテランシンガー兼キーボーディスト、ポール・キャラックが参加していました。彼ら二人の参加により、楽曲の幅が拡がり、カントリー色、ソウル色が付与される結果となりました。それが顕著なのは序盤のMy Father’s Eyes。98年～01年ツアーとは異なるアコースティックなアレンジでプレイされたこの曲は、また一味違った魅力を醸し出しています。グレッグ・リースはペダル・スティールでオープニングから大活躍ですし、この曲では、ジョーダンがチューニングを高くしたスネアに入れ替えて叩いていたのも細かな配慮と言えます。そしてポール・キャラックをフィーチャーしたHigh Time We Went。この曲はジョー・コッカーのカバーですが、キャラックのソウルフルなボーカルがはまったナンバーで、クラプトンがサビのコーラスのみ歌い、ギターソロを挿むという構成も、セッションプレイに長けたクラプトンの一面を見せた瞬間でした。全員が実力あるプレイヤーだっただけに、出てくるサウンドの質、厚みは現代においては最高レベルのもの。彼らはアコースティックセットでも見事なサポートぶりを披露し、まったく隙のないステージを作り上げています。忘れてはならないのが、2004年以来ずっとバックコーラスを務めるミシェル・ジョンとシャロン・ホワイトの女性二人。彼女らのパワフルなコーラスワークは、当時の新曲Gotta Get Overをスタジオバージョン以上にパワーアップさせています。それによりこのナンバーが、より活き活きとした魅力に溢れることに繋がりました。地元ロンドンでの初日公演。デビュー50周年を地元のファンと共に祝ったクラプトンの集大成的ステージは、ミュージシャン全員の勝利だったことが本作でお分かりいただけるのではないかと思います。ひょっとすると、クラプトンはこのツアー、このステージを経て、ツアーからの引退を考え直したかもしれません。そう思えるほど、彼自身も楽しみ、充実した一夜だったことはここに明らかです。極上画質と音声で鑑賞する50周年記念ツアーの記念すべき本作を是非コレクションに加えていただければと思います。
