Eric Clapton’s latest US tour started on the 8th of this month, the first since the “Jeff Beck Memorial Concert” held on May 22nd and 23rd. 5月22日、23日に行なわれた「ジェフ・ベック追悼コンサート」以来となる、エリック・クラプトンの最新USツアーが今月8日からスタートしました。このツアーは3月下旬に告知されたもので、健康状態も良く、やる気満々のクラプトンが4月の日本公演前に既にブッキングしていたものです。本作は短期の5公演ツアーの最終目となったデンヴァー公演を良好なステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録したものです。少しステージとの距離は感じさせますが、録音機材が優れていたようで、クリアでサウンドバランスも良好に録音されています。ファンの方なら既にご存じでしょうが、このツアーの注目ポイントは、先日亡くなった親友ミュージシャン、ロビー・ロバートソンを追悼するため、セットの冒頭にロビー作のザ・バンドの楽曲を2曲プレイしたことでした。クラプトンによるザ・バンドのカバー！これはクラプトンファンならずともザ・バンドのファンも聴いてみたいものかもしれません。2曲とも、クラプトンが一人で一生懸命歌っています。これを聴くと、本当にロビーへの想いを込めているのだなあと実感されることでしょう。もちろん両曲ではギターソロも弾いていまして、このフレージングにもクラプトンの気持ちがこもっているように感じます。The Shape I’m Inについては、2010年5月のスティーヴ・ウィンウッドとのジョイントツアーの初期でプレイしたことがありましたので、その時のフィーリングを再現しています。2曲ともオリジナルバージョンでは故リチャード・マニュエルと故リック・ダンコがリードボーカルをとっていましたので、二人とも親友だったクラプトンとすれば、まさにお気に入りの2曲だったのでしょうし、格好の選曲だったと言えます。It Makes No Difference終了後には、クラプトンが「Robbie Robertson !」とコールしています。オーディエンスに「彼を忘れないでくれ」というメッセージでしょう。短期ツアーではありましたが、このツアーに込めたクラプトンの想いというものを本作から感じ取っていただけるでしょう。

公演数が僅か5回に限られていただけに、観ることができたファンはラッキーだったでしょう。しかもこのツアーだけの限定セットリストだったわけですから。本公演は最終公演だっただけに、このツアーの総仕上げ的な意気込みで行なわれたことが窺えます。バンドパーソネルは4月の日本公演時からは、セカンドギターのドイル・ブラムホールに代わってアンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウが参加しているという変化があります。アンディも徹底したサポートぶりに定評のある人ですので、安定感抜群のパフォーマンスを本作でも聴くことができます。録音者自身は、ソニー・エモリーのドラムでのクラプトンバンドを観るのは初めてだったようで、彼のドラムを「モンスター」と表現して称えています。アース・ウィンド・アンド・ファイヤー等で鳴らした彼のキャリアに裏付けられたテクニカルなドラミングは、そう呼ぶに相応しいもので、クラプトンのパフォーマンスをしっかり支え、迫力満点で演出しています。また録音者はクラプトンのプレイについても「失望させなかった。素晴らしかった。」とコメントしています。ここにきてクラプトンはまた元気になっているようです。セットリスト的には、ザ・バンドのカバーが最注目ですが、Tearin’ Us Apartを再びセットインさせていることにも注目です。クラプトン自身のお気に入りナンバーでもあるのでしょう、アップテンポでバンドの勢いを感じさせるこの曲をアコースティックセット明けの1曲目に持ってきていることで、再びエレクトリックセットを活気づけることに成功しています。オリジナルバージョンではティナ・ターナーのパートだったセカンドコーラスを、バックコーラスのケイティ・キスーンが歌っています。ケイティ再加入前の近年の公演でこの曲がセットインした際にはシャロン・ホワイトが歌っていたのですが、90年のジャーニーマン・ツアーでもこのパートを務めていた先輩シンガー、ケイティに譲った形です。また、I Shot The Sheriffの後奏のソロも聴きごたえたっぷりです。ここでもクラプトンの意気込みが分かるほどで、シャープなフレーズが矢継ぎ早に畳みかけられ、息をも継がさぬ展開となっています。さらに日本公演同様、J.J.ケイルへの追悼としてCall Me The Breezeがアコースティックセットでプレイされています。近年のクラプトンのコンサートには言えることですが、カバー曲についてはすべて作者への追悼の気持ちが込められています。そうした先達たちのおかげで自分のキャリアが築けてきたのだというクラプトンらしい謙虚さの現れと言ってもいいかもしれません。アンコールのHigh Time We Wentには、このツアーのオープニングアクトを務めたクラプトンの親友ギタリスト、ジミー・ヴォーンが飛入り参加しており、さらなる聴きどころとなっています。ジミーもクラプトン同様に高齢、現在のクラプトンとすれば、友と共演できる機会があるなら、出来る限り実現したいと考えているように思えます。多くの友人を失いつつも、彼らへの想いを込めて円熟、枯淡の境地でのパフォーマンスを繰り広げるクラプトン。今月16日に行なわれた公演の音源が早くも登場です！湯気が上がるほど録れたてホカホカの最新音源をどうぞお楽しみください。
