David Lindley passed away on March 3, 2023. He was 78 years old. The exact cause of his death has not been made public, but he has been reporting pneumonia and kidney disease for several months. It seems that the obituary was in the middle of a call for donations for his medical expenses. Currently, images of the past are attracting attention as if they were reminiscent of Lindley. Among them, the video version of the “TWANGO BANGO” series, which was also a combination era with Wally Ingram, is now available.
This work was filmed at the “Basel performance on November 10, 2000”. It is a multi-camera pro shot when appearing at the famous music festival “AVO SESSION” in Switzerland. Speaking of 2000, not only was the first “TWANGO BANGO DELUXE” with Wally released, but it was also the most active time for duo tour activities. This is David Lindley & Wally Ingram in 2000. The main tour was “Europe #1” in the spring, and the style was to release “TWANGO BANGO DELUXE” against the backdrop of its success. The appearance of “AVO SESSION” of this work will be after that. It was the first day of “Europe #2”, which was held four months after the album was released.

Wally Ingram, who used a normal drum kit as the main axis and added percussion, was powerful and versatile. Depending on your taste, I think it was Lindley’s best partner. 2023年３月３日、デヴィッド・リンドレー永眠。享年78歳でした。詳しい死因は公表されていませんが、数ヶ月前から肺炎や腎疾患も報道。治療費のための募金が呼びかけられている最中の訃報だったようです。現在、そんなリンドレーを偲ぶかのように在りし日の映像が話題を集めている。その中でワリー・イングラムとのコンビ時代でもあった『TWANGO BANGO』シリーズの映像篇が登場です。
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2000年11月10日バーゼル公演」。スイスの名物音楽祭“AVO SESSION”に出演した際のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。2000年と言えば、ワリーとの第一弾『TWANGO BANGO DELUXE』がリリースされただけでなく、デュオでのツアー活動も最も活発な時期でした。まずは、そんな当時の活動概要を俯瞰してみましょう。

これが2000年のデヴィッド・リンドレー＆ワリー・イングラム。ツアーのメインは春の「欧州#1」で、その成功を背景に『TWANGO BANGO DELUXE』をリリースするスタイルでした。本作の“AVO SESSION”出演は、その後。アルバム発売から４ヶ月を経て行われた「欧州#2」の初日でした。
そんなショウは有名フェスだけあってTV放送。本作は、当時記録された極上エアチェック・マスターからDVD化されたものです。その映像美はまさに絶品。マスター鮮度が衝撃的でして、テープヨレやダビング痕、白線ノイズなどの劣化がまるで見られず、艶やかな画面がとにかく美しい。時代柄アナログ画質なので現代基準で「オフィシャル級！」と呼ぶかは迷うものの、当時基準なら全力で言い切れる。と申しますか、「レーザーディスクで公式リリースされてたっけ？」と再確認したくなる映像美です。

通常のドラム・キットを主軸にパーカッションを盛り込んだワリー・イングラムは、パワフルにして多彩。好みにもよりますが、リンドレーのベスト・パートナーだったのではないでしょうか。本作は、そんな名コンビの最盛期を約１時間たっぷりと味わえる映像作品です。まさに『TWANGO BANGO DELUXE』『TWANGO BANGO II』と同等の価値を誇る映像篇。どうぞ、ベスト・マスターの本作で存分にご堪能ください。
