The unit EL & POWELL is a miracle that embodies the ideal of the keyboard trio in the gorgeous 80’s. The new masterpiece is here.
It is “November 1, 1986 San Diego performance” that is imbued with such a work. This is an excellent audience recording that recorded a famous performance that Cozy Powell himself described as “9.5 out of 10”. EL & POWELL is a foamy unit that disappeared after only one work “EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL” and one US tour, even though it boasted a band potential that was so miraculous. At our shop, we have archived that process with various masterpiece Clive albums. First, let’s look back at the schedule at that time and organize the collection.

This is the history of EL & POWELL. In addition to this, studio demos and tour rehearsals associated with the album production have also been excavated, but this is the end of the public US tour. Among them, the San Diego performance of this work is the final edition. It was the penultimate concert.
This work recorded at such a show is a great recording with a wonderfully clear chest. It’s not the type that is mistaken for a sound board in terms of tone, but the air is transparent and the hall sound gives an exquisite dynamism to the core, and it does not hide the details at all. In particular, the treble is as good as it feels, and it is even refreshing. As a matter of fact, this recording has been distributed before, but this work is a new excavation master different from it. The existing group used Kinkin mastering to deceive the Gene drop, but this work is clear and beautiful without any processing, and the fresh naturalness is even more wonderful.
The ensemble that the miracle unit arrived at is a wonderful full show that is drawn with such a fresh and clear sound. Speaking of EL & POWELL, FM broadcasting of Lakeland performances reigns as a big standard, but that is an incomplete version edited according to the broadcasting frame (currently officialized, but cut further than broadcasting It was a short edit that was done). It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s organize it while comparing it here.

… And it looks like this. The masterpieces that cannot be heard on the sound board are delicious, but the performance itself is more than that. As I mentioned at the beginning, Cozy at that time kept a diary every day, and the results of the nightly show were also scored there. According to it, the result of this day was “9.5 points / 10 points”. What flows out of this work is an enthusiastic performance that supports its self-evaluation. If you listen to each person’s performance, the tight phrases and side dishes will continue continuously, and if you spread your consciousness to the entire ensemble, you will be breathless for the first time on an iron wall without skis. It was definitely a foam unit, but it has evolved rapidly during its short history, and its final form, the breathing sensation, is wonderful.
However, it is the big song “Pirates” that becomes “?” In Cozy’s self-evaluation. It skips smoothly for about 10 minutes, but the keyboard sound suddenly disappears at the climax. The performance itself collapses with only the drums. Apparently there was a problem with the equipment, and Keith took the MC of the explanation and checked the sound. After a while, only the ending will be restarted. The trouble is not so long, and I can regain the original tension immediately after restarting, but it is also a tohoho. Even if this work is a “hot performance”, it cannot be called a “masterpiece” (Is it because Cozy says “Isn’t it my fault” that the high score is given even if there is a problem?).
How far has the miracle unit EL & POWELL evolved? This work is a sound proof that recorded the answer. In the first place, it was an immeasurable band only with the official album, but the final point can not be known without listening to this work. A new excavation with a wonderful listening response that transcends the dimension of simply an excellent live album. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★ Excellent audience recording of “November 1, 1986 San Diego performance”. It is a new excavation master of younger generation than the existing one, and the clearness of the chest is wonderful. The air is transparent and the sound of the hall gives the core an exquisite dynamism and does not hide the details at all. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1986年11月１日サンディエゴ公演」。コージー・パウエル自身が「10点満点中9.5点」と評した名演を記録した絶品オーディエンス録音です。EL&POWELLは、あまりにも奇跡的なまでのバンド・ポテンシャルを誇っていたにも関わらず、唯一作『EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL』と米国ツアー１回のみで消滅した泡沫のユニット。当店では、その歩みをさまざまな傑作クライヴアルバムでアーカイヴしてきました。まずは、当時のスケジュールを振り返り、そのコレクションを整理してみましょう。

これがEL&POWELLの歩み。この他にもアルバム制作に伴うスタジオ・デモやツアー・リハーサルなども発掘されていますが、公の全米ツアーは以上です。この中でも本作のサンディエゴ公演は最終盤。最後から２番目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、胸のすくクリアさが素晴らしい名録音。音色的にサウンドボードと間違えるタイプではありませんが、空気感が透き通っていてホール鳴りも芯に絶妙なダイナミズムを与こそすれ、まったくディテールを隠さない。特に高音は気持ちイイほどよくヌケ、清々しくさえあるのです。実のところ、この録音は以前にも流通した事のあるのですが、本作はそれとは異なる新発掘マスター。既発群はジェネ落ちをキンキン・マスタリングで誤魔化していましたが、本作は加工せずともクリアで美しく、瑞々しいナチュラルさが一層素晴らしいのです。
そんなフレッシュ＆クリアなサウンドで描かれるのは、奇跡のユニットがたどり着いたアンサンブルも素晴らしいフルショウ。EL&POWELLと言えば、レイクランド公演のFM放送が大定番として君臨しておりますが、あれは放送枠に沿って編集された不完全版（現在では公式化も実現していますが、放送より更にカットされた短尺編集でした）。良い機会でもありますので、ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。サウンドボードでも聴けない名曲群も美味しいですが、それ以上なのが演奏そのもの。冒頭でも触れましたが、当時のコージーは日記を毎日付けていまして、そこには毎晩のショウの出来も点数化していました。それによるとこの日の出来は「9.5点/10点」。本作から流れ出るのは、その自己評価を裏付けるような熱演なのです。１人ひとりの演奏に耳を傾ければビシッと締まったフレーズやオカズが絶え間なく続き、アンサンブル全体に意識を広げるとスキのない鉄壁ぶりにタメ息が漏れる。間違いなく泡沫のユニットではあったのですが、その短い歴史の間にも急速に進化しており、その最終形とも言える呼吸感が素晴らしいのです。
ただし、コージーの自己評価に「？」となってしまうのが大曲「Pirates」。10分ほどは快調にかっ飛ばしていくのですが、いよいよクライマックス……というところでキーボード音が突如消滅。ドラムだけになって演奏そのものが崩壊してしまうのです。どうやら機材トラブルらしく、キースが釈明のMCを執ってサウンドチェック。しばらくしてエンディングだけ再スタートするのです。トラブルもそう長くはなく、再開した後もすぐに元のテンションを取り戻しはするのですが、何ともトホホでもある。本作が「熱演」であっても「名演」とは呼べない由縁なのです（トラブルがあっても高得点なのは、コージーからしたら「別に俺のせいじゃないし」といったところなのでしょうか）。
奇跡のユニットEL&POWELLは、一体どこまで進化していたのか。本作は、その答えを記録した音の証拠品。そもそも公式アルバムだけでは計り知れないバンドではありましたが、その最終点は本作を聴かなければ分からないのです。単に優れたライヴアルバムという次元を超えた聴き応えが素晴らしい新発掘。どうぞ、存分に味わい尽くしてください。
