A reenactment tour of the historic masterpiece “HOTEL CALIFORNIA”, which has been postponed repeatedly due to the new Corona Pandemic. The latest live album that tells the scene that has finally resumed has arrived.
It is “August 25, 2021 New York performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is a superb audience recording recorded at the traditional large venue “Madison Square Garden”. The official tour title this time is “HOTEL CALIFORNIA 2020 Tour”, but the reproduction concert started in 2019. In order to explain the situation in that area, let’s take a look at the schedule for the last three years.

This is THE EAGLES from 2019 to 2021. The last report at our shop was “AMSTERDAM 2019 (Uxbridge 1056)”, but the only reproduction stage announced at that time was “North America # 1 (Las Vegas)”. After that, the schedule for 2020, which will be the main part of the tour, was announced along with the tour title “HOTEL CALIFORNIA 2020 Tour”. However, as soon as the tour actually started, a terrible pandemic occurred. It was postponed after only 10 performances (North America # 2). Only recently has the tour finally resumed after repeated postponements. The MSG performance was the first two days, and it was the second performance in which this work was recorded.
By the way, this work, which is a vacuum-packed show, is a famous recording that depicts the “best” in the picture. Speaking of “Madison Square Garden”, it is a world-famous venue, but it is famous as a difficult place only for audience recording. It’s hard to wrap around, and even the latest recordings tend to be blurry and futanari. However, this work is wonderful to dispel such “common sense of MSG” at once. The famous machine “Schoeps Mk41”, which is a purveyor to the master taper, is used, and the extra-thick core reaches the ear straight without a time lag, and there is no sense of distance or squishy. Moreover, the details are super-Katsuaki. If you listen with headphones, you can see that the hall sound is also sucked in, but even if it is strangely transparent and glossy, it does not hide the details. Even if the choruses overlap, the vocals are clear to each word of the lyrics, and the guitar is clear to the nuances of picking. I have dealt with MSG recordings of various bands / artists only in the traditional large venue, but honestly I do not remember the beautiful and vivid sound so much.
And the content of the show drawn with such beautiful sound is the life of this work. Only the reproduction of the daimyo board has been talked about, but that is the first part of the show. In the second part after the reproduction, a normal style Greatest Hits Show is unfolded. What’s more, it’s amazing because the second part alone has the scale of a normal full show. Speaking of live after participating in Deacon Fly / Vince Gill, the official board “LIVE FROM THE FORUM MMXVIII” is famous, so let’s organize it while comparing.

Even the official version “LIVE FROM THE FORUM MMXVIII”, which had 26 songs and 2 hours and 18 minutes, seemed to be a big volume, but that was not the case. It’s a big show where you’re playing all the songs you’re looking for, rather than “which song you’re playing”.
This work is a live album for one stage, but the response is rather “Hotel California + best compilation album”. It is no exaggeration to say that this one is packed with everything you can expect from the current formation. The latest report, the ultimate 3-disc set with sound, performance and set. 新型コロナ・パンデミックにより延期が繰り返されてきた、歴史的大名盤『HOTEL CALIFORNIA』の再現ツアー。遂に再開された現場を伝える最新ライヴアルバムが到着です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2021年８月25日ニューヨーク公演」。伝統の大会場“マディソン・スクエア・ガーデン”で記録された極上オーディエンス録音です。今回の正式なツアー・タイトルは“HOTEL CALIFORNIA 2020 Tour”ですが、再現コンサートが始まったのは2019年から。その辺の事情をご説明するためにも、ここ３年間のスケジュールから紐解いてみましょう。

これが2019年ー2021年のTHE EAGLES。当店で最後のレポートしたのは『AMSTERDAM 2019（Uxbridge 1056）』でしたが、その時点で発表されていた再現ステージは「北米#1（ラスヴェガス）」のみ。その後、ツアータイトル“HOTEL CALIFORNIA 2020 Tour”と共にツアー本編となる2020年の日程が公表されました。しかし、実際にツアーが始まった途端に忌々しいパンデミックが発生。わずか10公演（北米#2）をこなしたところで延期となってしまいました。度重なる延期の末、遂にツアーが再開されたのがつい最近。MSG公演はその冒頭２日間で、本作が記録されたその２公演目でした。
さて、そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、まさに「極上」を画に描いたような名録音。“マディソン・スクエア・ガーデン”と言えば、世界的にも著名な会場ですが、ことオーディエンス録音に限っては難所として有名。回り込みがキツく、最新録音でもボケボケ・ボワボワ二なりがちなのです。ところが、本作はそんな「MSGの常識」を一気に払拭する素晴らしさ。達人テーパー御用達となっている名機「Schoeps Mk41」が使用され、極太な芯がタイムラグなしに耳元へ真っ直ぐ届き、距離感もスカスカ感もまったくない。しかも、ディテールが超・克明。ヘッドフォンで聴けばホール鳴りも吸い込んでいるのが分かるのですが、それが妙に透き通っていて艶にはなってもディテールを隠さない。ヴォーカルはコーラスが重なっても歌詞の一語一語までハッキリ、ギターはピッキングのニュアンスまでクッキリ。伝統の大会場だけに、さまざまなバンド／アーティストのMSG録音を扱ってきましたが、正直ここまで美しく鮮やかなサウンドはちょっと記憶にありません。
そして、そんな美音で描かれるショウ内容こそが本作の命。大名盤の再現ばかりが話題となっておりますが、それはあくまでショウの第一部。再現後の第二部には、通常スタイルのグレイテストヒッツ・ショウが繰り広げられているのです。しかも、第二部だけで普通のフルショウほどのスケール感なのですから凄い。ディーコン・フライ／ヴィンス・ギル参加後のライヴと言えば、公式盤『LIVE FROM THE FORUM MMXVIII』が有名ですから、比較しながら整理してみましょう。
