Forty-five years have passed since the debut of the single “Mongoloid”, and next year DEVO is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Introducing the finest set that allows you to fully experience their latest stage.
This work contains two stages of one event. This is a 2-disc set with the best recording of “May 14, 2022 Pasadena performance” on DISC 1 and the next “May 15” superb view video on DISC 2. We don’t have many opportunities to introduce DEVO, so let’s take a broader look at their recent situation.

This is the schedule after 2021 that has been announced so far. It was the first stage in two years at the time of “North America # 1”, but even after that, there was not enough density to call it a tour, and it was a sporadic live from beginning to end. Under such circumstances, the Pasadena performance of this work was a concert that was the second / third performance of “North America # 2”. This show is not a solo performance of DEVO, but an appearance in the newly launched “CRUEL WORLD FESTIVAL”. A new wave / post-punk festival with Morrissey, BAUHAUS, PiL, BLONDIE, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, etc., originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but postponed by the new Corona Pandemic and finally realized this year. It was carried.
This work, which vacuum-packed such a scene, has the best live album and video. First of all, the live album version (May 14th), the core of zero reverberation jumps directly into the outdoor venue where there are no walls or ceilings that reflect sound, and it is awesome to go on the “sound board” on the ground. Of course, it’s not as easy as it sounds outdoors, and if you’re far from the PA, you’ll get sick, and if you pick up the wind noise, you won’t be able to see it. However, there is no worry about this work. Far from the wind noise, there is not even a slight sway.
The sound of the video version (May 15) instead is also extremely advanced. Although it has an audience-like tone compared to the first day (DISC 1) due to the angle priority, it is still very thick and direct (you can also see that the trees at the site did not move at all and it was completely windless). .. And more than that is the sight. I caught the stage from the back of the venue with a single turtle, and this is a wonderful view. Although the audience spreads forward, the line of sight is high enough to pass overhead, and the audience looks directly at the stage regardless of whether they raise their arms or jump. What’s more, thanks to the view that fits into the huge screen, you can enjoy the video production that has been disciplined. Despite being a one-camera, it is versatile enough to be a multi-camera / professional shot class, and you can also enjoy the experience of being a one-camera. It is also an image that embodies one ideal form of audience shot.
The best live album / superb view video is a two-part performance with two parts that sprinkle the classic songs of the past. Both sets are the same, so let’s organize them together here.

… And it looks like this. The show starts with “Don’t Shoot (I’m A Man)”, but everything else is a golden repertoire from 1979 to 1982. The segregation is also clear, the first half is selected from three works in the early 1980s, and the second half after changing costumes concentrates and reduces “Degraded Aesthetics” and “Duty Now for the Future”.
DISC 1 is a superb live album that ideally combines the 2022 PA, recording equipment, and the taste of the outdoors, and DISC 2 is a one-camera shot that even the on-site screen is attached to allies. It is a superb 2-disc set that allows you to fully experience the latest stage in 2 performances with the highest quality of the audience record. This is the 2022 DEVO. シングル『Mongoloid』でのデビューから45年が経ち、来年は結成50周年を迎えようとしているDEVO。そんな彼らの最新ステージをフル体験できる極上セットが登場です。
本作に収められているのは１つのイベントの２つのステージ。「2022年５月14日パサデナ公演」の極上録音をDISC 1に、翌「５月15日」の絶景映像をDISC 2に配した２枚組です。当店ではDEVOをご紹介する機会も少ないですので、まずは彼らの近況を少し広めに俯瞰してみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2021年以降のスケジュール。「北米#1」の時点で２年ぶりのステージだったわけですが、その後もツアーと呼べるほどの密度はなく、散発的なライヴに終始。そんな中で本作のパサデナ公演は「北米#2」の２公演目／３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。このショウはDEVOの単独公演ではなく、新たに立ち上げられた“CRUEL WORLD FESTIVAL”への出演。モリッシーやBAUHAUS、PiL、BLONDIE、ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN等も参加したニューウェーヴ／ポスト・パンク系の新フェスで、当初は2020年開催の予定でしたが新型コロナ・パンデミックによって延期され、今年ようやく実現の運びとなったのです。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は、ライヴアルバムも映像も極上。まずライヴアルバム篇（５月14日）ですが、音を反射する壁も天井もない野外会場だけに反響ゼロの芯がダイレクトに飛びこみ、「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行く凄まじさ。もちろん野外なら極上なるほど簡単な話ではなく、ＰＡから距離があればスカスカになってしまいますし、風音を拾ってしまったら目も当てられない。しかし、本作にその心配はゼロ。風音どころかわずかな音揺れさえもありません。
代わっての映像篇（５月15日）のサウンドも極上級。アングル優先の関係で初日（DISC 1）に比べるとオーディエンス的な音色ではあるものの、極太＆ダイレクトであることに変わりはありません（現場の木々がまったく動かず、完全に無風だった事も分かります）。そして、それ以上なのが光景。ステージを正面に見すえた会場後方からワンカメで捉えているのですが、これが素晴らしく絶景。前方には観客も広がるものの、目線はその遙か頭上を素通りするほど高く、観客が腕を振り上げようがジャンプしようがまったく影響されずにステージを直視。しかも、巨大スクリーンまですっぽり入る視界のお陰で懲りに懲りまくった映像演出も漏らさず楽しめる。ワンカメにも関わらずマルチカメラ・プロショット級に多彩さですし、ワンカメだからこその体験感もあじわえる。オーディエンス・ショットの１つの理想形を体現した映像でもあります。
そんな極上ライヴアルバム／絶景映像で描かれるのは、二部構成で往年の名曲を振りまく丸２公演。どちらもセットは同一ですので、ここでまとめて整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ショウは「Don’t Shoot (I’m A Man)」でスタートしますが、他はすべて1979年ー1982年の黄金レパートリー。棲み分けもハッキリとしており、前半は80年代初期の３作からセレクトされており、衣装替えを経た後半は『頽廃的美学論』『生存学未来編』 を濃縮還元しているのです。
2022年のＰＡと録音機材、そして野外の旨みが理想的に融合した極上ライヴアルバムであるDISC 1、現場スクリーンまで味方に付けたワンカメ・ショットのDISC 2。オーディエンス記録の最高峰となるクオリティで最新ステージを２公演丸ごとフル体験できる極上２枚組です。これぞ、2022年のDEVO。どうぞ、本作でお腹いっぱいお楽しみください。
