This work was shot at “September 15, 1996 Kyiv performance”. That multi-camera pro shot. This video was released as a gift title the other day and became very popular. Some people said that the quality that was the highest peak in the “PURPENDICULAR” era and the taste of Eastern Europe were wonderful, and that it was a waste for a one-week gift. Therefore, we have decided to release it as a standard title of the Shades label, which is always easy to obtain.
Actually, Uklana is a rock underdeveloped country in Eastern Europe. Poland and Hungary, which had been open since the 1980s, were slower than the Soviet Union’s Honmaru Russia. DEEP PURPLE first landed in Ukraine in 1996, a milestone for his country. At that time, SCORPIONS, who had already become a music ambassador for URIAH HEEP and “Wind Of Change”, had established popularity in Eastern Europe, but it was faster than both bands. It was exactly the first meeting with “hard rock”.
Also, from the perspective of DEEP PURPLE history, this work is also a representative image of the “PURPENDICULAR” era immediately after joining Steve Morse. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s look back at the schedule at the time and check the position of the show.

This work recorded at such a show is a quality professional shot with perfect quality and can be officialized as it is with image quality and sound quality. Not only can you watch the live from various angles, but you can also use camera work that licks the sky from a distant view and boldly moves to the stage, which is very dynamic. It’s a camera work that you don’t often see at rock concerts, where you tend to focus on your hands, but this may also be an unfamiliar feeling in Eastern Europe. What’s more, if it’s strangely luxurious, for some reason the lighting that illuminates the ceiling of the venue instead of the members, and conversely the simple stage set is something strange. Perhaps it is a production prepared by researching the images of Western European rock, but there is something wrong. This unfamiliarity is not bad, and the mood of “Eastern Europe in the 90’s” that brings out all of them is ridiculously fresh.
And it is not only the screen that exudes Eastern European character. The voice is a super direct sound that is directly connected to the table, but there is almost no loud cheers. There is clearly no consciousness to record the cheers with a microphone and mix them. However, the enthusiasm of DEEP PURPLE approaching with its super direct sound is amazing. 実は、東欧の中でもウクラナはロック後進国。80年代から門戸を開けていたポーランドやハンガリーは元より、ソ連の本丸ロシアよりも遅いほどでした。そんなウクライナにDEEP PURPLEが初上陸したのは1996年なのですが、これは彼の国にとって画期的な出来事。当時はすでにURIAH HEEPや「Wind Of Change」で音楽大使となっていたSCORPIONSが東欧人気を確立していましたが、そんな両バンドよりも早かった。まさに「ハードロック」との初対面だったのです。
またDEEP PURPLE史の観点から見ると、本作はスティーヴ・モーズ加入直後『PURPENDICULAR』時代の代表映像でもある。良い機会でもありますので、ここで当時のスケジュールを振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1996年のDEEP PURPLE。『PURPENDICULAR』リリース前後からヨーロッパ全土を積極的に巡っており、本作のキエフ公演もその一幕。「欧州#2」の10公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、クオリティも完璧で画質・音質もそのままオフィシャル化も可能なクオリティなプロショット。単に様々なアングルでライヴを観られるだけでなく、遠景から大観衆の上空をなめ回し、ステージへと大胆に動くカメラワークも多用されており、非常にダイナミック。手元をじっくりと重視しがちなロック・コンサートではあまり観られないカメラワークですが、これも東欧の不慣れ感なのかも知れません。しかも、妙に豪華ながならなぜかメンバーではなく会場の天井を照らす照明、逆に簡素なステージセットも何かヘン。恐らくは西欧ロックの映像を研究して用意した演出なのでしょうが、どこかズレている。この不慣れ感が悪いわけでもなく、それらすべて醸し出す“90年代の東欧”のムードがやたらと新鮮なのです。
そして、東欧らしさが滲み出すのは、画面だけではない。音声は卓直結な超ダイレクト・サウンドなのですが、大歓声がほぼゼロ。声援をマイク収録してミックスするという意識が明らかにないのです。しかし、その超ダイレクト・サウンドで迫るDEEP PURPLEの熱演が凄い。「欧州#2」の映像と言えば、公式プロショット『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996』が有名ですので、最後に比較しながらセットも整理しておきましょう。
