While welcoming Peter Frampton, “GLASS SPIDER Tour” had a strange glow in Bowie’s career. A superb set that allows you to experience the scene is now available.
This work contains two superb audience records of one show. It is a 3-disc set with new excavation recordings of “June 13, 1987 Hamburg performance” on DISC 1-2 and close shots on DISC 3. Speaking of the symbol of the “NEVER LET ME DOWN” era, it is the official video / live album “GLASS SPIDER”, but this work is not only a separate performance, but the timing is also slightly different. First of all, let’s check the situation around that time in light of the schedule at the time.

● 1987
・March 17-30: Promo Show (9 times)
《“NEVER LET ME DOWN” to be released on April 20》
・ May 29-July 18: Europe (27 performances) ← Coco
・ July 30-October 14: North America (44 performances) ← * Official CD
・ October 29th-November 28th: Oceania (15 performances) ← * Official DVD

This is David Bowie in 1987. Actually, the official work “GLASS SPIDER” is also a separate performance on CD and DVD, the traditional video version was the Sydney performance of the “Oceania” leg, and the CD version officialized in 2007 was the Montreal performance of the “North America” leg. The Hamburg performance of this work is a different “European” leg. It was a concert corresponding to the 8th performance.

– DISC 1-2: “G” recording from newly discovered Omoto cassette
This work is a superb record set that conveys such a show. First of all, the main thing is a two-disc full live album. Although it was a show that has been known for its name recording for a long time, this work is a new recording that is different from that. It has been digitized from the original master by the topical taper “G” who has recorded many Bowie since the 1980s, and the sound is so clear and tight that “super” is attached. Although the timbre has an audience-like quality, the hall sounding component is completely absent, and the outline is sharp, and the details and the separate feeling are enormous. The factor is the venue, in fact, this day is not just a concert, but a festival format where Nina Hagen, ERASURE, Udo Lindenberg, etc. gathered. The venue is an outdoor stage set up in Hamburg City Park, and there are no walls or ceilings that reflect sound, and the sound output of the PA is picked up directly.
Of course, just because it’s outdoors doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy enough to make a great recording, but that’s where the skill of the recording artist comes in. This work has a higher density of the core than the conventional board (commonly known as “Arcorman” recording), and it is clear without distortion to the subtleties of subtleties only in Omoto Master Direct. Combined with the openness of the outdoors, it is a refreshing and fresh clear sound.

– DISC 3: Ultra-realistic video shot from near the front
On behalf of DISC 3, you can experience the full experience from your seat close to the stage. It’s close anyway. Audience shots in the 80’s tend to be distant shots because they try to hide a large camera, but this work is shot from about the 10th row. Moreover, it has a wide field of view. Occasionally there are shadows in the front row, so I can’t advertise that there is no cover! As you know, the “GLASS SPIDER Tour” has an important theatrical element with the cast, so this wide field of view is important.
Also, this video starts at a bright time, and the mood that gradually increases in darkness is also good. In high latitude Europe, the sun is high until quite late, and the sunset time on this day is also 21:50. Even Bowie, who was the main act of the festival format, was bright at the beginning, and it gets darker as the show progresses with one song and one song. And in the second half, the light show and screen images become so vivid that it is hard to believe it is the same show. In terms of image quality, the analog feel of the 80’s is undeniable, but the angle of looking up from a close seat and the boldness of not hiding the camera are like modern times where anyone can shoot with a smartphone.
A full show different from the official “GLASS SPIDER” is depicted in such a superb recording and up-close shots. This work is also a set of live albums and videos, so let’s organize the set while comparing it with both the official CD / DVD.

Never Let Me Down (8 songs)
・Glass Spider/Day-In Day-Out/Bang Bang/Never Let Me Down/’87 And Cry (★)/Time Will Crawl (★)/Beat Of Your Drum (★)/Zeroes (★★)
● Others (15 songs + α)

・Let’s Dance: China Girl/Let’s Dance/Modern Love
・Tonight: Loving The Alien/Dancing With The Big Boys (★★)/Blue Jean
・Other: All The Madmen (★)/Big Brother (★)/Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family (★)/Fame/”Heroes”/Sons Of The Silent Age/Absolute Beginners
* Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard in the official video “GLASS SPIDER (Sydney performance)”. In particular, the “★★” marks are songs that are not even on the CD version of “GLASS SPIDER (Montreal performance)”.

… and it looks like this. All of the “NEVER LET ME DOWN” numbers are limited songs from 1987, but other extremely rare revival songs “All The Madmen”, “Big Brother”, “Sons Of The Silent Age” are also “GLASS SPIDER Tour” It hasn’t been played since. In particular, the two songs “Dancing With The Big Boys” and “Zeroes” are precious songs that cannot be heard even in the official “GLASS SPIDER” despite the limitation of 1987.
The “GLASS SPIDER Tour” is interesting because of its unusual shape. It was a time when people tended to be satisfied with only the official works, but there was also a variety of things that didn’t stop there. What is packed in this work is the site of the “European” leg that cannot be understood in such an official work. A gorgeous set of a new excavation master with a wonderful clearness that wakes your eyes and a valuable video with a wonderful reality of the close-up seats. Please enjoy the three-disc set to your heart’s content.

★ A 3-disc set of the full recording of “June 13, 1987 in Hamburg” and close-up shots of the audience. In particular, the full recording (DISC 1-2) is a new excavation recording by Mr. Taper “G”, which is different from the past, and the sound digitized from the original master is super clear and tight. There is no hall sounding component, and the outline is clear, and the details and the separate feeling are great. You can experience a delicious European leg full show, such as the extremely rare “Zeroes” and “Dancing With The Big Boys,” which you can’t hear in the official “GLASS SPIDER” repertoire.

『NEVER LET ME DOWN』時代の象徴と言えば、公式映像/ライヴアルバム『GLASS SPIDER』ですが、本作は別公演というだけでなく、時期も少々異なっています。

《4月20日『NEVER LET ME DOWN』発売》

Glass Spider/Day-In Day-Out/Bang Bang/Never Let Me Down/’87 And Cry(★)/Time Will Crawl(★)/Beat Of Your Drum(★)/Zeroes(★★)
Up The Hill Backwards/Fashion/Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)(★)
China Girl/Let’s Dance/Modern Love
Loving The Alien/Dancing With The Big Boys(★★)/Blue Jean
All The Madmen(★)/Big Brother(★)/Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family(★)/Fame/”Heroes”/Sons Of The Silent Age/Absolute Beginners
特に「★★」印はCD版『GLASS SPIDER(モントリオール公演)』にもない曲。

『NEVER LET ME DOWN』ナンバーはいずれも1987年の限定曲なわけですが、他にも激レアな復活曲「All The Madmen」「Big Brother」「Sons Of The Silent Age」も“GLASS SPIDER Tour”以降には演奏されていません。
