Exactly 10 years ago, Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck’s joint tour was held exclusively in the United States. At the time, it looked like a mixed martial arts match between big names from the US and UK, and while it generated a lot of attention, no items that were truly unique were released, making it difficult to grasp the true nature of this unique tour. However, now that Beck has gone into exile, it was an extremely valuable opportunity to perform together live. What’s more, the CD-R items released in real time are now almost forgotten. Rather, I cannot deny the impression that it is a tour that has been overlooked even among enthusiasts.
In addition, it is also true that the best sound source worthy of the press CD did not appear. However, this time, the Greek Theater on October 20, 2013 provided by an overseas collector was an amazing high quality audience. Anyway, the sound image is close and the clearness is perfect. This is a masterpiece recording that can be described as “just like a soundboard.” I can’t believe he was able to capture the Brian set and Beck set, each of which has a completely different sound output from the band, in such perfect condition.
I see, because the audience recordings that were so excellent in real life were not distributed, the valuable joint tour at that time was probably spoiled with just a CD-R release. Big band Brian and solid Beck’s stages are captured with perfect sound quality. Audience recordings that boast such outstanding quality will be punished if they are not released on a limited press CD.
The overwhelming sound quality alone makes this a superb audience album that can be enthusiastically recommended by a wide range of generations from fans to enthusiasts, but the content is also amazing. Brian’s set is the ultimate condensed set that includes the legendary treasure “PET SOUNDS” complete set, sprinkled with Beach Boys classics, and the performance of Brian Band, who was a rock at the time, is impeccable. In addition to Al Jardine, the Beach Boys from the previous year also included David Marks, a remnant from the previous year’s full lineup, and even on the album “PET SOUNDS”, in which he had no involvement, he played the guitar solo on the title song. There are demonstrations such as playing.
On the other hand, Beck’s work foreshadowed what would become “LOUD HAILER” in that it was the first time two female members joined the band, violinist Lizzy Ball and bassist Rhonda Smith. In addition to this fresh arrangement, there is also a wonderful instrumental arrangement of the Jimi Hendrix cover “Little Wing” that was often played at the time, as well as Lizzy’s active violin playing from “Yemin” onwards, which is now 2013. It’s full of sounds and plays that could only be experienced in the Beck band, and you can feel Beck playing comfortably with the girls in the background.
Then, on the joint stage of the two groups, Beck played the melody of “Surf’s Up”, and members of Brian’s band added chorus harmony during “Brush With the Blues”, and other rare scenes unique to such joints were recorded. One after another. Of course, in “Barbara Ann” Beck plays a guitar solo, and now that he has passed away, I am reminded that there was plenty of performance unique to the joint that was not limited to just a mixed martial arts battle. Above all, the sound quality is very good, so this is the best audience album full of the forgotten charm of the fantastic joint tour. I was surprised at how good this sound was!

There is an audience shot video of the entire performance on YouTube on October 20th, which was the stage for the ultimate audience album “GREEK THEATER 2013 DEFINITIVE MASTER.”
As expected, it would be extremely difficult to capture the entire show, which lasted for over two hours, on a smartphone video (even more so considering the year 2013), so here we have assembled a complete set of videos that were circulating at the time by enthusiasts. thing.
For this reason, the songs in Brian’s set are connected with images of tickets from the day of the event, and the entire song “Don’t Talk” is filled with images of tickets and venues, which shows the painstaking editing involved. This is an extremely valuable video that visually conveys what happened that day.
The video angles are excellent throughout, and the facial expressions of Brian and Beck are clearly captured, making it extremely easy to watch.
First of all, as for Brian, I was surprised to see him smiling and singing from start to finish on the set of “PET SOUNDS”, which was captured in an amazing close-up. Speaking of Brian, I have a strong impression of his overwhelmingly expressionless staging, so I’m starting to enjoy it when I look at him here.
On the other hand, Beck’s set is a bit of a slow angle, but unlike Brian, it’s an instrumental band, so this angle is actually more interesting because you can see how skilled each player is.
Furthermore, after “The Pump” ended, the microphone that Beck tried to address to the audience was not working, and it was funny to see him pretending to be troubled.
However, the presence of violinist Lizzy Ball is overwhelming throughout, and it is truly regrettable that she was not able to participate in the performance in Japan the following year.
And when it comes to Brian and Beck’s joint set, the angle closes up all at once. For example, the scene where Beck plays the melody of “Surf’s Up” in the second half of “Child Is Father of the Man” is so close that it seems like a professional shot.
In the next song, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” you can see that Al Jardine and others are watching Beck’s play on stage without participating in the performance, which is unique to the video.
However, Lizzy Ball is also very active here, and I was surprised to see her not only playing, but also participating in the harmonies of the Beach Boys number.
If you look at it this way, you can clearly see that although it is a joint set, the overall composition was performed with Beck on Brian’s side. Don’t miss the first delivery as it is a video material full of highlights that will complement this perfect audience album.
例えばベックが「Child Is Father of the Man」の後半で「Surf’s Up」のメロディを弾く場面などはプロショットかと錯覚しそうな近さ。
