Brand X / The Roxy 1979 1st Night (Late Show): Mike Millard Master Tapes / 1CDR / amity
The Roxy, West Hollywood, CA, USA 21st September 1979 (Late Show)
The legendary club “THE ROXY” where absolute masters were observing the GENESIS family. BRAND X’s super-superb live album appears in the collection.
“September 21, 1979 West Hollywood Performance (Late Show)” is imbued in this work. It is the transcendental audience recording. Speaking of 1979, GENESIS was the time when three people started solo activities. Tony Banks released his first solo “A CURIOUS FEELING”, and Mike Rutherford also produced “SMALLCREEP’S DAY”. Phil Collins also joined the side project BRAND X. First of all, let’s look back on the schedule at that time.
《April: PRODUCT session》
・ September 12-16: UK (3 performances)
《“PRODUCT” released on September 14th》
・September 20-30: North America (11 performances) ← Coco
・October 9: Appearance at OGWT
・October 28: Uniondale Performance
《November-December “DUKE” production》
This is Phil Collins in 1979. Live activities were compactly organized like a side project, but among them, “THE ROXY” performances were held for 6 consecutive performances at the beginning of “North America”. The pattern became the official live album “LIVE AT THE ROXY L.A.”, and it was also very popular as Millard’s masterpiece “THE ROXY 1979 (Amity 665)”. This work is the upgrade board. . . . Not a completely different concert. Let’s sort out the situation.
●THE ROXY6 performance details
・September 21: Early ← *Amity 665
・September 21: Late ← This work
・September 22: Early
・September 22: Late
・September 23: Early
・September 23: Late←*Official
The above is 3 consecutive days x 2 times each = 6 performances in total. This work is the second performance on the same day as “THE ROXY 1979 (Amity 665)”. And this work, which vacuum-packed such a scene, is a superb sound that exceeds even the previous work. No, the previous work was also a top-class mirrored collection, and it was a direct sound that surpassed the official work “LIVE AT THE ROXY LA”, but this work is even closer. I was surprised to think, “Is it possible to have a sound that is better than that!?” The reason for this seems to be the unique system of “THE ROXY”. At Densetsu Club, if you buy tickets for both shows on the same day, they will give you priority seats at the late show. Therefore, the late show is closer to the stage and tends to be a closer sound. In this work, the situation is beautifully appearing in the sound.
A full show different from the previous work “Amity 665” is drawn with such an ultra-direct sound that surpasses the official. Let’s organize them by comparing them here.

* Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard at the early show “THE ROXY 1979 (Amity 665)”. The “*” marks are studio recordings in which Phil did not participate.
… and it looks like this. The previous work “Amity 665” was the same as the official work “LIVE AT THE ROXY LA”, but this work replaced the encore for the late show. “Access To Data” is selected instead of “Nuclear Burn”. Of course, it is a repertoire that can not be heard even in the official “LIVE AT THE ROXY LA”. And that “Access To Data” and “Dance Of The Illegal Aliens” are songs that Phil Collins did not hit the drum in the studio work. You can enjoy the precious Phil version with super-superb sound.
“Finally, a digression.” BRAND X is not the only recording of “THE ROXY” by Millard. Many old and new GENESIS relationships were recorded at the same venue. It is a pleasure unique to audience recording that you can observe the family band at the same venue and at the same sound recording artist. Enjoy the collection below.
