The “Christic Institute Benefit” at the Shrine Auditorium in LA in 1990 focused on the topic and release of Bruce Springsteen’s solo performance of the stage after a long absence (now his stage). Has been officially released), but Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt were on stage before him.

このような特別かつ注目を浴びたベネフィット・ギグでしたので、二日間に渡って行われたステージの模様を捉えたテーパーが多くの音源を残してくれていたのですが、その中でもベストに君臨していたのは当然マイク・ミラード。
先に触れたように話題を呼んだスプリングスティーンのステージを捉えた彼の音源はリアタイでトレーダー間にも出回っていたのですが、他の二人の音源に関しては意外にも広まらず。
それだけにイベント初日からジャクソン・ブラウンのステージを捉えた「THE CHRISTIC INSTITUTE BENEFIT CONCERT 1990: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES」のリリースは文字通りマニア狂喜となったのでした。

となれば待たれるのはボニー・レイットのステージを捉えたミラード音源。嬉しいことにJEMSがブラウンの音源からさほど間を開けずして公開してくれたのです。
しかも今回は二日目のステージ。つまり、これからブラウンの二日目とレイット初日のステージを捉えたミラード・マスターの公開も控えていることになるから楽しみ。
そんな世界中のマニアが待ち望んだレイットのステージを捉えたミラード録音は…これがもう素晴らしい音質。
「サウンドボードのような」という域にまでは及ばないまでも、それでも彼女の歌声を中心とした音像はかなり近い。おまけに本イベントは三人がアコースティック・スタイルのステージを披露するというスタイルも大きな話題を呼んだもの。

レイットに関しては40歳にして出世作となった名盤「NICK OF TIME」をリリースした後というタイミングですので、当時活動休止中のスプリングスティーン、あるいは直近のアルバムが不発に終わったジャクソンと比べて正に絶頂期という時期でのステージ。
ここで彼女はエレキでの弾き語りにバンドメンバーのベーシストに合わせてもらうという最低限の構成。それでいてライブ終盤はそんな大ヒットの記憶も新しい「NICK OF TIME」からの曲を畳みかけてみせたところがこの時期ならでは。
音数が少ない構成ゆえ彼女のハスキーさが魅力な歌声に加え、聞いていて思わず舌を巻くようなブルーズ・ギターがじっくりと味わえる。これがミラード録音ときたものだから、いよいよ素晴らしい。
ステージ・レパートリーでおなじみ「El Salvador」ではブラウンも登場してレイットとボーカルを分け合うという、アコースティック・イベントならではの親密な場面も。
そして「Write Me A Few Of Your Lines」からはドラマーも加わったアコースティック・バンド状態（スティックでなくブラシを叩いてます）が最高。この貴重なステージのミラード・マスターが遂に発掘されました。これは演奏も音質も一級品。
