This year’s Dylan has completely occupied the cover song performance that started with the dead cover “Truckin'” on the second day in Tokyo, and the selection of songs has continued to escalate. 今年のディランは東京二日目のデッド・カバー「Truckin’」から始まったカバー曲披露にすっかり味を占めてしまい、その選曲はエスカレートの一途を辿っています。ヨーロッパではヴァン・モリソンの「Into The Mystic」が世界中のマニアをアッと言わせ、それを速攻リリースした『ALICANTE 2023』も記憶に新しいところ。
ヨーロッパツアー後しばらくはツアーの日程が発表されなかったことから、一時は「遂にディランも引退か？」と不安が囁かれたりもしましたが、10月1日から何事もなかったかのように今年初のアメリカツアーがスタート。
そのカバー曲モードはツアー初日のカンザス・シティから炸裂、当然「Kansas City」でライブが幕を開けたのです。その後セント・ルイスではチャック・ベリーの地元ということで「Johnny B. Goode」からスタートという分かりやすさ。

もはや秋のアメリカツアーでディランが「ご当地カバーソング」というモードに突入したことは間違いなく、そうなれば三日連続で行われるシカゴでは…と思ったら初日の幕を開けたのは案の定「Born In Chicago」というド直球オープニング。
あのニューポート・フォーク・フェスティバルにおけるエレキ・デビューのバックを務めてくれたバタフィールド・ブルース・バンドの曲、つまりディランにとって同世代グループの曲ということもあり、彼はすんなりと歌い上げているのがお見事。
またバンドとしてもシンプルなリフ中心の演奏しやすい曲ということもあり、これまたライブ初演とは思えないほど力強い演奏で驚きのオープニングとなったのでした。

それだけではありません、ライブを締めくくったのはシカゴと言えば…のマディ・ウォーターズ「Forty Days and Forty Nights」のカバー。シカゴと言えばブルース、ということで正にご当地感にあふれたフィナーレがまた何とも分かりやすい。
こちらはオープニング以上に素直な演奏で、そこはディランのマディ愛が感じられるほどの出来栄え。その歌だけでなく、ピアノの鍵盤も連打して演奏を楽しんでいる様子がはっきり伝わってくる。
そんな驚きのシカゴ・ナイトを記録した最新オーディエンス録音は実にクリアーで素晴らしい音質。なおかつ音像も近くて初心者からマニアまで余裕で楽しめるレベル。
