Finally, the day has finally come when this name recording can be permanently preserved. A historic live album that recorded the extremely rare songs “Wheels Of Confusion” and “Under The Sun” has been brushed up. The highest peak board to commemorate the 50th anniversary is now available on the press CD!
“July 15, 1972 Dayton performance” is imbued with the historical recording. It is a masterpiece audience recording captured in the first act of “VOLUME 4 Tour”. Speaking of the symbol of this tour, the official sound board familiar from “LIVE AT LAST” and the super-famous board “DEFINITIVE BRESCIA 1973 (Zodiac 398)” of the audience are the symbols. The biggest point is this “early tour”. I’ve been experimenting with new songs from “VOL.4”, and I’m also playing the extremely rare songs “Wheels Of Confusion” and “Under The Sun,” which quickly drop out of the set. There are various rare songs in 70’s Sabas, but the rarity of these two songs is de-class. Both were confirmed only twice in the 1970s. In particular, “Wheels Of Confusion” is only three times in the entire history of Sabas, including the reunion era. Here, let’s check all three times.

… And it looks like this. Of course, the drums of “BLACK EASTER” in 2012 are not Bill Ward, and the keys are dropped boldly, which makes it feel strange at the level of another song. The potential of “VOL.4” is only twice in 1972. And this work is the best even in those two times. You can listen to another LA recording at our “WHEELS OF CONFUSION (Shades 076)”, but the sound quality drops a few ranks and the recording stops in the middle. Dayton recording is exactly the record of the pinnacle.
[Detailed mastering of GRAF ZEPPELIN suitable for the 50th anniversary] And this work is one that updated the highest peak of such apex recording. It is one of the best existing “1st Gene Master” products that has been refined by the detailed mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. The sound is vivid and awake. The “GRAF ZEPPELIN” method does not earn unsophisticated sound pressure, but faithfully performs the basics such as pitch / phase correction, band analysis, noise reduction, etc., but with demon accuracy. Especially effective this time was the removal of hum and noise. Omoto’s 1st Gene Master was familiar with the gift board, but when I listened carefully with headphones, it was covered with a low-pitched noise. It has completely disappeared. With the addition of balance correction by band analysis, the extension of treble is also clear. It’s revived with a brighter, more vibrant sound.If it was a little more maniac point, it would be complementary. As is often the case with 70’s audiences, this recording was also recorded on-site with a monaural microphone and dubbed to a stereo cassette. Probably because of that, the phase of the left and right channels was out of phase in the middle of the tape, and the stereotactic surgery was heard swaying from side to side. Therefore, in this work, we pursued and corrected it in units of 1/1000 second, and then made it completely monaural. As originally recorded, the sound is perfectly aligned in the center of the center.
The live performances of “Wheels Of Confusion” and “Under The Sun” revived in this way … Before the excavation of the top audience “DEFINITIVE BRESCIA 1973”, this recording was said to be “No. 1 on the VOL.4 tour”. It is the highest record in history, with the highest peak of such traditional recording, the 1st Gene Master, raised sharply by detailed mastering. 【激レア曲を捉えた歴史的なベスト録音】
これが“VOLUME 4 Tour”の概要。公式サウンドボードも『DEFINITIVE BRESCIA 1973』もアルバム発売後の1973年だったのに対し、本作はグッと初期。『VOL.4』が完成していても発売されていない「北米」レッグの５公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
この「ツアー初期」というのが最大のポイント。『VOL.4』からの新曲をいろいろ試しており、すぐにセット落ちしてしまう激レア曲「Wheels Of Confusion」「Under The Sun」も演奏しているのです。70年代サバスにはいろいろなレア曲がありますが、この２曲のレア度はド級。どちらも70年代に２回分しか確認されていないのです。特に「Wheels Of Confusion」は再結成時代を含めたサバス全史でも３回だけ。ここで、その全３回もチェックしておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。もちろん、2012年の『BLACK EASTER』のドラムはビル・ワードではありませんし、キーも豪快に落として別曲レベルの違和感。『VOL.4』ポテンシャルは1972年の２回分しかないのです。そして、その２回でもベストなのが本作。もう１回のＬＡ録音は当店の『WHEELS OF CONFUSION（Shades 076）』で聴けますが、音質が数ランク落ちますし、途中で録音も止まってしまう。デイトン録音こそ、まさに頂点の記録なのです。
【50周年に相応しいGRAF ZEPPELINの細密マスタリング】
そして、本作はそんな頂点録音の最高峰を更新した１枚。現存するベストの「1stジェネ・マスター」を「GRAF ZEPPELIN」の細密マスタリングで磨き直した銘品中の銘品なのです。そのサウンドは、目も醒める鮮やかさ。「GRAF ZEPPELIN」の手法は無粋な音圧稼ぎなどはせず、ピッチ／位相の補整、帯域分析、ノイズ除去……といった基本を忠実に、しかし鬼の精度で行うもの。今回特に効果的だったのはハム・ノイズの除去。大元の1stジェネ・マスターはギフト盤でもお馴染みでしたが、ヘッドフォンでよーく耳を澄ますと「ブーッ」という低音ノイズ抗敷かれていました。それがすっかり綺麗に消えているのです。そこに帯域分析によるバランス補整が加わった事で高音の伸びもクッキリ。より明るく、鮮やかなサウンドに甦っているのです。
さらに少々マニアックなポイントだと位相補整。70年代オーディエンスにはよくある事なのですが、この録音も現場ではモノラル・マイクで収録され、ステレオ・カセットにダビングされていました。そのせいか、テープの途中で左右チャンネルの位相がズレ、定位が左右にふらついて聞こえたのです。そこで本作では1/1000秒単位まで追及して補整し、その上で完全モノラル化。本来の録音通り、中央ド真ん中にビシッと揃ったサウンドを実現しているのです。
こうして甦った「Wheels Of Confusion」「Under The Sun」の生演奏……もう、感無量です。そもそも頂点オーディエンスの『DEFINITIVE BRESCIA 1973』が発掘される以前は、この録音こそが「VOL.4ツアーのNo.1」と言われてきました。そんな伝統録音の最高峰1stジェネ・マスターを、細密マスタリングでグイッと引き上げた史上最高盤なのです。まさに50周年に相応しい超・決定盤。どうぞ、永久保存プレスCDでいつでも、いつまでもお楽しみください！
