The official video work “LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND”, which was produced in the midst of the heyday of a series of big hits. Introducing the definitive board that couples the two special Japanese versions.
“LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND” is a truly illusory masterpiece. It was a multi-camera pro shot taken at the “December 29, 1982 Uniondale Performance”, which was the first act of “THE NYLON CURTAIN Tour”, and was also Billy’s first video work. It was out of print in a blink of an eye due to the fate of the video popularization period, but until now it has not been made into an official DVD for some reason, and South American DVDs and CDs with video drops have been distributed pretending to be official. .. This work is a two-disc set that compiles such a classic and discontinued video with two highest peak versions. Let’s introduce each disc.
And the content is also Tokuno. The broadcast frame of about 52 minutes is shorter than the official product version described later, and of course there are significantly fewer songs. Doesn’t it make sense? It is sprinkled with charm that cannot be experienced in the product version.
● Unique charm 1 “Until The Night”
The official product version has 16 songs in total, while the broadcast version has only 7 songs. It’s not a match at all, but only one of them, “Until The Night,” is not included in the product version.
● Unique charm 2 “Interview”
Furthermore, what is not seen in the product version is the biography corner that introduces the interviews inserted between the songs and Billy’s career. Bio is chronological, but interviews are valuable. Especially, the scene of showing a finger stuck due to the aftereffect of a motorcycle accident is vivid.
● Unique charm 3 “Lyrics subtitles”
And the most important point is Japanese subtitles. Of course, the interview is complete, but the lyrics also have bilingual subtitles. Moreover, all 7 songs. It’s a technique that isn’t often seen in modern times, where the nuances of the original lyrics are emphasized, but the real thrill of being able to convey the meaning of the lyrics to Vivid is exceptional.
● Unique charm 4 “Nostalgic CM”
Although I was full with just such a live performance, what was even more shocking was the commercial that was played in between. This special program was provided independently by a certain electric manufacturer, but the commercial is intense. When you enter the CM part, you suddenly see a big black screen with white characters
“Do you know compact discs?”
It was a time when even the abbreviation of “CD” was not established. Then, the logo mark is projected on the entire screen, and he reluctantly says, “Maybe it’s a sound you’ve never heard. That’s a compact disc.” In addition, Billy’s song will be played along with the telop “Listen to the invention.” The mood seems to have been discovered in the monolith of “2001: A Space Odyssey” …
Moreover, it is not just a CD. In the latter half of the program, he touted beta hi-fi with the message “Are you watching the video with the sound in mind?”, “1983, the year when the sound of the video got the quality suitable for the digital audio era. Must be remembered as “. Of course, that’s the memory, but at the end of the program, a serious announcement will be made where the gap in that era cannot be filled.
“We will announce. The birth of the first public Walkman.”
It is not the first Walkman, but it declares that it is the same size as the cassette case. And Todome is each price. The Walkman is “27,000 yen”, but the CD deck is “145,000 yen” and the beta deck is “299,000 yen”. The seriousness of the manufacturer toward the arrival of the digital era, and the difference between the heavy production and the shabby content. We have introduced commercials for various music programs, but we have never seen such a strong commercial video.
The source is the Japanese version of the laser disc released at that time. It has been precisely digitized from the mint quality board. The quality is just the best. The resolution itself is different from VHS, and the storage capacity is not comparable to analog tape. Moreover, playback unevenness that cannot be avoided with tape does not physically occur, and there is no noise deterioration. CDs and beta hi-fi were touted on Japanese broadcasts, but LD was a much more amazing technology … it shows that fact with visual beauty.
And the biggest attraction here is the volume of songs of about 80 minutes, which far exceeds the broadcast version. Finally, let’s organize the contents.

大ヒットを連発し、全盛真っ直中に制作された廃盤オフィシャル映像作『LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND』。その日本特別バージョン２種をカップリングした決定盤が登場です。
『LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND』は、まさに幻の名作。“THE NYLON CURTAIN Tour”の一幕であった「1982年12月29日ユニオンデール公演」で撮影されたマルチカメラ・プロショットで、ビリー初の映像作品でもありました。ビデオ普及期の宿命であっと言う間に廃盤になってしまったわけですが、現在に至るまでなぜか公式DVD化されず、ビデオ落としの南米DVDやCDがオフィシャルのふりをして流通してきました。本作は、そんな定番にして廃盤映像を２つの最高峰バージョンでコンパイルした２枚組なのです。それでは、それぞれディスク毎にご紹介していきましょう。
【DISC 1：歌詞字幕も素晴らしい日本放送バージョン】
まず登場するのは、公式ビデオがリリースされる前に公開された放送版。それも日本の某民放局で流された日本特番『摩天楼の熱い風…ビリージョエル・ニューヨークライブ』バージョンです。当店ではコアな記録マニアの極上マスターをご紹介しており、本作もそのひとつ。後述するレーザーディスク版にも負けていない超極上クオリティで貴重な放送版を楽しめるのです。
そして、その内容も特濃。約52分という放送枠は後述するオフィシャル製品版よりも短く、もちろん収録曲も大幅に少ない。では意味ないのか……と言うと、さにあらず。製品版では味わえない魅力が（たっぷりと）まぶされているのです。
●独自の魅力その１「Until The Night」
オフィシャル製品版が全16曲なのに対し、放送版はわずか７曲。まったく勝負にならないのですが、その中の１曲「Until The Night」だけは製品版未収録なのです。
●独自の魅力その２「インタビュー」
さらに製品版で見られないのが曲間に挿入されたインタビューやビリーの経歴を紹介するバイオグラフィ・コーナー。バイオは年表的なものですが、インタビューは貴重。特にバイク事故の後遺症で動かなくなった指を見せるシーンは生々しいです。
●独自の魅力その３「歌詞字幕」
そして、一番のポイントが日本語字幕。インタビューに完備しているのは勿論ですが、さらに歌詞にも対訳字幕が付いている。しかも、７曲全部。元歌詞のニュアンスを重視する現代ではあまり見られない手法ですが、やはり歌詞の意味がビビッドに伝わってくる醍醐味は格別です。
●独自の魅力その４「懐かCM」
そんなライヴ本編だけでお腹いっぱいですが、それ以上に衝撃的なのが合間に流されるCMです。この特番は某電機メーカーの単独提供だったのですが、そのCMが強烈。CMパートに入るといきなり黒い画面に白文字でデカデカと
「コンパクトディスクを知っていますか。」
そう「CD」の略称すら定着していない時期だったのです。そして、あのロゴマークを画面いっぱいに映して「もしかしたら、あなたが一度も聴いたことのない音。それがコンパクトディスクです」と渋く語りだす。さらに「発明を、聴く。」のテロップと共にビリーの曲を流し、（今となっては一般常識ですらある）光ディスクの原理を厳かに紹介していく。そのムードは、まるで『2001年宇宙の旅』のモノリスでも発見したかのよう……。
しかも、CDだけではない。番組後半では「音を意識してビデオを見ていますか。」のメッセージと共にベータhi-fiを喧伝し、「1983年、それはビデオの音がデジタル・オーディオ時代に相応しいクオリティを手に入れた年として記憶されなければならない」と言い渡される。当然、そんな記憶はわけですが、そんな時代ギャップを埋め切れずにいるところで番組最後には重大発表が行われる。
「発表いたします。初公開ウォークマンの誕生。」
さすがにウォークマン第一号ではありませんが、カセット・ケースと同じサイズであることを高らかに宣言するのです。そして、トドメがそれぞれの価格。ウォークマンが「2万7000円」なのはまぁ良いとして、ただのCDデッキが「14万5000円」で、ベータ・デッキが「29万9000円」ときたもんだ。デジタル時代到来に向けたメーカーの本気度、そして重々しい演出とショボい内容の落差。これまでも様々な音楽番組のCMをご紹介してきましたが、ここまで強烈なコマーシャル映像は前代未聞です。
【DISC 2：最高峰クオリティの日本盤LDバージョン】
すっかり長くなりましたが、音楽的に意味があるのはDISC 2の方。オフィシャル作品『LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND』の史上最高峰クオリティ復刻盤です。
そのソースとなっているのは、当時リリースされた日本盤レーザーディスク。そのミント・クオリティ盤から精緻にデジタル化されているのです。そのクオリティはまさにベスト。VHSとは解像度自体が違いますし、保存能力もアナログ・テープとは比較にならない。しかも、テープでは避けられない再生ムラも物理的に発生しませんし、ノイズ劣化も皆無。日本放送ではCDやベータhi-fiを喧伝していましたが、LDの方がよっぽど凄い技術だった……その事実を映像美で見せつけてくれるのです。
そして、こちらの最大の魅力は放送版を遙かに超える約80分の曲数ボリューム。最後に、その内容も整理しておきましょう。
