Billy Joel has resumed live activities from this month in response to the situation in the United States where vaccination has progressed and events under the corona have begun. The latest performance released this time by the UXBRIDGE label, taking advantage of the mobility unique to CD-R, is Highmark Stadium on August 14th.
Actually, this venue, formerly a large venue with a long history where famous groups and artists such as Led Zeppelin appeared as a rich stadium. Since 1999, the venue name has changed every time the crown company changed, but now it is Highmark Stadium. Only in the United States, where vaccination has progressed, it has become possible to perform live at such a large venue.
The latest live performance was delivered with the finest audience recording. The balance is very solid sound quality and the sound image is quite on. In addition, the venue is fully lively because the vaccinated person is a condition, and it is no longer different from a normal live concert. Even so, it captures the performance and Billy’s singing voice far more than the excitement of the surroundings, so it does not interfere with listening at all. To be honest, a press CD wouldn’t be strange if it was of this quality.

Because of the resumption of live activities that had to be interrupted due to the corona disaster, the composition of the live is a continuation of his live set list for the past few years. Therefore, the songs of the 70’s are concentrated in the first half of the live, and the songs of the 80’s and later are played in the second half.
The gorgeous set list with Billy’s masterpieces lined up like this is attractive. The pattern of Billy singing “Nobody should sleep” from “Turandot” in front of “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” is familiar in recent years.
However, on this day, the nostalgic Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik appeared as a guest and played the representative song “Iris” with Billy and others in the background. While playing on Billy’s stage, the reaction of the audience is very good, and the excitement is so high that even the chorus is bubbling up (it seems to be the case in America nowadays).
The joy of seeing and listening to the live again is overflowing both on the stage and in the audience seats, and it is a big attraction of this sound source that it captures such a sense of presence in a sarcastic balance. And above all, Billy’s joy of returning to the stage should be clearly conveyed by his generous performance throughout the live performance.
In the first half of the live where the 70’s numbers before the break were concentrated as before, he explained many times that “It’s a song that didn’t hit” and made the audience laugh. In memory, “The River Of Dreams” includes their “Tush”, which is a stylish production. The latest sound source that captures Billy’s present with the best sound quality, which will gradually continue live activities from now on. Please enjoy it carefully because it is such a time.

ワクチン接種が進んでコロナ下でのイベントが行われ始めたアメリカの情勢を受け、ビリー・ジョエルも今月からライブ活動を再開させています。UXBRIDGEレーベルがCD-Rならではの機動力を生かして今回リリースする最新公演は8月14日のハイマーク・スタジアム。
実はこの会場、以前はリッチ・スタジアムとしてレッド・ツェッペリンを始めとした名だたるグループやアーティストが出演した由緒ある大会場。1999年以降は冠企業が変わる度に会場名も変わっているのですが、現在はハイマーク・スタジアムとのこと。そのような大会場でのライブが何とか可能となったのも、ワクチン接種の進んだアメリカならでは。
そんな最新ライブが極上のオーディエンス録音にて届けられました。非常にソリッドな音質で音像も相当にオンなバランス。またワクチン接種者が条件という事で会場は十分に盛り上がっており、もはや通常のライブと何ら変わりはありません。それでも周囲の盛り上がりよりはるかに演奏やビリーの歌声を捉えてくれているので、聞きこむ際の支障となることもまったくない。正直、これほどのクオリティであればプレスCDでもおかしくないほど。

コロナ禍で中断を余儀なくされていたライブ活動の再開ということから、ライブの構成的にはここ数年の彼のライブのセットリストを継続させたもの。よってライブ前半に70年代の曲が集中し、後半は80年代以降の曲が演奏されるという構成です。
このようにビリーの名曲がずらりと並んだ豪華なセットリストが魅力的。「Scenes From An Italian Restaurant」の前で「トゥーランドット」から「誰も寝てはならぬ」をビリーが熱唱するパターンなどは近年おなじみのものでしょう。
しかしこの日は懐かしのグー・グー・ドールズのフロントマン、ジョン・レズニックがゲストに登場してビリーたちをバックに代表曲「Iris」を演奏。ビリーのステージでの演奏ながらオーディエンスのリアクションは非常に良く、合唱まで沸き起こる（こういうことができるのも今のアメリカらしいですね）ほどの盛り上がりを見せています。
再びライブが見れる、聞けるという喜びはステージ上と客席の両方に溢れていて、そんな臨場感を嫌味のないバランスで捉えてくれているのも今回の音源の大きな魅力。そして何より再びステージに戻れたビリーの喜びはライブ全体を通しての余裕あるパフォーマンスぶりからはっきり伝わってくるのがいい。
先のようにブレイク前の70年代ナンバーが集中するライブ前半では何度も「ヒットしなかった曲だけどね」と説明して観客を笑わせ、また7月末に亡くなったZZトップの出すティ・ヒルを偲び「The River Of Dreams」では彼らの「Tush」がインクルードされるというのも粋な演出。これからも徐々にライブ活動を継続させるであろうビリーの今を極上音質で捉えてくれた最新音源。こんな時期だからこそじっくりとお楽しみください。
