This time, Joe Pope’s secret BBC sound source of the early Beatles will be released, but rather it is a number of sound sources such as Decca audition that made his name eternal in the Beatlemania world. So here is a summary of all the sound sources that he saw in the light of day in the best version. Regarding this sound source, I felt that the release title on the net called “NEVER MIND THE TREMELOES”, which was dropped directly from Joe Pope’s reel to DAT ten years ago, was the best, but it is still Reflecting the historical background of the time, some equalization was applied, and the tape hiss between songs was made inconspicuous. This was a problem that arose from the original tape, and since this sound source was half officially released in the 1980s, it was also hidden by skillful copy and paste editing, and this time it makes full use of the latest technology. Then, the twist of the tape itself was repaired without patching with a fake from another place.
The following is a compilation of only the main upper version part from this “BBC BROADCASTS 1962-1964: JOE POPE REELS”. I would like to recommend this to those who only need to hear the highlights of the sound quality improvement part that first appeared this time, and the early Beatles feeling of the flow from Decca to the BBC’s first appearance is not easy for beginners. Is it? Regarding the sound quality, we adopted the remastered version, which is the main part of it, and it is also attractive that it is easy to hear in combination with the edited content.

The second one was a sudden era, and in 1968, during the recording of Mary Hopkin’s album “POST CARD” produced by Paul between the White album and the Get Back session, she and Paul, and then Donovan. Captures the scene of a meeting while singing lightly. Although it was recorded at a regular recording studio called Trident Studio, it is a stage before the book Chan recording for the album, so it is a monaural private recording recorded by someone who was there.
The next recording is a rough mix sound source of “ABBEY ROAD” which became the Beatles’ last album in effect the following year. Until the early 1980s, the outflow of Beatles studio sound sources was extremely rare, and the sound sources at the stage of being carved in acetate, such as “What’s The New Mary Jane,” barely leaked. According to the info of “POPE GO ~”, it seems that this sound source and the previous Donovan sound source were the reels that Pope came with as a bonus when he got the Decca sound source.
And at the end, I want to record a single that couples the unreleased song “How Do You Do It” and “Revolution” PV version, which is Pope’s maiden work … but I can not procure the original single because it is rare. , Remastered from the American LP “DECCAGONE SESSIONS” which is a copy (and even his Deckagone single) and recorded as a bonus. However, it is recorded in a clean state that I can not think that this was recorded from the copy board LP.

Roger Scott and John Barrett, who have released the culmination so far, were so-called “industry side” people, but Pope is a person who was highly enthusiastic and showed up. Therefore, the ratio other than EMI sound source is large. ★ About Decca Audition Tape
Decca probably doesn’t have the original master tape anymore (because there is no rule to keep audition tapes in the studio), but fortunately Mike Savage, a recording engineer at the time of the audition, said the same day. I was making a copy with the audition recording of The Tremeloes (they passed).
Then, from the end of 1976 to the beginning of 1977, an unknown British journalist contacted Decca for permission to publish the audition at that time. Decca allowed him to lend a tape. It is said that the journalist secretly made a copy at this time before returning the tape. Joe Pope paid $ 5,000 in 1977 to get the audition reel tape, but it is highly likely that this is the source in terms of timing.
Another known copy of the Master is two 10-inch reels owned by Brian Epstein for sale to record labels, apparently sold to individual collectors after his death. It is said that the masterpiece “THE DECCA TAPES (Circuit Records)” may be sourced from this Epstein tape.

今回、ジョー・ポープが秘匿していたビートルズ初期のBBC音源がリリースされる訳ですが、むしろ彼の名をビートルマニア界で永遠のものとしたのはデッカ・オーディションを始めとした音源の数々。そこで彼によって日の目を見た音源のすべてをベストバージョンにてまとめてみせたのがこちら。世界中のマニアを驚かせるであろう初期BBC音源のアッパー版「BBC BROADCASTS 1962-1964: JOE POPE REELS」と比べ、より初心者でも解りやすい内容のビートルズレア音源集としても非常に楽しめる一枚となっています。
となれば本リリースの冒頭を飾るのは当然デッカ・オーディション・テープ。本音源に関しては今から十年前に、ジョー・ポープのリールからDATへ直に落とされた「NEVER MIND THE TREMELOES」というネット上でのリリースタイトルがベストとなっていた感がありましたが、まだ当時の時代背景を反映して若干ではあるもののイコライズが施されたり、曲間のテープヒスを目立たなくする処理が施されていました。しかしそれとは別に当時Hobnail氏が公開した「DECCAGAIN」というタイトルは、見逃されがちですがこちらは幸いにも過剰なEQ処理もなく曲間もそのままで非常にナチュラル。音の鮮度は抜群で、オフィシャル「ANTHOLOGY 1」収録の「Hello Little Girl」と比較すると雲泥の差。今回はそちらを採用し、音質面に関しては一切手を加えていません。唯一「Money」のイントロの”ギュルン”とヨレる箇所をアジャストしました。これは元のテープから生じていた問題でして、80年代に入って本音源がハーフオフィシャル・リリースされて以降、巧みなコピペ編集にて隠蔽されていたものでもあり、今回は最新テクノロジーを駆使してテープのヨレそのものを他所からのフェイクでパッチすることなく修復しました。
次に収録されているのは今回の「BBC BROADCASTS 1962-1964: JOE POPE REELS」からメインのアッパー版パートだけをまとめたものです。今回初登場の音質向上箇所の目玉だけを聞ければいい…という向きにもこちらを推したいと思いますし、デッカからBBC初出演という流れのアーリー・ビートルズ感も初心者にとっつきやすいのではないでしょうか。音質に関してもそれのメインであるリマスター・バージョンを採用、これがまた編集内容と相まって聞きやすくなっているのも魅力。

二枚目は一気に時代が飛んで1968年、ホワイト・アルバムとゲットバック・セッションの合間にポールがプロデュースしたアップル・アーティスト、メリー・ホプキンのアルバム「POST CARD」のレコーディング中に彼女とポール、さらにドノヴァンが軽く歌いながら打合せしている場面を捉えたもの。一応トライデント・スタジオという正規のレコーディング・スタジオでの録音ではありますが、アルバム用の本チャン・レコーディングの前の段階ですので、その場に居合わせた誰かによって録音されたモノラルのプライベート録音。
次に収録されているのは翌年、実質的にビートルズのラスト・アルバムとなった「ABBEY　ROAD」のラフミックス音源を収めたもの。1980年代初頭までビートルズのスタジオ音源の流出というのは極めて稀で「What’s The New Mary Jane」のようにアセテートに刻まれた段階の音源が辛うじて流出する程度。それだけに本音源の登場はマニアを騒然とさせたものでした。8トラック・ステレオ録音だった「ABBEY ROAD」の製作段階の音源がモノラルに落とされた状態ではありましたが、それでも各収録曲の完成前の段階が聞かれたインパクトは大きすぎたのです。それどころか、ここで聞かれる「Something」、「You Never Give Me Your Money」それぞれがジャムに雪崩れ込む未編集バージョンは現在の「ABBEY ROAD」デラックスでも聞けない貴重音源として未だに価値が色褪せていません。
本音源に関しては数年前のファン・リリース「POPE GO THE BEATLES」にてリールからDATに落とされたベスト・バージョンが登場。今回もそれをベースにしつつ、「Something」のエンディングは最長収録だった懐かしのVigotone盤でパッチして最長収録を実現しました。「POPE GO～」のインフォによれば、本音源と先のドノヴァン音源はポープがデッカ音源を入手した際に一緒にオマケとして付いてきたリールだったようです。
そしてラストにはポープの処女作である未発表曲「How Do You Do It」と「Revolution」PVバージョンをカップリングしたシングルを収録…と行きたいところですが、オリジナルのシングルがレア故に調達できず、それをコピー（さらには彼のDeccagoneシングルも）してまとめたアメリカ製LP「DECCAGONE SESSIONS」からリマスターしボーナス収録。しかしこれがコピー盤LPから収録したとは思えないほどクリーンな状態で収録できています。

これまで集大成をリリースしてきたロジャー・スコットやジョン・バレットは所謂「業界側」の人間だった訳ですが、ポープはマニアが高じて昇り詰めてみせた人。それ故にEMI音源以外が占める割合が多い。だからこそ「ABBEY ROAD」のラフミックス音源の入手は偉業だったのですが、そこまでの音源が彼の手だけに収まるはずもなく、本音源とデッカ音源は当時アンダーグラウンド界の女王だったVicky Vinylのアンドレアの手にダビングされたテープが渡り、それぞれ「THE DECCA TAPES」、「NO.3 ABBEY ROAD NW8」という名盤が生み出されました。むしろそれらのリリースで各音源を聞いた人の方が多いのではないでしょうか。
ところが、いざ蓋を開けてみれば音質がベストなのはやはり元のリールを所有していたポープのバージョン。この辺りはアンダーグラウンド・メーカーとエキスパート・マニアの格の差を見せつけた形になったのです。つまり「THE DECCA～」と「NO.3 ABBEY～」それぞれのアッパー版を収録…と例えれば、いかに彼の音源が優れており、今回のリリースが掛け値なしにベストであると断言いたします。
そしてデビュー前音源の超定番でもあるデッカ・テープをフィーチャーしたことから、パッケージは「シルバー・ビートルズ」的レイアウトに「ゴールデン・ビートルズ」的な色合いのフォントという、懐かしき80年代のリリース（解りますよね？笑）を彷彿とさせる仕上がり。初心者でも楽しめるポープ音源の集大成でありながら、なおかつマニアをニヤリとさせるパッケージにてリリース！「THE COMPLETE ROGER SCOTT TAPES: DEFINITIVE EDITION」や「THE COMPLETE JOHN BARRETT TAPES: DEFINITIVE EDITION」と共に、ぜひコレクションに加えていただきたい一枚です！

★デッカ・オーディション・テープについて
もはやデッカにはおそらくオリジナルマスターテープが現存しないと思われますが（スタジオにオーディションのテープを保管しておく規約はない為）、幸いにもオーディションの際に録音エンジニアだったマイク・サベージが、同日のザ・トレメローズ（彼らが合格）のオーディション録音と一緒にコピーを作成していました。
その後1976年の終わりから77年の初め、英国の無名ジャーナリストが当時のオーディションを記事にすることの許可を求めてデッカにコンタクトを取りました。何とデッカは彼にテープを貸すことを許可。この時テープを返却する前にジャーナリストがこっそりコピーを作成したと言われています。ジョー・ポープは1977年に5000ドルを支払ってオーディションのリールテープを入手しますが、タイミング的にもここが出所という可能性が高いとのこと。
もう一つ知られているマスターのコピーはブライアン・エプスタインがレコード会社への売り込み用に所有していた2本の10インチ・リールで、彼の死後、個人のコレクターに販売された模様。名盤「THE DECCA TAPES (Circuit Records)」はこちらのエプスタイン・テープがソースなのではないかとも言われています。
