The British music magazine New Musical Express has been one of the most influential rock media in the world, not only in the UK, since its inception in 1952. The acronym is often abbreviated as NME. NME has pushed the two British powers, especially the Beatles and Stones, and has been featured on many covers, which are now vintage collector’s items. In Japan, Music Life performed a popular vote for each band and musical instrument, but NME also sponsored a music award by voting every year. A concert like That is NME POLL WINNERS CONCERT (New Musical Express’s most popular concert). The first was held in 1953 and is now one of the most prestigious awards in the UK. The Beatles have been performing for 4 consecutive years from 1963 to 1966. This work is a collection of the NME POLL WINNERS CONCERT.

At the time of the first appearance in 1963, there is no video sound source left, and only a few photos are available. It is recorded that he wore a collarless suit that symbolizes the early Beatles and performed four songs “Please Please Me”, “From Me To You”, “Twist And Shout”, and “Long Tall Sally”.

In 1964, all video sources can now be viewed. The number of performance songs has increased from the previous year, 5 songs “She Loves You” “You Ca n’t Do That” “Twist And Shout” “Long Tall Sally” “Ca n’t Buy Me Love”. “You Ca n’t Do That” captures a scene in which John misunderstands the composition of the song. The last one ends with “Can’t Buy Me Love” instead of “Long Tall Sally”. In addition to being the latest single that was just released on March 20th, a month ago, it was 100 in the UK. The reason for this is that it was the best-selling song at that time, with a reservation of 10 million copies, 2.1 million copies in the US, and number 1 in the second week of release on the billboard. This number of reservations still remains as a Guinness record, and it was at this time that the Beatles monopolized from 1st to 5th place on the billboard including “Ca n’t Buy Me Love”. It can be said that it was the stage when the popularity of the Beatles had the most momentum.

In 1965, all video sources can now be viewed. At that time, 5 songs “I Feel Fine” “She ’s A Woman” “Baby ’s In Black” “Ticket To Ride” “Long Tall Sally”. The music selection is as if it was picked up from the music played on a regular tour. It is probably due to the nature of the concert that he plays mainly singles. Although it is rock, a relatively calm song is selected. In the introduction of the song “Baby ’s In Black”, Paul says “Baby ’s in… Blackpool”. This is a joke of black “Black” and place name “Blackpool”. The Beatles wear the same costume as the Share Stadium. Since the image of the share stadium does not include “She ’s A Woman”, I imagined that somehow doubled the image.

Unfortunately, in 1966 as well as 1963, there is no video source left. However, there are still beautiful and vivid color photographs of the Beatles wearing black and white costumes. It is recorded that five performance songs “I Feel Fine” “If I Needed Someone” “Day Tripper” “Nowhere Man” “I ’m Donw” were performed. It is noteworthy that George’s vocal songs were first performed at the NME concert. Both of these songs are played on the 1966 tour, and the end is the same as “I ’m Down”. As mentioned above, there is no video sound source left, but the only award-winning state is left in the video. 英国の音楽誌ニュー・ミュージカル・エキスプレスは1952年創刊以来、現在でも英国のみならず世界的に影響力となるロック・メディアのひとつである。頭文字をとってNMEと略されることが多い。NMEは特にビートルズとストーンズという英国の2大勢力をプッシュし、数多く表紙に起用、現在ではそれらはビンテージのコレクターズ・アイテムとなっている。日本でもミュージック・ライフがバンドや担当楽器ごとに人気投票を行なったりしていたが、NMEも毎年、投票による音楽賞を主催、選ばれたバンドを集め、自らの誌名を冠した紅白歌合戦のようなコンサートを行なっている。それがNME POLL WINNERS CONCERT（ニュー・ミュージカル・エキスプレスの人気上位コンサート）である。1953年に第一回が行なわれ、現在では英国内で最も権威ある賞のひとつとなっている。ビートルズは1963年から1966年まで4年連続で出演している。本作は、そのNME POLL WINNERS CONCERTを収録したものである。

1963年初出演時については、映像音源共に残されておらず、わずか写真で当日の様子を窺い知るのみである。初期ビートルズを象徴する襟無しスーツに身を包み、4曲「Please Please Me」「From Me To You」「Twist And Shout」「Long Tall Sally」を演奏したと記録にある。

1964年は映像音源共に現在全て視聴することが出来る。演奏曲は前年より増え5曲「She Loves You」「You Can’t Do That」「Twist And Shout」「Long Tall Sally」「Can’t Buy Me Love」。「You Can’t Do That」ではジョンが曲の構成を間違えて焦るシーンが捉えられている。最後が「Long Tall Sally」ではなく「Can’t Buy Me Love」で終わるのは、同シングルが一ケ月前の3月20日にリリースされたばかりの最新シングルであったことに加え、イギリスで100万枚、アメリカでは210万枚の予約が入り、ビルボードではリリース第二週にナンバー1になるなど、当時最も売れていた楽曲であることが理由であろう。この予約枚数は現在でもギネス記録として残っており、「Can’t Buy Me Love」を含むビルボード1位から5位までビートルズが独占したのもちょうどこの時期である。ビートルズの人気が最も勢いのあった時のステージであるといえる。

1965年も映像音源共に現在全て視聴することが出来る。この時も5曲「I Feel Fine」「She’s A Woman」「Baby’s In Black」「Ticket To Ride」「Long Tall Sally」。通常のツアーで演奏している楽曲からピック・アップしたかのような選曲である。シングルを中心に演奏しているのもコンサートの性質上故であろう。ロックでありながら比較的落ち着いた曲が選ばれている。「Baby’s In Black」の曲紹介ではポールが「Baby’s in … Blackpool」と述べている。黒の「Black」と地名の「Blackpool」と掛けたジョークである。なお、ビートルズはシェア・スタジアムと同じ衣装を着用している。シェア・スタジアムの映像は「She’s A Woman」が未収録なため、なんとなくイメージをダブらせて想像してしまう。

1966年もまた、1963年同様残念ながら映像音源共に残されていない。しかし上下黒の衣装を着用したビートルズの迫力ある美しい鮮やかなカラー写真が残されている。演奏曲は5曲「I Feel Fine」「If I Needed Someone」「Day Tripper」「Nowhere Man」「I’m Donw」を演奏したと記録にある。ジョージのボーカル曲が初めてNMEコンサートで披露された点が特筆される。いずれも1966年ツアーで演奏されている曲であり、最後は「I’m Down」で締めくくるのも同様である。前述の通り映像音源共に残されていないが、唯一受賞の様子が映像で残されている。特にスピーチをするでもないのだが、メンバーが登壇し受賞カップを受け取り、写真撮影に応じている様子を見ることが出来る。

本作は、4年連続で出演したNMEポール・ウィナーズ・コンサートの残された映像と音源を余すところなく収録したタイトルである。従来のタイトルと比べ画質がアップ・グレードしているのはもちろん、1964年と1965年の両コンサートのカラーライズ映像も収録している。その他当日の様子を伝えるニュース映像やバージョン違いなどを網羅し、NMEポール・ウィナーズ・コンサートの新たな決定盤となるであろうセットである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
