BAD COMPANY in 1989 was about to build a new golden age with Brian Howe, who died suddenly last year. Introducing a live album where you can enjoy a hot full show just before the re-break.
“June 24, 1989 Wilkes-Barre performance” is included in this work. It is the best audience recording. At that time, the second restart, “DANGEROUS AGE,” shined on a gold disc, and there were signs of a re-break. This is the 1988/1989 BAD COMPANY. The “FAME AND FORTUNE Tour” and “HOLY WATER Tour” also realized European tours, but the “DANGEROUS AGE” era was only in North America. The Wilkes-Barre performance of this work is the final edition among them. It was the second concert from the end of the last “North America # 4”.
This work recorded at such a show is a new excavation master of the topic now. Speaking of what is talked about, it is the best sound with “super” without any correction. After all, this work came out of a series of masterpiece excavation projects. The project is a series in which the prestigious “Krw_co” transfers the original master of the recording artist “luv sufo”. At our shop, RAINBOW’s “HARRISBURG 1982 (Black Box 029)” and GUNS N’ROSES’s “ALLENTOWN 1987 (Zodiac)” 399) ”, Ozzy’s“ BETHLEHEM 1984 (Zodiac 434) ”, and many other press masterpieces have been introduced. This work is the latest in such a winning collection.
In fact, the sound of this work further enhances its fame. It is not mistaken for a sound board because of its realistic applause and distant cheers, but it seems that the clearness of the playing sound and singing voice will be mistaken. Although I picked up the sound of the hall, it shines brilliantly, and it feels clearer rather than hiding the details. Of course, you can’t feel the distance, and the whole body seems to be tossed by the powerful and straight core and the glossy sound. It can be said that it is like an FM sound board, but it is an aesthetic sound that you should pay attention to the “beauty unique to the audience” hidden in it.
A full show with the astringency of blues rock and the pop feeling of FOREIGNER lined up with such an extremely beautiful sound. Speaking of live performances in the Howe era, the traditional official board “WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET” is more famous than anything else, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

… And it looks like this. While stocking classics from the Rogers era, what is rather valuable is the repertoire of the Howe era. I heard only “No Smoke Without A Fire” in “WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET”, but I don’t suffer anything else.
And it is Howe’s skill that I realize again with such numbers. Rather than blues, soul-rooted vocalizations, endless tension, sharp and edgy shouts … all of which are top notch. In the classics of the Rogers era, youthful dynamism comes first while listening to deep vibes. Third generation singer: Robert Hart was talked about as “Rogers Gourd”, but Howe is more like Lou Gramm. Not only the voice quality and singing style, but also the free skill on the stage is the same level (Joe Lynn Turner was once said to be the representative of the Lou Gramm system, but Howe is by far thinner. ).
After this work, one performance was completed and the “DANGEROUS AGE Tour” was completed. The next work “HOLY WATER” will be a shining hit on the platinum album, and BAD COMPANY will enter the second golden age. This work is on the verge of that. It’s a moment when I was about to break the glass ceiling called “Bad Company without Rogers”, and I can feel the popularity of it before the re-break. そんな本作に収められているのは「1989年６月24日ウィルクス・バリ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。当時は再始動第二弾となる『DANGEROUS AGE』がゴールド・ディスクに輝き、再ブレイクの兆しが見えてきた頃。まずは、そんな当時のスケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1988年／1989年のBAD COMPANY。”FAME AND FORTUNE Tour”や”HOLY WATER Tour”では欧州ツアーも実現しましたが、『DANGEROUS AGE』時代は北米のみでした。本作のウィルクス・バリ公演は、その中でも最終盤。ラスト「北米#4」の最後から２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、今話題の新発掘マスター。何が話題かと言えば、取りも直さず「超」付きの極上サウンドです。何しろ、本作は傑作連発の発掘プロジェクトから出てきたもの。そのプロジェクトとは録音家「luvsufo」の大元マスターを名門「Krw_co」がトランスファーするシリーズでして、当店でもRAINBOWの『HARRISBURG 1982（Black Box 029）』やGUNS N’ ROSESの『ALLENTOWN 1987（Zodiac 399）』、オジーの『BETHLEHEM 1984（Zodiac 434）』など、プレス名盤を多数ご紹介してきました。本作は、そんな必勝コレクションの最新弾なのです。
実際、本作のサウンドはその名声を一層高めるもの。リアルな拍手や遠く広がる大歓声からしてサウンドボードと間違えたりはしませんが、演奏音や歌声のクリアさは思わず間違えてしまいそう。ホール鳴りも拾ってはいるものの、それがキラキラと輝いており、ディテールを隠すどころか一層クリアに感じられる。もちろん、距離など感じられず、力強く真っ直ぐ伸びる芯と艶やかな鳴りに全身がトロけそう。ひと口に「まるでFMサウンドボード」と言い切る事もできますが、むしろそこに潜む「オーディエンスならではの美しさ」に注目していただきたい美学のサウンドなのです。
そんな極めつけの美音で描かれるのは、ブルースロックの渋味とFOREIGNER的なポップ感が並び立つフルショウ。ハウ時代のライヴと言えば、何よりも伝統の公式盤『WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET』が有名ですので、比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ロジャース時代のクラシックスも取り揃えつつ、貴重なのはむしろハウ時代のレパートリー。「No Smoke Without A Fire」だけは『WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET』でも聴けましたが、それ以外はすべて被らないのです。
そして、そうしたナンバーで改めて実感するのはハウの巧さ。ブルースというよりはソウルに根ざした発声、どこまでも伸びる張り、鋭くエッジの効いたシャウト……どれをとっても超一流。ロジャース時代のクラシックスでは深いヴァイヴも聴かせつつ、あくまで若々しい躍動感が先に立つ。三代目シンガー：ロバート・ハートは「ロジャース瓜二つ」と話題になりましたが、ハウはむしろルー・グラムに酷似している。声質や唱法だけでなく、ステージでの自在な巧さも同レベルです（かつてジョー・リン・ターナーがルー・グラム系の代表のように言われていましたが、断然ハウの方が肉薄しています）。
本作の後１公演をこなして“DANGEROUS AGE Tour”は終了。次作『HOLY WATER』がプラチナ・アルバムに輝くヒットとなり、BAD COMPANYは第二次黄金期を迎える事になります。本作は、その寸前。「ロジャースがいないバドカン」というガラスの天井を今まさに破ろうとしていた刹那であり、再ブレイクを控えた人気ぶりもリアルに感じ取れるのです。ある種、懐メロ的な活動に終始しているロジャース復帰後よりも瑞々しかったブライアン・ハウ時代。見逃されがちな時代を極上体験させてくれる貴重な新発掘ライヴアルバム。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
