1970年代後半、時代はパンクが全盛を迎えていた。反体制の過激な歌詞をシンプルかつ稚拙ながら攻撃的な演奏スタイルで歌う、そして音楽のみならずファッションに至るまで、トータルな生き様としてのパンクが若者に大いに受け入れられており、レッド・ツェッペリンなどは巨大な存在になり過ぎて身動きがとれなくなった恐竜のような古い存在と見做されていた。時代は刻々と変化していたこと、それをツェッペリンも意識せざるを得ない時期が来ていたのである。

アルバム『イン・スルー・ジ・アウトドア』は1978年11月にレコーディングが始まり、翌1979年にリリースされた。それまでバンドの主導権を握っていたのは常にジミー・ペイジであったが、このアルバムはジョン・ポール・ジョーンズにその主導権を譲り渡したかのように、彼の色彩が色濃く反映されたものとなっている。前作『プレゼンス』がキーボードレスのアルバムだったのとは対照的に、このアルバムではキーボードが前面に押し出され、作曲においてもジミーを上回る曲数でクレジットされている。そして、このアルバムの発表に伴い、1980年に欧州ツアーが発表されるのであった。TOUR OVER EUROPEと題された3年ぶりのツアーは、後に予定している全米ツアーの予行のような位置づけでもあったのであろう、全14公演と小規模なものであり、マスコミが辛口な英国を避け、西ドイツを中心とした欧州を回ることが発表されたのである。

1980年の欧州ツアーは、サウンドボード音源がここまで広く流通している現在とは異なり、リアルタイムでは謎に包まれたツアーであった。写真で見ることの出来るステージの様子は、ジーンズにＴシャツというラフなスタイルのプラントに、髪を短く刈り込んだジョン・ポール・ジョーンズ、かつての70年代の雰囲気を一掃し、これから迎える80年代を強く意識したものとなっている。そしてステージにおいては、驚くべきことにジミー・ペイジがMCをしゃべっているのも、従来見られなかった光景である。ツェッペリン自身が、新しい時代のスタイルを模索していたのかもしれない。しかし一方で、時代を作るのではなく、時代に即すという、いわば迎合的な姿勢は、バンドの保守化と終焉を予感させられるものでもあった。

コンサートは意外や1969年当時と同じヤードバーズの「Train Kept A Rollin’」で開幕する。長いブランク開けに際し、原点回帰しようという意識の表れであったのかもしれない。ニュー・アルバム『イン・スルー・ジ・アウトドア』からは「In The Evening」「Hot Dog」「All My Love」の3曲にとどまっており、それ以外は全て過去の曲の再演となっている。また全体的にコンパクトな構成で、ショウは全体で2時間程度の長さに収まっている。長大な「幻惑されて」や「ノー・クォーター」、「モビーディック」などは全て省かれ、非常にシンプルなステージである。コンサート本編は各公演共通だが、アンコールがほぼ日替わりのセットリストとなっている。

【1980年6月18日 COLOGNE公演】
大聖堂が鎮座するドイツはケルンにおけるコンサート。ドルトムントに続いてこの日がツアー二日目になる。この日のアンコールは「コミュニケーション・ブレイクダウン」である。既発盤が少ない公演であるが、高音質のサウンドボードで収録された優れたタイトルである。このサウンドボードは音質的には完璧なのだが、3曲においてカットがある。まず最初が「THE RAIN SONG」のエンディングの約30秒間、「ACHILLES LAST STAND」と「STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN」の曲中それぞれ約2分間である。本作ではそれらを初登場のオーディエンス音源で補完することによりコンサートを完全収録している。肝心のオーディエンス音源だが、時代が1980年なだけあって非常に優れたものであり、メインとなるサウンドボード音源と比較しても遜色なく、むしろこちらの方が良いのではないかと思わせる高音質なものである。編集個所を聞いても違和感はあまりないのが驚きである。

またWendyレーベルが常にそうであるようにピッチ調整も完璧に合わせてある。本作のメインとして使用されているサウンドボード音源はファースト・ジェネレーションという触れ込みであるが、おそらくマスターから落とす時のマーキングであろう、曲が始まってすぐといった中途半端な場所でピッチの変化が見られた。既発盤はそこまで厳密に行なわれていないザックリとしたピッチ調整にとどまっていたが、本作では細かくピッチを補正しプラマイゼロになっているのもアピール・ポイントである。

そしてボーナストラックとして、オーディエンス音源による補完が必要だった前述の3曲をオーディエンス音源で収録している。本編はサウンドボードがメインでそれを補完する形であったが、曲中カットがない状態で収録しようという意図で、ここにノーカット版として3曲のオーディエンス音源を収録している。

【TOUR OVER COLOGNE 1980】
本作はツアー二日目の1980年6月18日ケルン公演をサウンドボードで収録している。わずかな欠落部分は初登場のオーディエンス音源で補完し完全収録。いずれもファースト・ジェネのソースを使用しており、音質的にはこれ以上望めないものとなっている。ピッチ調整も完璧に調整が施してある。またボーナストラックとして本編ではSBD+AUDで補完されていた3曲のAUDのみの未編集バージョンを収録している。これにより音質的にも内容的にもベストタイトルとなっている。何より既発盤が少ないコンサートであるため、本作で初めて耳にするというファンも多いのではないだろうか。美しいピクチャーディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
