ZZ TOP in 1993 participated in the 90th anniversary event of “Harley-Davidson”, a symbol of American motorcycles. Introducing a superb live album where you can fully experience a special performance where super rare songs pop out.
Such a work was recorded on “June 12, 1993”. A transcendental audience recording of the 90th anniversary concert in Milwaukee, where Harley’s headquarters are located. First of all, from the tour schedule … I would like to say, but in 1993 there was no album release or tour. Only three special stages (once in June + twice in October) appeared publicly, and this work was also the first show.
The show itself is unique, but the sound that conveys it is also special. Actually, it was a recording that was once distributed as a sound board in some parts, and anyway, the fiercely clear & thick core jumps into the ear with plenty of direct feeling. Although there is a slight audience-likeness in the realistic enthusiasm and tone, the so-called hall sound is not felt, and even the finest parts are vivid and clear.
The reason for the super clear sound was the venue. The site, “Marcus Amphitheater,” has a ceiling above the stage and front seats, but there are no walls on all sides, and the rear seats are completely open spaces. It is a “semi-outdoor” venue. The recording position of this work has not been transmitted, but it is probably on the side of the PA tower set up for the rear seats. Even though the performance sound and vocals are so close that they are intense, the hot and thick cheers are far and wide. This kind of balance is often found on the PA tower side, which is a relatively quiet and distant seat. Regardless of the fact, this work is a live album where you can enjoy “super powerful performance sound” and “great cheers that depict only the spectacle deliciously” in a miraculous balance.
And the main subject. The biggest point of this work is the super rare full show because it is a special performance. To explain its meaning, let’s organize the contents of the set here.

… And it looks like this. It seems to be a comprehensive career, and is full of delicious rare songs. “Francine”, “Mexican Blackbird”, “She Loves My Automobile”, “Planet of Women”, “Tell It”, and a lot of selections with a twist. At that time, “GREATEST HITS”, which covered the big hit era, was selling stupidly, but the new songs “Gun Love” and “Viva Las Vegas” were also shown.
Especially intense are the “Gun Love” and Smiley Lewis’s cover “Blue Monday”. These two songs are recorded only on this day later and earlier. Another song, surprisingly rare, is “Arrested for Driving While Blind”. It was played relatively in the 80’s, but this event was the last set to drop. Although I played it again in 2003, this work is almost the last performance.
In addition to the ultimate rare song that is literally only once, a special performance full of rare songs that are hard to hear on a regular tour. It is a masterpiece of a live album where you can enjoy it with a super direct sound because it is semi-outdoor. ZZ TOP is a genuine live band, but there are few live albums even if it is official. 米国産バイクの象徴“ハーレーダビッドソン”の90周年イベントに参加した1993年のZZ TOP。超激レア曲も飛び出す特別公演をフル体験できる超極上ライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1993年６月12日」。ハーレーの本社があるミルウォーキーで行われた90周年コンサートの超絶級オーディエンス録音です。まずはツアー・スケジュールから……と言いたいところですが、1993年はアルバムの発表もツアーもなし。公に姿を現したのは３回の特別ステージ（６月に１回＋10月に２回）だけであり、本作はその最初のショウでもありました。
ショウ自体が唯一無二なのですが、それを伝えるサウンドもスペシャル。実はかつて一部でサウンドボードとしても流通していた録音で、とにかく猛烈クリア＆極太な芯がダイレクト感たっぷりに耳元に飛び込む。リアルな熱狂や音色にオーディエンスらしさもわずかにあるものの、いわゆるホール鳴りも感じられず、微細部まで鮮やかクッキリなのです。
それほどの超クリア・サウンドとなった要因は会場。現場となった“マーカス・アンフィシアター”は、ステージや前方席の頭上に天井はあるものの、四方に壁がなく、後方席は完全なオープン・スペース。「半野外」な会場なのです。本作の録音ポジションまでは伝わっていませんが、恐らくは後方席用に立てられたＰＡ塔の側なのではないでしょうか。と言うのも、演奏音もヴォーカルも強烈なほど近いのに、熱くぶ厚い大喝采が遠く広い。こういうバランスになるのは、比較的ノリの大人しい遠方席のＰＡ塔側が多いのです。まあ事実がどうあれ、本作には「超強力な演奏音」と「スペクタクルだけを美味しく描いた大歓声」が奇跡的なバランスで楽しめるライヴアルバムなのです。
そして、本題。本作最大のポイントは、特別公演だからこその超レアなフルショウ。その意味をご説明するためにも、ここでセット内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。幅広くキャリアを総括しているように見えて、美味しいレア曲が満載。「Francine」「Mexican Blackbird」「She Loves My Automobile」「Planet of Women」「Tell It」と、ヒネリの利いたセレクトが山盛り。当時は大ヒット時代を網羅した『GREATEST HITS』がバカ売れしていたわけですが、その新曲「Gun Love」「Viva Las Vegas」も披露されているのです。
特に強烈なのは、その「Gun Love」とスマイリー・ルイスのカバー「Blue Monday」。この２曲は後にも先にもこの日にしか記録がないのです。もう１曲、意外にレアなのが「Arrested for Driving While Blind」。80年代にはわりと演奏されていたわけですが、このイベントを最後にセット落ち。2003年にもう１回演奏してはいるものの、ほぼほぼ本作がラスト・パフォーマンスなのです。
