Yngwie Malmsteen, a little 20 years old, who started a guitar revolution with ALCATRAZZ and tried to turn into a solo as soon as possible. The official treasure board where the youthful heat spouts is the gift release decision.
The true identity of this work is the official promotion LP “RADIO SPECIAL (MI 4137)” produced by POLYDOR Records. It is a CD directly from the highest quality board. This LP is an interview album produced when the solo debut work “RISING FORCE” was released. While playing the studio track (5 songs) of “RISING FORCE”, young Yngwie talks with Japanese guitarist T ○ K Yonemochi as a listener.
Yngwie’s comment, which was full of blood at the age of 20, as well as what to listen to. Now, let’s take a look at the content of the interview.
— How is the result of “RISING FORCE”? What is your favorite song?
YM: Everything is great! Everything was done as I wanted, and in a sense it was more than I expected. Among them, “Far Beyond The Sun” and “Black Star” are special. But I like all songs.
— How do you compose? What inspires you?
YM: I get inspiration from books and movies. But most of them come to me naturally when I play the guitar.
— The new group is also RISING FORCE, isn’t it? Reunion of the band from the Swedish era?
YM: I used to do it in Sweden with the same name, but it’s a new group. I used to do it locally with some of the members, but the time was off. Jens Johansson is a terrific keyboard player. It’s really fun to be with him. His brother Anders is a drummer. Vocal Jeff Scott Soto was sought out through MTV. Very young and good at singing. Marcel Jacob is a bassist who used to work with RISING FORCE for about two years.
— What kind of music do you want to do with the new group RISING FORCE?
YM: When I start the tour, I’m thinking of doing something really heavy and melodious. It’s a sophisticated but energetic heavy rock … The atmosphere may be different from the 1st album. I thought “RISING FORCE” was completely an instrument. Not so commercial. However, the songs for the band’s album (later “MARCHING OUT”) have already been worked out, and it feels like an interesting guitar solo. cheers! (That’s why beer is gubi)
— Is there a special practice method? Did you study music theory?
YM: I don’t practice! It’s just fun and playing. So is the composition. It’s done while you play and play. I have never been trained and have never been to school. But all I listen to is classical music. Self-taught classical songs on the album. You can play like a classical guitar, but I think my style is similar to a violin. I can’t play a real violin, though. I can read the score, but I think I need the basics when composing. It’s necessary to create a classical atmosphere, such as harmony and composition.
— Is solo a kneading type? Or improvisation?
YM: Completely improvised! I don’t play the same solo during rehearsals. So the recording is also fresh. 90% of (1st album) is also the first take. Sometimes when I listen to the album again, I want to do my favorite solo again, but I do some of it on stage. Never attract them all in the same way. It’s not that creative.
–What made you start playing the guitar?
YM: My mother gave me a guitar when I was five. She didn’t play until she was 7-8 years old, but she watched Jimi Hendrix on TV and thought, “Let’s play me too. I’ll break the guitar too!” Besides Jimi, I liked Ritchie Blackmore. But it’s not similar, right? Aside from good and bad, are n’t they similar? The most influential thing was classical music. If you like to go see it these days, it’s a band with a skillful violinist. Like Jean-Luc Ponty. I’m quiet recently, but maybe Keith Emerson. I don’t like guitarists these days.
The whole sentence was enormous, so I kept it as a free translation, but it looks like this. Even if the content is praised by the members at that time, the voice that is uplifting to the first solo album is also intensely radiating the scent of “1984”. And when it is played while being entwined with the comment, the masterpieces of “RISING FORCE” can be heard even more powerfully.
The “revolution of guitar playing” at ALCATRAZZ was also a shock, but the “creation of neoclassical music” at “RISING FORCE” was even more intense. A masterpiece that fuses rock and classical music at the composition level rather than phrases, and is packed with instrumental songs that can impress even people who do not play musical instruments. ALCATRAZZでギター大革命を起こし、早くもソロへの転身を図った若干二十歳のイングヴェイ・マルムスティーン。その若さ溢れる熱気が噴き出すオフィシャルの秘宝盤がギフト・リリース決定です。
そんな本作の正体とは、POLYDORレコードが制作した公式プロモーションLP『RADIO SPECIAL（MI 4137）』。その極上クオリティ盤からダイレクトにCD化したものです。このLPはソロ・デビュー作『RISING FORCE』のリリース時に制作されたインタビュー・アルバム。『RISING FORCE』のスタジオ・トラック（５曲）を流しつつ、合間に日本人ギタリストのT○K米持氏を聞き手として若きイングヴェイが語っていくのです。
聴きどころはもちろん、二十歳で血気盛んだったイングヴェイのコメント。それでは、インタビュー内容をかいつまんでご紹介しましょう。
—『RISING FORCE』の出来はどう？ 一番気に入ってる曲は？
YM：全部、最高だ！ すべて自分の思い通りに出来たし、ある意味では予想以上だ。中でも特別なのは「Far Beyond The Sun」「Black Star」は特別かな。でも全曲好きだ。
—どんな風に作曲するの？ 何にインスピレーションされる？
YM：本や映画からインスピレーションを受けるよ。でも大半はギターを弾いてる時に自然と浮かぶんだ。
—ニューグループもRISING FORCEなんだよね？ スウェーデン時代のバンドの再結成？
YM：スウェーデンでも同じ名前でやっていたけど、ニューグループさ。メンバーの何人かとは地元でもやってたけど、時期がズレてたしね。ヤンス・ヨハンソンはとにかく物凄いキーボーディストさ。彼とは一緒にやれて本当に楽しい。彼の兄アンダースがドラマーなんだ。ヴォーカルのジェフ・スコット・ソートはMTVを通じて探し出した。すごく若くて歌が巧い。マルセル・ヤコブは昔RISING FORCEで２年くらい一緒にやったベーシストだ。
—ニューグループRISING FORCEとどんな音楽をやっていきたい？
YM：ツアーを始めたら、本当にヘヴィでメロディアスなものをやろうと思ってる。洗練されてるけどエネルギッシュなヘヴィロックと言うか……1stアルバムとは雰囲気が違うかも知れない。『RISING FORCE』は完全にインストとして考えていたからね。それほどコマーシャルじゃないし。でも、バンドのアルバム（その後の『MARCHING OUT』）用の曲はもう練ってあるし、そこに面白いギターソロを乗せた感じさ。乾杯！（と言ってビールをグビ）
—特別な練習法ってある？ 音楽理論の勉強とかした？
YM：練習なんかしないよ！ ただ楽しくて弾いてるだけさ。作曲もそうだよ。弾いて弾いて弾いてるうちに出来上がるんだ。トレーニングも受けた事ないし、学校に行ったこともない。でも、聴くものはクラシックばかりだ。アルバムのクラシック曲も独学。クラシックギターのような演奏もできるけど、俺のスタイルはヴァイオリンに近いんじゃないかな。本当のヴァイオリンは弾けないけどさ。譜面も読めるけど、基礎が必要になるのは作曲の時かな。ハーモニーとか構成とか、クラシカルな雰囲気を出すためには必要だから。
—ソロは練るタイプ？ それとも即興？
YM：完全にインプロヴァイズ！ リハーサルでも同じソロは弾かないよ。だからレコーディングも新鮮でね。（1stアルバム）も90％がファースト・テイクなんだ。アルバムを改めて聴き直した時に気に入ったソロをまたやりたいと思う時もあるけど、それもステージで一部やるくらい。全部同じように惹くことは絶対にない。そんなのクリエイティヴじゃないからね。
–ギターを始めたきっかけは？
YM：母が５才の時にギターをくれたんだ。７ー８歳まで弾かなかったけど、TVでジミヘンを観て「ボクも弾こう。ボクもギターをぶっ壊すんだ！」って思ったんだよ。ジミの他にはリッチー・ブラックモアが好きだったね。でも似ていないだろ？ 良い悪いは別にして、似てないよな？ 一番影響を受けたのはクラシックなんだ。最近好んで見に行くなら巧いヴァイオリニストがいるバンドだ。ジャン・リュック・ポンティとか。あと最近大人しいけどキース・エマーソンかな。最近はギタリストを気に入ることはないね。
全文を書き起こすと膨大なのでかなり意訳に留めましたが、このような感じです。当時のメンバーを絶賛する内容にしても、初めてのソロ・アルバムに高揚する声色も、強烈なまでに「1984年」の薫りを発散している。そして、そのコメントと絡めながら流されると、『RISING FORCE』の名曲群がさらに力強く聞こえてくるのです。
ALCATRAZZでの「ギター奏法の革命」も衝撃でしたが、『RISING FORCE』での「ネオクラシカル音楽の創出」はさらに強烈でした。フレーズではなく作曲レベルでロックとクラシックを融合させ、楽器を弾かない人間にも感動できるほどのインスト曲が詰まりに詰まった大名盤。そんな大革命の真っ直中にいたイングヴェイのパッションをリアルに感じられる１枚。どうぞ、この機会にお試しください。
