YES who overcame the death of Alan White and resumed live activities. Introducing the finest live album where you can fully experience their latest stage, which has also been announced for their performance in Japan.
It is “June 21, 2022 London performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is a superb audience recording recorded at the traditional famous venue “Royal Albert Hall (hereinafter RAH)”. Originally, they planned “THE ALBUM SERIES Tour” with the theme of “Relayer” reproduction, but it was postponed after postponement with the new Corona Pandemic. In the meantime, 2022 was reached, and we decided to precede the 50th anniversary tour with the theme of complete reproduction of “crisis”. Meanwhile, Jon Anderson also independently announced the 50th anniversary tour of “Crisis”. It is also supposed that the two who are separated from each other will collide with each other on the same theme. This is the YES / John Anderson schedule that has been announced so far. The “UK / Japan” leg is the “Crisis” 50th anniversary tour on the YES side, and “North America # 2” is the 50th anniversary tour on the John side. It is not a direct confrontation because the country does not suffer, but you can see the situation where both tours at almost the same time. There is also a YES “Europe” leg scheduled for 2023, but this is a different theme. It will be “THE ALBUM SERIES Tour” which is a reproduction of “Relayer” which has been postponed. Among them, the RAH performance of this work was the sixth performance of the “UK” leg.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed show, is a beautiful recording that impresses with the sound unique to the traditional venue RAH. It’s not the type that can be mistaken for a sound board, but it’s not a drawback but an advantage. The profound and delicate hall sound is extremely beautiful, creating not only thickness and dynamism but also solemnity. It fits perfectly into YES’s symphonic rock, with beautiful melodies and harmonies pouring down from heaven.
I just talked about how beautiful it was, but of course it was out of focus, and if I felt the distance, I fell down. However, this work is not so. I think that the details may be clouded by the thick sound, but the outline of the core is clearly sharp in the sound. And because of the dense core, there is no feeling of squishy and it does not become a distance. YES is always a band that suits audience recordings, but matching so far is not so. Perhaps RAH is a sacred place for YES music.
What is drawn with such a fat beautiful sound is a panoramic view of the 50th anniversary tour of the “crisis” of interest. Let’s organize the contents here to explain the structure of the show.

The biggest thing to listen to is the complete reproduction of “crisis”, but the first part cannot be underestimated. Anyway, it is wide and rich in variety. No core album has been set, from the 2nd album “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed” to the new song of “THE QUEST” released last year. Go back and forth. The second half is a simple “crisis + two classic songs”, and the mood changes drastically in the first and second half. You can enjoy the intense contrast as if it were another concert.
Alan’s news came in, so I wasn’t happy with the news of the performance in Japan. It’s been a month since then, and I think it’s because I’ve regained some calm that I’m expecting it again. This work is a full live album that is perfect for such “now”. This is not just a preparation for coming to Japan, but one that is necessary to look forward again and confront YES music. これが現在までに公表されているYES／ジョン・アンダーソンのスケジュール。「英国／日本」レッグがYES側の『危機』50周年ツアーで、「北米#2」がジョン側の50周年ツアーです。国が被らないので直接対決ではありませんが、ほぼ同時に両者がツアーする状況が見て取れます。また、2023年にはYESの「欧州」レッグも予定されていますが、こちらはテーマが別。延期が続いている『リレイヤー』再現の“THE ALBUM SERIES Tour”となる予定です。その中で本作のRAH公演は、「英国」レッグの６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、伝統会場RAHならではの音響が心に染みる美録音。サウンドボードと間違えるようなタイプではないのですが、それが欠点ではなく思いっきり長所。重厚できめ細やかなホール鳴りがとことん美しく、厚みやダイナミズムに留まらず、荘厳さまで生み出している。それがYESのシンフォニック・ロックにぴったりフィットし、美しいメロディとハーモニーが天から降り注いでくるのです。
あまりの美しさに鳴りの話ばかりしてしまいましたが、もちろんボケボケだったり、遠さを感じたら本末転倒。しかし、本作はそうではない。パッと聴いた感じでは厚めの鳴りにディテールが曇るかとも思うのですが、その鳴りの中で芯の輪郭はくっきりと切り立っている。そして、その芯の濃密なためにスカスカ感が皆無で距離にならないのです。YESは常にオーディエンス録音が似合うバンドではありますが、ここまでのマッチングはそうそうない。もしかしたら、RAHはYESミュージックにとって聖地なのかも知れません。
そんなファットな美音で描かれるのは、注目の『危機』50周年ツアーの全景。ショウの構成をご説明するためにも、ここで内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ショウは二部構成となっており、「第一部＝通常スタイル」＋「第二部＝『危機』の完全再現」＋「アンコール２曲」。最大の聴きどころは『危機』の完全再現になるわけですが、第一部も侮れない。とにかく幅広く、バラエティ豊か。軸となるアルバムは設定されておらず、2ndアルバムの「No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed」から去年リリースされた『THE QUEST』の新曲に至るまで、次に何が飛び出すか分からないほど豪快に時代を行き来する。後半がシンプルな「危機＋ド定番２曲」ということもあり、前後半でムードがガラッと変化。まるで別コンサートかのように強烈なコントラストが楽しめるのです。
アランの訃報が飛び込んできたために、これまで今ひとつ喜べなかった来日公演の知らせ。あれから１ヶ月が経ち、少し落ち着きを取り戻してきたからこそ、改めて期待も込み上げてきたのではないでしょうか。本作は、そんな「今」にぴったりのフル・ライヴアルバムです。単に来日の予習としてだけでなく、再び前を向いてYESミュージックと対峙するために必要な１本。どうぞ、じっくりと噛みしめてください。
