Whitney Houston in the 90’s, whose first starring movie “Bodyguard” and soundtrack album recorded astronomical hits and stood at the top of the music world. Introducing a special version of the symbolic image that represents his heyday.
“November 13, 1994 Johannesburg performance” is included in this work. A multi-camera pro shot of a special concert celebrating President Nelson Mandela. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and had just taken office after South Africa’s first all-race election. This is Whitney Houston in 1993/1994. I miss the performance in Japan that occupied the Budokan for a whole week, but the performance in South Africa is another year later. It was the last three days of the world tour, and this work was a concert that was the middle of the day.
This show was broadcast on TV from HBO and attracted worldwide attention. Not only did it produce a number of already-released groups, but also a large number of VHS / DVDs with unknown rights appeared, making it a symbolic image that is treated as an official work for Whitney, who has few official concert works. This work is also a big classic pro shot, but it is not a copy that has already been released. A Japanese broadcast version broadcast by a certain satellite broadcasting station. And the point is the subtitles unique to Japanese broadcasting. This broadcast does not have a bonus corner like a commentary by a celebrity, but the MC has Japanese subtitles. This is especially important. As mentioned earlier, this show is a tribute to President Mandela, often spoken by Whitney, who is in the midst of a revolution in the times. It can be quite long, so if the story is refreshing, it will be quite dull. However, thanks to the subtitles, the content of this work can be understood intuitively. I wrote down the particularly long ones in the following songs, but if it’s just letters, it’s totally different from the feeling that it’s the same as Whitney’s real voice at the scene, even if it’s just a rhetoric. The length of the feeling oozes out from the voice, and when the scat and the melody come in as it is and the snow falls into the song, I am deeply moved. It also touches on performances in Japan, and it is a special edition of Japan that really pierces the hearts of Japanese people.
It has been 10 years since Whitney died unexpectedly. How wonderful we have lost our singing voice and talent! It is one that reminds me of the pain. これが1993年／1994年のホイットニー・ヒューストン。丸一週間も武道館を占領した来日公演も懐かしいですが、南アフリカ公演はさらに１年後。ワールド・ツアー最後の３日間であり、本作はその中日にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウはHBOからTV放送され、世界的にも注目。数々の既発群を生み出したばかりか、権利不明なVHS／DVDも大量に出回り、公式なコンサート作品の少ないホイットニーにとって半ばオフィシャル作品的な扱いまでされる象徴映像となりました。本作もまた、大定番プロショットなわけですが、既発のコピーではない。某衛星放送局によって流された日本放送バージョン。当店ではコアな記録マニア提供の極上マスターで音楽番組の数々をアーカイヴしておりますが、本作はその最新弾なのです。
実際、本作のクオリティは完全オフィシャル級。時代柄アナログ感は否めないものの、それでも発掘物なら現代でも堂々と公式作品として通るクオリティです。しかも、マスターの保存状態が完璧。白線ノイズどこかホンの僅かな歪みも見当たらない艶やかさは、まさに当時の放送電波が時空を超えて飛び込んできたような映像美なのです。
そんなパーフェクト・クオリティで描かれるのは、一大全盛のド真ん中にある充実感と特別ステージの臨む気迫が織りなす熱唱。多くのバージョンと同様に「Queen of the Night」がされているのは放送の関係なので致し方ないものの、それ以外に当日演奏された全曲がたっぷり楽しめる。ここでそのラインナップも整理しておきましょう。

そして、ポイントなのが日本放送ならではの字幕。この放送は有名人による解説のようなオマケ・コーナはないのですが、MCに日本語字幕を完備しているのです。これが殊の外重要。前述のように、このショウはマンデラ大統領を讃えるためのものであり、時代の大変革の真っ直中にいるホイットニーがよく語る。それが結構長かったりもするので、話がサッパリだとかなりダレてしまう。ところが本作は字幕のお陰で内容が直感的に理解できるわけです。特に長いものは下記曲目にも記しておきましたが、文字だけだと単なる美辞麗句でも現場のホイットニーの肉声と同時だと感慨がまるで違う。声色から想いの丈が滲み出し、スキャットやそのままメロディが入ってきて曲へ雪崩れ込むと感慨もひとしお。日本公演にも触れますし、まさに日本人の心に刺さる日本特別版なのです。
