The sound board album, which was called the highest peak of the John Sykes era, has been brushed up. A permanent storage press CD that has undergone high-definition mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is born!

The engraving on this work is “January 19, 1985 Rio de Janeiro performance”. It is a sound board recording recorded in the legendary “1st RIOCK IN RIO”. WHITESNAKE at that time was also a time when British rock heroes gathered and repeatedly changed members violently. 《Cozy Powell withdrawal》

This is 1984/1985 WHITESNAKE. Initially, the tour started with 6 members like the album, but as time went by, Mel Galley and Jon Lord dropped out. By the time it reached early summer, it was composed of four people. After that, while participating in Japan’s Super Rock ’84, he also took part in a harsh national tour as the undercard of DIO and QUIET RIOT. And, after the tour, “ROCK IN RIO” participated as a special performance. Two performances were performed in one collection, and this work is a live album that recorded the second performance. In addition, Cozy Powell, who had already broken up human relations at that time, had declared withdrawal, and he participated after knowing that it was the last stage.

It is known that such a show was left with a TV broadcast professional shot, but this work is a different FM sound board sound source. It is a complete version that also includes “Don’t Break My Heart Again” and “We Wish You Well” that were cut in the TV broadcast, and the sound transcends the TV broadcast. In particular, our press masterpiece “ROCK IN RIO ’85 (Langley-299)” has reigned as the best master. This work is the highest peak update board that “GRAF ZEPPELIN” rehoned the best master.

In fact, the sound is the highest ever. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering is not a flashy decoration of the original sound, but a method to improve the accuracy of pitch / phase adjustment and noise processing. Although there was no discomfort in the pitch and phase last time, it has been adjusted more strictly. It may be difficult to understand the difference because of that method, but this time I listened to it and made a different difference.

The easiest to understand is the bass punch, which makes the bass and bass drum much stronger. Although the conventional board was clear, the attack was weak, and the sound was blurry and loose. However, in this work, the attack with a sharp outline is beautifully missing and tight. In particular, the sharpness is very important because Cozy is described as “drumming like pulling a drum”. Don’t get me wrong, this is a different dimension from the innocent power earner. The adjustment is based on the concept of “recreating the sound output of the band”, and the band is adjusted from high to deep bass. As a result, the only difference that is easy to hear is the bass.

With such a powerful sound, the four strongest people, “Coverdale / Sykes / Powell / Murray”, cut the hoes. In addition to such a full show, this work also contains two more delicious bonus tracks, the first is “Stereo Mix Digest”. FM broadcasting was a fairly monaural sound board, but recently a vivid stereo sound source has also been unearthed. However, it is not the whole view of the show yet, but only the digest edited version of each song and summarized for about 9 minutes has been released. Here, it is recorded as a digest in anticipation of discovering the full version in the future.

The second is the music program “WHISTLE TEST”. Unlike the full main broadcast, it’s just an interview with “Love Ain’t No Stranger” and Coverdale, but this interview is surprisingly interesting. He also mentioned Cozy’s departure, and when the interviewer asked, “Is this the last concert for him?”, Coverdale replied, “I’m really sorry.” It’s normal to write it, but it’s intentionally overkill with a real voice, and it makes me want to wonder, “You don’t really think?” He was also asked, “I heard he’ll be the P of ELP,” and he said, “We’re going on different paths, but I wish him good luck.” It’s a white-hearted social decree, but here too, the nuances of the true intentions can be seen through the live voice.

《コージー・パウエル脱退》

これが1984年／1985年のWHITESNAKE。当初はアルバムと同じく６人編成でツアーを開始しましたが、時を経るごとにメル・ギャレイ、ジョン・ロードが脱落。初夏にいたる頃には４人編成となっていました。その後、日本のスーパーロック ’84へも参加しつつ、DIOやQUIET RIOTの前座として苛酷な全米ツアーにも臨んでいきました。そして、そんなツアー終了後に特別公演として参加したのが“ROCK IN RIO”。集１回で２公演が行われ、本作はその２公演目を記録したライヴアルバムです。また、当時はすでに人間関係の破綻していたコージー・パウエルが脱退を宣告しており、ラスト・ステージと分かった上での参加でもありました。

そんなショウは、TV放送プロショットが残された事でも知られますが、本作はそれとは異なるFMサウンドボード音源。TV放送ではカットされた「Don’t Break My Heart Again」「We Wish You Well」も収録した完全版で、サウンドもTV放送を超越。特に当店のプレス名盤『ROCK IN RIO ’85（Langley-299）』はベスト・マスターとして君臨してきました。本作は、そのベスト・マスターを「GRAF ZEPPELIN」が磨き直した最高峰更新盤なのです。

実際、そのサウンドは過去最高。「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングは原音をド派手に飾り立てるものではなく、あくまでピッチ／位相の調整やノイズ処理などの精度を高める手法。前回もピッチや位相に違和感はなかったものの、さらに厳密に整えられています。その手法ゆえに違いが分かりづらい事もあるのですが、今回は聴いて一発で異なる違いが生まれました。

一番分かりやすいのは低音のパンチで、ベースやバスドラがグッと力強くなっているのです。従来盤は鮮明ではあってもアタックが弱々しく、鳴りもボケで締まりのない音でした。しかし、本作では輪郭もキリッとしたアタックが綺麗にヌケ、ビシッと締まっている。特にコージーは「ドラム缶を引っぱたくようなドラミング」と形容されるだけに、キレの良さはかなり重要なのです。誤解のないように繰り返しますが、これは無闇な迫力稼ぎとは次元が違う話です。あくまでも「バンドの出音を再現する」というコンセプトに則った調整であり、高音から重低音まで帯域調整が施されている。その結果、耳に付きやすく違いが現れたのが低音というだけなのです。

そんなパワフル・サウンドで描かれるのは、最強の４人「カヴァデール／サイクス／パウエル／マーレイ」が鎬を削るフルショウ。現在、４人時代のライヴアルバムと言えば、公式作『LIVE IN ’84: BACK TO THE BONE』内の『SNAKESKIN BOOTS』が基準になりますので、ここで比較しながら内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式『SNAKESKIN BOOTS』はノークレジットなために断言できないものの、おおよそ“７月24日スポケイン公演”とも言われています。本作は、そこで聴けなかった３曲も楽しめる。特に「Don’t Break My Heart Again」は同日のTV放送でもカットされていた１曲なのです。

そんなフルショウだけでなく、本作はさらに美味しいボーナストラックも２種収録しています、まず１つめは「Stereo Mix Digest」。FM放送はかなりモノラル的なサウンドボードでしたが、最近になって鮮やかなステレオ音源も発掘されました。ただし、まだショウ全景ではなく、各曲をダイジェスト編集して約９分まとめたものしか公開されていない。ここでは、将来のフルバージョン発掘を期待してダイジェストのまま収録しています。

２つめは音楽番組”WHISTLE TEST”。フルの本放送とは違って「Love Ain’t No Stranger」とカヴァデールのインタビューだけですが、このインタビューが意外と面白い。コージーの脱退についても触れられ、インタビュアが「これが彼の最後のコンサートになってしまったんですね？」と質問するとカヴァデールが「本当に残念なんだけど」と答えている。文字にすると普通ですが、肉声ではわざとらしくオーバーで、思わず「本当は思ってないだろ？」とツッコミたくなる。さらに「ELPのPになってしまうそうですね」とも訊かれ、吹き出しながら「お互い、違う道を歩むことになったわけだけど、彼の幸運を祈るよ」と返す。思いっきり白々しい社交辞令なわけですが、ここでも生の音声だからこそ本音のニュアンスが透けてくるのです。

最強の布陣でありながら前座公演が多かった４人編成時代。“ROCK IN RIO”もフェスだけに単独フルセットとはいきませんが、それでも約１時間に渡って最強アンサンブルを楽しめる魅力は何物にも代えられません。本作は、その醍醐味を「GRAF ZEPPELIN」の高精細マスタリングでグイッと引き上げた１枚。どうぞ、永久保存プレスCDで存分にお楽しみください。
