A reprint series of the popular “Bernie Tapes” collection. A soundboard album that will be the final blow is now available! It will be released on a press CD that will permanently preserve the highest peak updated sound refined through meticulous mastering!!
What is engraved on this work is “November 7, 1978 Hanley Performance”. This is a stereo soundboard recording. In the first place, this “Bernie Tapes” series was digitized directly from the original cassettes that were treasured by the late Bernie Marsden himself. This is a hidden treasure that Bernie himself personally visited our store and provided to us.
At present, “Bernie Tapes” has been reprinted with “3 types of audience recordings + 2 types of soundboards” and has received a great response, but this work is also the final edition. All of these records are from the early days of the band’s formation, so let’s first check their relative positions.

This is WHITESNAKE in 1977/1978. At that time, the keyboard player was not stable, so they decided to give up on the original Brian Johnston, but soon left. Second hitter Pete Thorley was asked to help from the beginning on the condition that he would be OK as a fill-in, and Jon Lord finally joined the team as the third player. John participated in the overdub stage of “TROUBLE” and completed it the day after joining. We will be embarking on our first tour under the new system, “UK #2”. From this leg, the official version “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH” and the press masterpiece “BRIGHTON 1978 SOUNDBOARD (Zodiac 614)” of “Bernie Tapes” are also left, so let’s focus on the dates and check the positional relationship of each. Let’s leave it there.

…and it looks like this. Hanley’s performance of this work will be held 16 days before the official “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH”. It is a long soundboard album where you can enjoy almost the most recent full show. The reason why I say “almost” here is because there is a cut in the middle of “Mistreated”. This can’t be helped because the tape in Barney’s possession was like that (however, the cut part seems to be extremely short, and this work’s “Mistreated” is longer than the uncut “BRIGHTON 1978 SOUNDBOARD”).
Even more important is the sound. Although it has traditionally been a system directly connected to a top-of-the-line mix table, this work is a top-of-the-line updated version that has been brushed up with meticulous mastering just like the other “Bernie Tapes” collections. For those who have experienced the previous episodes, it is overwhelmingly clearer than “MUST BE THE GYPSY IN ME” and more dynamic than “STEAL THE NIGHT.” In particular, the power of the mid-bass has been significantly improved, and the balance that has been analyzed for each range has a beauty of symmetry. What’s more, the noise is also the lowest ever. This Barney tape has a noise like a poor contact in the left channel in “Trouble” and “Take Me with You”, but this is also thoroughly treated. Although it is impossible to completely solve the problem, it has been repaired as much as possible using 2023 technology.
The best sound ever is a live album that expands the official “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH” to full scale. The twins Barney, who loves Peter Green, and Mickey Moody, who adores Elmore James, embody the ideal of blues rock, and the singing bass of Neil Murray, who made Canterbury fans swell with the superband NATIONAL HEALTH, dances there. . And the drumming by Dave Dole, who was fired for being “too jazzy,” is also good. It may not be as powerful as Ian Paice, but depending on whether you see WHITESNAKE as “powerful blues rock” or “bluesy hard rock,” some people may prefer Dewl.
The “Bernie Tapes” collection revealed the truth about early WHITESNAKE with only official works. This is the final soundboard album. This is a piece that will directly feed into your brain the highest quality live performance from the time when Shiroja was a member of Dowl, which had the richest blues taste in the history of the White Snake. これが1977年／1978年のWHITESNAKE。当時はキーボーディストが安定せず、とりあえず初代ブライアン・ジョンストンで 見切り発車しつつもすぐに離脱。二打目ピート・ソーリーは最初から場つなぎならOKという条件で手伝ってもらい、３代目にしてようやくジョン・ロードの加入となるのです。ジョンは『TROUBLE』のオーバーダブ段階での参加で、加入翌日には完成。新体制での初ツアー「英国#2」に出発します。このレッグからは公式盤『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH』や同じく“Bernie Tapes”のプレス名盤『BRIGHTON 1978 SOUNDBOARD（Zodiac 614）』も残されていますので、さらに日程をフォーカスし、それぞれの位置関係をチェックしておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。本作のハンリー公演は、公式『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH』の16日前。直近のほぼフルショウを味わえる長尺サウンドボード・アルバムなのです。ここ「ほぼ」と付いてしまうのは「Mistreated」の中間部にカットがあるから。これはバーニー所蔵テープがそうなっていたので致し方ありません（ただ、カット部は極めて短いようで、本作の「Mistreated」はノーカットだった『BRIGHTON 1978 SOUNDBOARD』よりも長いくらいです）。
それ以上に重要ののはサウンド。従来から極上級のミックス卓直結系だったわけですが、本作は他の“Bernie Tapes”コレクションと同じように細心マスタリングでブラッシュ・アップされた最高峰更新盤なのです。既発を体験された方向けに表現するなら『”MUST BE THE GYPSY IN ME”』より圧倒的にクリアで、『STEAL THE NIGHT』よりもダイナミック。特に中低音の迫力が格段に向上しつつ、各音域ごとの分析を経たバランスは均整の美も備えています。さらに言えば、ノイズも過去最少。このバーニー・テープは「Trouble」や「Take Me with You」で左チャンネルに接触不良のようなノイズが入るのですが、これも徹底的にトリートメント。完全解決は不可能なタイプではありますが、2023年の技術で可能な限りの補修が施されています。
そんな過去最高サウンドで描かれるのは、公式『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH』をフルスケールに拡張したライヴアルバム。ピーター・グリーンをこよなく愛するバーニーとエルモア・ジェイムスに心酔するミッキー・ムーディのツインはブルースロックの理想を体現し、そこにスーパーバンドNATIONAL HEALTHでカンタベリーファンも唸らせたニール・マーレイの歌心ベースが舞う。そして「ジャズすぎる」という理由で解雇されてしまうデイヴ・ドウルのドラミングも良い。確かにイアン・ペイスほどのパワーはないかも知れませんが、WHITESNAKEを「パワフルなブルースロック」と見るか「ブルージーなハードロック」と見るかで、ドウルの方を好む方もいらっしゃる事でしょう。
