Starting with Bonnie Raitt’s “THE CHRISTIC INSTITUTE BENEFIT CONCERT 1990 DAY 2: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES” last week, the JEMS team’s Millard Master release released his recording that captured the stage of a female artist for five consecutive weeks. Speaking of Chapman, the first album bearing his own name was a big hit with a simple singing sound in 1988, the heyday of synth pop. It literally blew a cool breeze in an era when synths and programming were the norm.
The album became a darling of the era after receiving a big hit, and she became a member of the “HUMAN RIGHTS NOW” tour sponsored by Amnesty International, which was held in the latter half of 1988 with the participation of multiple artists.
This package tour was a hot topic as a tour that brought together stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Peter Gabriel at the time, but the participation of the black woman Tracy in this human rights tour Something that makes sense.
As Millard, he was probably aiming for Springsteen (his sound source has been released) and Peter Gabriel (master will be released in the future), but even he was in the limelight so much that he could not ignore it. It was Tracy.

In front of the big stars, the up-and-coming Tracy shows off her solo singing stage. Since it is an event tour, a large venue like the LA Memorial Coliseum is used on this day, but she does not hesitate to go through it on a simple stage. On the contrary, “Behind The Wall” showed me the confidence to sing a cappella.
The following year, the Grammy Award-winning “Fast Car” was also performed on the Coliseum stage, making it a nostalgic masterpiece. Her reliable thing to warm up the venue waiting for the star with a single acoustic guitar.
And for this mirrored sound source, the discovered First Generation Master may have had some problems. It is open to the public in a monaural state. However, this monaural sound quality is well addicted to Tracy’s singing stage.

チャップマンと言えばシンセポップ最盛期の1988年にシンプルな弾き語りサウンドを引っ提げ、自身の名前を冠したファースト・アルバムが大当たり。シンセや打ち込みが当たり前だった時代に文字通りの涼風を吹かせてくれたのでした。
そのアルバムは大ヒットを受けて一躍時代の寵児となった彼女は88年の後半に行われた複数アーティスト参加のアムネスティ主催による「HUMAN RIGHTS NOW」ツアーの一員に。
このパッケージ・ツアーはブルース・スプリングスティーンにスティング、そしてピーター・ガブリエルといった当時のスター達が一堂に会したツアーとして大きな話題を呼んだのですが、人権を掲げた本ツアーに黒人女性トレイシーの参加は理にかなったもの。
ミラードとしてはスプリングスティーン（彼の音源は公開済み）やピーター・ガブリエル（将来マスターが公開されるとのこと）目当てだったことでしょうが、そんな彼ですら無視できないほど脚光を浴びていたのが他ならぬトレイシーだったのです。

大スターたちの前に新進気鋭たるトレイシーはいかにも彼女らしくソロの弾き語りステージを披露。イベント・ツアーということからこの日はLAコロシアムのような大会場が使われていますが、そこでも臆することなく彼女はシンプルなステージで通します。それどころか「Behind The Wall」はアカペラで歌い通すほどの自信を見せつけてくれました。
翌年にはグラミー賞の栄誉に輝く「Fast Car」もコロシアムのステージでサラリと演奏してみせ、何より懐かしい名曲でしょう。アコギ一本でスターを待ちわびる会場を暖めてみせる彼女の頼もしいこと。
そして今回のミラード音源ですが、発見されたファースト・ジェネレーション・マスターは何かしらの不具合が生じていたのでしょう。モノラル化された状態で公開されています。ところがどっこい、このモノラル音質がトレイシーの弾き語りステージに上手くハマっている。
それでいてミラード録音らしく音像はあくまでオン。彼がトレイシー・チャップマンまで録音してくれていたとは本当に驚きですが、そのクオリティは今回も素晴らしい。むしろ上昇気流に乗った絶頂期の彼女のステージの記録として世界中から注目を浴びることでしょう。
