The first visit to Japan of the TOTO legend realized in 1980. A superb professional shot that choked on the sense of the times is now available.
This work contains the music program “Stereo Ongakukan” that was being broadcast on a commercial station at the time. This is the TOTO special feature. This program was aired on weekday evenings starting at 18:00 in 15-minute slots, and featured artists visiting Japan for one week (five days). This work is a compilation of five special features of TOTO’s first visit to Japan.
Of course, the main part of the program is live footage from their visit to Japan. It was a multi-camera pro shot of the “March 12, 1980: Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall” performance. At our shop, we have archived a number of masterpieces of the historic first visit to Japan, so let’s first take a look at the schedule at that time as well as organize the collection.

The video has been a staple as a professional shot that symbolizes the first visit to Japan since that time, and has been popular in our shop with gift titles such as “ALL US BOYS IN TOKYO 1980”. Although the gift board was a superb master, only the live scenes were excerpted and edited, but this work is a complete version of the broadcast that includes everything from the program intro to the studio talks that invited guests, and even the commercials that show the social conditions of the time. is.
In fact, the sense of the times in such scenes is wonderful. In the studio, folk singer Mr. Ko*to acted as the program personality, and his partner was the late Sarah Law*, who had just become popular in “11PM.” Re*ko Yukawa, who was still in her 40s, will appear as a guest and talk about TOTO. Of course, the program features the live scene as much as possible, so the talk itself is light, but even so, the talk, which includes the usual Toyo pottery and the Porcaro family lineage, is full of first-time visits to Japan. On the other hand, the commercials are provided exclusively by Pioneer, so although they are biased toward speakers and amplifiers, they advertise their nostalgic designs and mysterious functions as if they were great inventors. Also, Mr. Ogi Takanaka, who is playing the guitar comfortably in such a group of commercials, is a youthful person in his 20s when “JOLLY JIVE” was taking the world by storm, and finally Tom Petty’s first visit to Japan is announced. be done. Tom’s artist introduction telop uses a mysterious sub-genre called “simple rock”, a shabby bag commemorating his first visit, and the postal code of the application destination is three digits. Of course, the main highlight is the live pro shot. Since it is an extremely inconvenient broadcast frame of “15 minutes x 5 times”, it is not possible to expect a full show, but depending on the broadcast time, the talk will be omitted, and each song will be broadcast firmly. It broadcasts 9 songs in 5 minutes, and only “Mama”, “Tale Of A Man” and “White Sister” are covered with “LIVE IN TOKYO 1980”, which has been formalized in EP size in recent years. The Japanese translation of the lyrics attached to the four songs, Bobby Kimball in the “Ichiban” shirt and David Paich in the “Kotobuki” happi coat are also the real thrills of the video.

1980年に実現したTOTO伝説の初来日。その時代感にむせ返る極上プロショットが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは当時、某民放局で放送されていた音楽番組“ステレオ音楽館”。そのTOTO特集回です。この番組は平日の夕方18時から15分枠で帯放送されており、来日アーティストなどは１週間（５日間）で特集されていました。本作は、TOTO初来日の特集５回分をまとめたものなのです。
もちろん番組のメインは来日時のライヴ映像。「1980年３月12日：東京厚生年金会館」公演のマルチカメラ・プロショットでした。当店では歴史的な初来日を数々の名作でアーカイヴしておりますので、まずはそのコレクション整理も兼ねて当時のスケジュールを俯瞰してみましょう。

以上の全10公演。FM放送もありましたが、それは最終日の渋谷。TV放送されたのは、その前日にあたるコンサートでした。その映像は当時から初来日を象徴するプロショットして定番で、当店でもギフト・タイトル『ALL US BOYS IN TOKYO 1980』等で親しまれてきました。ギフト盤は極上マスターながらライヴシーンだけを抜粋編集されていましたが、本作は番組イントロからゲストを招いたスタジオ・トーク、さらには当時の世相が透けるCMに至るまで収録した放送の完全版なのです。
実際、そうしたシーンの時代感が素晴らしい。スタジオではフォークシンガーの小○等氏が番組パーソナリティを務め、パートナーは『11PM』で人気が出たばかりの故セーラ・ロウ○ル氏。ゲストにはまだ40代だった湯川れ○子氏も登場してTOTOについて語っていくのです。もっとも番組はライヴシーンを最大限にフィーチュアしているのでトーク自体は薄味ですが、それでもお約束な東洋陶器ネタやポーカロ家の血筋ネタも交えたトークは初来日らしさ満点です。一方のCMはパイオニア単独提供なのでスピーカーやアンプなどに偏っているものの、懐かしいデザインやナゾ機能をさも大発明家のように喧伝している。そもそもミニコンポが14万円だったり、ただのラジカセが７万円という値段設定もじわってくる。
また、そんなCM群で気持ち良さそうにギターを弾いている高中○義氏も『JOLLY JIVE』が一世を風靡していた20代の若々しさですし、最後にトム・ペティの初来日が告知される。そのトムのアーティスト紹介テロップに「シンプル・ロック」なる不思議なサブジャンルが使われていたり、初来の記念がショボいバッグだったり、はたまた応募先の郵便番号が３桁だったり……。隅々から時代感が滲み出すのです。
もちろん、肝心のライヴ・プロショットこそが最大の見どころ。「15分×５回」という極めて不自由な放送枠ですからフルショウなど望むべくもありませんが、放送回によってはトークを省略するほど尺を取って１曲１曲をしっかり放送。５回分で９曲を放送しており、近年になってEPサイズで公式化された『LIVE IN TOKYO 1980』と被るのも「Mama」「Tale Of A Man」「White Sister」だけ。４曲分に付せられた歌詞の日本語対訳や、「一番」シャツのボビー・キンボールや「寿」法被のデヴィッド・ペイチが見られるのも映像ならではの醍醐味です。

伝説の初来日を「光景」で語り継いできた大定番プロショット、その放送完全版です。若々しいTOTOの面々だけでなく、彼らの来訪に沸いていた日本の薫りまで吹き出してくる１枚。1980年の洋楽ブーム、どうぞ記録マニア秘蔵の超極上マスターで存分にご体験ください。
