The TOTO collection by the virtuoso “Stephane”, whose recently released “PARIS 1992 (Uxbridge 1964)” has been very well received. This time, a new recording of the historical singular point Jean-Michel Byron era is excavated.
“Performance in Paris on December 18, 1990” is imbued in this work. It is an excellent audience recording recorded at the local venue “Le Zenith”. Speaking of “Paris in the Byron Era”, the official video “LIVE (Recurrent DVD title is GREATEST HITS LIVE … AND MORE)” comes to mind, but this work is a different performance in the same year and at the same venue. In order to grasp the situation, let’s first take a bird’s eye view of the phantom Byron era on the schedule.

This is an overview of his activities during the Jean-Michel Byron era. The official video was shot at “Europe # 1” at the beginning of the tour, but this work will be “Europe # 2” about two months later. … and it looks like this. While the official “LIVE” was an incomplete recording, this work is a full recording. Moreover, the set on the day was different from the official October performance in the first place, and “Red House”, “Stop Loving You”, and “Girl Goodbye” were not even played.
By the way, the sound that conveys such a scene is truly a beautiful recording. I can’t mistake it for a sound board in terms of timbre, but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel the distance. The strength of the core offsets the sense of distance, and above all, you can enjoy the subtleties without losing the fine details. This is due to the skill of Mr. “Stephane”, but it is also great that it has been digitized directly from the original master. Not only are there no dubbing marks, but the deep bass and treble that tend to be spoiled are also beautifully preserved in every corner. In fact, the performance sound that is clear to the outline jumps straight into the hand like a laser beam, and it seems that each sound that is clear to the fine details is sparkling.
“Is Byron’s vocals particularly amazing?” Aside from whether it suits him or not, his soulful and dynamic singing is the biggest point of the “1990 PLANET EARTH Tour”. The sound of this work can taste both its subtleties and dynamism beautifully.

先日リリースの『PARIS 1992（Uxbridge 1964）』も大好評を賜っている名手「Stephane」氏によるTOTOコレクション。今回は歴史の特異点ジャン＝ミシェル・バイロン時代の新録音が発掘です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1990年12月18日パリ公演」。当地の名会場“Le Zenith”で記録された絶品オーディエンス録音です。「バイロン時代のパリ」と言えば、公式映像『LIVE（再発DVDタイトルはGREATEST HITS LIVE… AND MORE）』が思い浮かびますが、本作は同年・同会場ながら別セットの別公演。その状況を把握するためにも、まずは幻のバイロン時代をスケジュールで俯瞰してみましょう。

これがジャン＝ミシェル・バイロン時代の活動概要。公式映像はツアー序盤の「欧州#1」で撮影されましたが、本作は約２ヶ月後「欧州#2」。ツアーの全世界千秋楽となる最終公演でした。しかも、単に別公演というだけでなくセットも異なる。ここでその内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式『LIVE』が不完全収録だったのに対し、本作は一気貫通のフル録音。しかも、そもそも当日のセットからして公式の10月公演と異なっており、「Red House」「Stop Loving You」「Girl Goodbye」辺りは演奏すらしていませんでした。
さて、そんな現場を伝えるサウンドは、まさに絶品の美録音。音色的にサウンドボードと間違える事はないのですが、だからと言って遠さも感じない。芯の力強さが距離感を相殺しており、何より細やかなディテールが失われる事なく機微まで味わえるのです。これは名手「Stephane」氏の手腕に寄るところですが、さらに大元マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化されている点も大きい。ダビング痕がないだけでなく、スポイルされがちな重低音や高音の伸びも隅々まで綺麗に残っているのです。実際、輪郭までくっきりとした演奏音がレーザー光線のように真っ直ぐ手元に飛びこみ、細やかなディテールまで鮮明な１音１音がキラキラと降り注ぐようです。
特に凄いのはバイロンのヴォーカルでしょうか。似合う／似合わないはさておき、彼のソウルフルで豪快な歌い回しは“1990 PLANET EARTH Tour”最大のポイント。本作のサウンドはその機微もダイナミズムも美しく味わい尽くせるのです。
他のどの時代とも異なるジャン＝ミシェル・バイロン時代のTOTO。象徴である公式映像と同会場でありながらセットの異なる最終公演をフル体験できるライヴアルバムです。名手「Stephane」氏だからこその美音を胸いっぱいに吸い込める美しき新名盤。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
