This work is also the sound board for broadcasting, but it is the ultimate board with a different dimension than before. It is a CD made from the pre-FM broadcast master itself, making full use of the latest digital equipment. The recording time is longer than all the previous releases, and the show is completely recorded, but the sound itself is more than that. Since it is generated from the officially produced master, there is no dubbing deterioration, no reception noise, and even slight sound fluctuation. これが1990年のTEARS FOR FEARS。『THE SEEDS OF LOVE』をリリースしたのは1989年９月でしたが、ツアー開始は年が明けてから。途中オリータの『CIRCLE OF ONE』を挟みつつ、欧州／北米を中心にサーキットしました。公式『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』も本作も北米なものの時期は大きく異なり、本作は序盤となる「北米#1」の９公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウはラジオ放送された事でも知られ、そのエアチェックが無数の既発群を生み出す大定番となってきました。本作もまたその放送用サウンドボードなのですが、これまでとは次元の違う究極盤。プレFMの放送原盤そのものから最新デジタル機材を駆使してCD化したものなのです。これまでのあらゆる既発よりも収録時間が長くショウを完全収録しているわけですが、それ以上なのがサウンドそのもの。公式制作の原盤から起こしていますので、ダビング劣化はもちろんの事、受信ノイズもなければ僅かな音揺れさえも存在しない。トランスファーの確度も極めて高く、ヒスもスクラッチも一切ない。まさにマスターテープに吹き込まれた音がそのままスピーカーから流れ出る超極上のステレオ・サウンドボードなのです。
実際、本作はオフィシャル作品さえ超えている。前述の通り『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』があるわけですが、間違いなく本作の方が上。『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』とて問答無用の名作ですし、音声に欠点などない。しかし、本作と比較してしまうと鳴りの細やかさが今ひとつでアンサンブルに塊感が出てしまっている。それに対して本作は楽器１つひとつ、１ノート１ノートに至るまでヴァイヴの次元で繊細で、楽器群が重なり合っても混じり合わずに立体的な音空間を描き出している。ローランド・オーザバル＆カート・スミスにオリータ・アダムスを加えたヴォーカリゼイションは息づかいレベルですし、ギターもシンセもタッチから消えゆく鳴りのニュアンスまで鮮明。それが１つひとつ絹糸のようにキラめきながら、決して混じり合わずにタペストリーを編み上げていくのです。

The main press 2CD is a superb stereo sound board album that boasts a value equal to or higher than the studio masterpieces. It is a super masterpiece that should be called the masterpiece of TEARS FOR FEARS. As I mentioned in the commentary, when it comes to the “SEEDS OF LOVE TOUR” of the century, the official masterpiece video “GOING TO CALIFORNIA” has reigned as a symbol. Therefore, a special bonus will be attached so that you can collect the supreme version of the live album and the video work at once.
That’s why this work is a DVD that is a delicate digitization of the masterpiece “GOING TO CALIFORNIA”. This is a multi-camera pro shot of “May 26, 1990 Santa Barbara Performance”, which is the 10th performance of “North America # 2” in the schedule of the main story.
Although this video was released worldwide on VHS / Laserdisc, it was soon discontinued due to the fate of the video work at that time. Even after that, the official DVD has not been realized. As a matter of fact, DVD / CD was released as a half official board called “LIVE FROM SANTA BARBARA” in 2009, but there are 5 songs “Women Of Ireland” “Change” “Pale Shelter” “Mad World”. It was an excerpt of about 68 minutes that “All You Need Is Love” was cut (I guess, it was cut to fit on CD1 and the same edited video version was also sold on DVD). Of course, this work is not a copy of such an excerpt, but a complete version reprinted from the original “GOING TO CALIFORNIA”.
Since the original is an official product, the visual beauty is of course superb, and the sound is also a completely official grade sound board (although it is less than the main press 2CD). On top of that, the work-like creation is also wonderful. While focusing on the two protagonists, the highlights of the luxurious lineup of 10 people in total are held down one by one, and each cut is so drawn that it can be used for gravure. What’s more, it’s not just a projection, but a lot of video production, with scanning line images that imitate monochrome, sepia, and CRT, and even image cuts are inserted depending on the song. Of course, 1990 has already passed the MTV era, so such processing is not annoying and is backed by a solid aesthetic sense. It’s a perfection like a PV of a full show, and it’s an art masterpiece that can be called a “video work”.
“GOING TO CALIFORNIA” is not only the “other side” of the main press 2CD, but also the best video work of TEARS FOR FEARS. This is a reprint of the phantom official video that has not yet been made into a DVD in all songs. A supreme set of live albums and professional shots produced by “SEEDS OF LOVE TOUR”. この映像はVHS／レーザーディスクで世界リリースされたものの、当時の映像作の宿命で間もなく廃盤。その後も公式DVD化は実現していません。実のところ、2009年には『LIVE FROM SANTA BARBARA』なるハーフオフィシャル盤としてDVD/CDがリリースされもしましたが、ちららは５曲「Women Of Ireland」「Change」「Pale Shelter」「Mad World」「All You Need Is Love」がカットされた約68分の抜粋版でした（あくまで推測ですが、CD１に収めるためにカットされ、同じ編集の映像版がDVDでも売られていたようです）。もちろん、本作はそんな抜粋版のコピーではなく、オリジナルの『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』から復刻された完全版です。
元が公式品ですから当然のことながら映像美は超極上で、サウンドも（本編プレス２CDには一歩及ばないものの）完全オフィシャル級サウンドボード。その上で作品然とした作り込みも素晴らしい。主役の２人を中心にしつつも合計10人に及ぶ豪華ラインナップの見どころを逐一押さえ、その１カット１カットがグラビアに使えそうなほど画になっている。しかも、単に映しているのではなく映像演出もたっぷりで、モノクロやセピア、ブラウン管を模した走査線映像を施したり、曲によってはイメージカットまで挿入。もちろん1990年はすでにMTV時代も通過していますから、そうした処理が目障りになる事はなく、確かな美的センスに裏打ちされている。もはやフルショウをPV化したような完成度であり、まさに「映像作品」と呼ぶに相応しいアートな大傑作なのです。
