The Rolling Stones’ 1981 US tour seems to have unearthed the soundboards of most of the performances, but there are certainly days when they haven’t been unearthed yet.
The typical example is the second day of the LA Sports Arena. Unlike the first day when PA-out soundboards existed, no soundboards have been excavated on this day yet. Instead, stereo audience recording has always conveyed the pattern of the day.
The sound quality is quite squeaky, and it is a sound source that should be added to the category of rough recording, but it matches well with the wild performance of the day, and it is preferred by enthusiasts as it is. It is said that it was also a sound source.
To tell the story, this sound source was released on the VGP label more than 20 years ago under the title of “NEVER TOO OLD TO ROCK & ROLL” (hereinafter referred to as “already released”).
A first generation copy of the same sound source has recently appeared on the net. However, in addition to the recording state where basic distortion occurs everywhere, the opening “Under My Thumb” fades in, and the intro of “Beast Of Burden” and “Satisfaction” starts to cut off a little, etc. .. Compared to that, the point that the texture is a little relaxed is this version.
On the flip side, it is presumed that the already-released version used a fairly low-generation version in the era of cassette trading.
What’s even more puzzling is that “Street Fighting Man,” which wasn’t played that day in this version, has been inserted from the soundboard on the first day of LA to the end of the live. This was extra care.
Because of that, this time it will be released as a free gift, but it is rather noteworthy that the last two songs of the first CD, “Waiting On A Friend” and “Waiting On A Friend” The extreme pitch rise that occurred in “Let It Bleed” has been adjusted exactly this time, and it may be easier to hear.
And what stands out throughout is the extremely wild performance of Stones centered on Mick. Compared to the official releases recorded after the middle of the tour such as the movie “LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER” in Hampton, it looks like a different band.
In particular, Mick is extremely high-tensioned, and the song is so sharp that the expression of screaming fits perfectly. In addition to that, at the end of the live, there is a surprise that Bobby Keys will participate after “Brown Sugar” following the first day of LA.
And the already released version is now released more than 20 years ago, and there are many enthusiasts who have never heard of the too wild Stones of the day. It is an audience album captured with a texture that further impresses the hyper performance unique to the beginning of the 1981 tour (it is distorted at the end of the live, but the power is also tremendous).
