“EAST RUTHERFORD 1981 1ST NIGHT” is a multitrack recording rough mix of the 1981 US tour released nearly 10 years ago, and I think there are many enthusiasts who have been waiting for the re-appearance of the day. From this day, the movie “LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER” was recorded, and it was also adopted for the live album “STILL LIFE” and radio broadcasting.
And after all, “Down The Road A piece”, which was one of the biggest rare repertoires in the 1981 tour, has revived since the beginning of the tour. It was also the day when a monaural PA-out sound board was unearthed and delighted enthusiasts, but as I mentioned at the beginning, the multitrack recording of rough mix for radio broadcasting is of a quality that slightly exceeds that and is clear. Moreover, the appeal of being heard on an official level stereo was too great.
However, when this sound source was distributed on the “CONCERT VAULT” site, even if the song started on “Under My Thumb”, “Hang Fire” was covered from beginning to end in the latter half of “A train”. Was covered with the sound of the normal version of “TATTOO YOU”, which seems to be a trouble when creating a rough mix, that “Slave” sounds. They were mixed up to the beginning of “When The Whip Comes Down,” which frustrated maniacs with “I was having trouble on the day I wanted to hear the most …”. Fortunately, however, the fact that the part containing these problems can be covered by “STILL LIFE”.
This editing solved a big problem, but to complicate matters, the vocals were replaced in a part of the previous “Under My Thumb” in “STILL LIFE”, so the value of the rough mix itself was left behind. .. Therefore, the original distribution and the well-thought-out content that included Mick’s genuine vocal “Under My” as a bonus for each PA out sound source became even more popular.
In this way, “EAST RUTHERFORD 1981 1ST NIGHT” was very complete from the release at that time, so there was nothing to make major changes to this re-release. Again, even with Graf Zeppelin, who was in charge of the overhaul, I only made fine adjustments.
Also, by making the beginning a version of “STILL LIFE”, there was also the merit that the difference between the completed mixing and the rough mix could be easily heard and compared. It is a translation from “When The Whip Comes Down” to a rough mix, but while the previous song was in a state where everything was adjusted as a finished product called a live album, the texture of the performance is vivid from this song. Moreover, the difference that the balance is literally rough is transmitted in a very easy-to-understand manner. For this song, the backing chorus sung by Ian McLagan on the keyboard is very well balanced.
Also, at the beginning of “Miss You”, the scene where Mick’s rhythm guitar starts to sound stupid (and the volume goes down in a hurry) is also interesting, which is also unique to rough mix.
And the performance of Stones was very hot on this day. Great performances pop out everywhere, like going on the ground with Stones’ law that the voltage goes up when the recording comes in. Mick tells us a powerful singing, and the band also reaches the first peak with “Just My Imagination”. I think it was the best time to continue playing “Down The Road A piece” after a long time. Compared to the same song at the beginning of the tour in the popular “BUFFALO 1981”, it’s like a different band (laughs).
It’s funny to see Mick’s power too much and he makes a mistake in “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, and in “Honky Tonk Women” Tina Turner jumps in and tells Mick and the duet. It is also an attractive scene to be able to do it.
And Charlie’s drums are hot in “Jumping Jack Flash” and “Satisfaction”! Moreover, nowadays, the meaning of each hit he hits deeply resonates here. And the point is that you can listen to these scenes with peace of mind thanks to the wonderful sound quality. After all, when it comes to recording, Stones will be enthusiastic. The first day of East Rutherford, which was such a famous performance and was especially popular among the 1981 multi-track rough mixes, is literally the long-awaited re-appearance!

「EAST RUTHERFORD 1981 1ST NIGHT」は今から10年近く前にリリースされた1981年アメリカ・ツアーのマルチトラック録音ラフミックスの中でも、この日の再登場を待ち焦がれていたマニアは多いのではないでしょうか。この日から映画「LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER」の収録が入り、なおかつライブアルバム「STILL LIFE」とラジオ放送にも採用されたという日でもありました。
そして何と言っても81年ツアーにおける最大のレア・レパートリーの一つであった「Down The Road Apiece」がツアー序盤以来の復活を遂げたということ。まずモノラルのPAアウト・サウンドボードが発掘されてマニアを大喜びさせた日でもありましたが、最初に触れたようにラジオ放送用ラフミックスのマルチトラック録音はそれをも軽く上回るクオリティであり、クリアーかつオフィシャル・レベルのステレオで聞かれるという魅力があまりにも大きかった。
ところが「CONCERT VAULT」サイトにて本音源が配信された際には「Under My Thumb」において曲が始まっても「A列車」の後半部に「Hang Fire」が終始被っており、挙句の果てには「Slave」が鳴るという、ラフミックス作成時のトラブルと思しき「TATTOO YOU」通常バージョンの音が被さっていたのです。それらが「When The Whip Comes Down」の序盤まで混ざってしまっており、マニアを「よりによって一番聞きたい日にトラブルが起きていたとは…」と苛立たせてしまったものでした。ところが幸いなことに、これらの問題を含んだパートは「STILL LIFE」でカバー出来てしまうという事実が。
この編集によって大きな問題が解決できた訳ですが、ややこしいことに「STILL LIFE」では先の「Under My Thumb」の一部でボーカルを差し替えていたことから、ラフミックス本体の価値も残されていた。そこで配信のオリジナル、さらにPAアウト音源それぞれのミック純正ボーカル「Under My～」をボーナスとして収めた行き届いた内容がさらに高い人気を呼ぶことになったものでした。
こうして当時のリリースからして完成度が非常に高かった「EAST RUTHERFORD 1981 1ST NIGHT」ですので、今回の再リリースに際しても、大幅に手を加えるところはありませんでした。今回もまたオーバーホールを担当してくれたGraf Zeppelinを持ってしても微調整にとどまりました。
また冒頭を「STILL LIFE」のバージョンとしたことで、完成されたミキシングとラフミックスの違いが簡単に聞き比べられるようになったというメリットも生まれました。「When The Whip Comes Down」からラフミックスへと切り替わる訳ですが、前の曲がライブアルバムという完成品としてすべてが調整された状態だったのに対し、この曲からは演奏の質感が生々しく、なおかつバランスが文字通りラフな状態という違いがとても分かりやすく伝わってくるのです。この曲に関してはキーボードのイアン・マクレガンが歌っていたバックコーラスのバランスがやたらと大きい。
また「Miss You」冒頭ではミックの弾いたリズムギターがバカでかい音で鳴りだす（そして慌てて音量が下がる）場面も面白く、これまたラフミックスならでは。
そしてこの日はストーンズの演奏が非常にアツい。収録が入るとボルテージが上がるというストーンズの法則を地で行くような素晴らしい演奏が随所で飛び出す。ミックは力の入った熱唱を聞かせてくれ、さらにバンドも「Just My Imagination」で最初の頂点を迎えてくれる。続けて「Down The Road Apiece」が久々に演奏されるというのは最高のタイミングだったのではないでしょうか。大好評発売中の「BUFFALO 1981」におけるツアー序盤の同曲と聞き比べると、まるで別のバンド（笑）。
ミックの力が入り過ぎて「You Can’t Always Get What You Want」で彼が構成を間違えてしまう場面は微笑ましいですし、「Honky Tonk Women」ではティナ・ターナーが飛び入りしてミックとデュエットを聞かせてくれるのも魅力的な場面。
そして「Jumping Jack Flash」と「Satisfaction」ではチャーリーのドラムがアツい！しかも今となってはここで彼の叩き出た一打一打の意味が深く響いてしまう。そしてこうした場面が素晴らしい音質のおかげで安心して聞き込めてしまうというのもポイントが高い。やはり収録となれば張り切るストーンズ。そんな名演かつ81年マルチトラック・ラフミックスの中でも特に人気の高かったイースト・ラザフォード初日が文字通り待望の再登場です！
