“DESERT TRIP” is a gorgeous artist gathering festival that has already passed five years. After all, it ended up being held once in 2016, but the performance that took place there has not faded yet. The setlists, which all artists had different tastes in the first and second weeks, became a hot topic, but the Rolling Stones was the one that attracted a lot of attention. Especially in the first week, the cover of “Come Together” by The Beatles made enthusiasts all over the world surprise. Since it’s 2016, it’s nostalgic that “DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1”, which is a coupling of great quality audience recordings, was very popular in the rear tie.
Under such circumstances, there is an IEM sound source, an unpleasant sound source, and the masterpiece “DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1: FRONT OF HOUSE MIX” has been released for the stage of Roger Waters. However, there is actually an unpleasant sound source on the Stones stage, and it was quietly released in 2018 with the title “GOT TO BE A JOKER”.
However, what was not straightforward was that the title was released only on analog records. It can be said that the distribution route was similar to that of “CALIFORNIA SOUNDBOARD” on the Pink Floyd 1975 tour. In addition, it was a fact that it didn’t get much attention because it was released two years after the event. It’s been four years since then, and the original earphone sound source still doesn’t appear, so it’s possible that Taper himself, who recorded it, made this LP. In addition, due to the limitation of recording time of one record, it was not possible to completely record the stage of the day, and what was asked there was “Honky Tonk Women”.

However, the state of the earmoni recording is quite excellent, and only the opening “Start Me Up” has a larger balance of bass and keyboard than the guitar, which is a balance that is common in this kind of recording, but fortunately “You Got” From “Me Rocking”, Keith and Ronnie have evolved into a balance like Stones that makes a loud noise. This is an excellent sound source that you can enjoy as a stereo soundboard recording. In that case, it would be a waste to bury the precious earmoni recordings that can only be heard on LPs, which were rarely available in Japan. A press CD release will be realized from the LP with the utmost care.
It is regrettable that the recording was incomplete as mentioned earlier, but it is still a high point to hear the performance that was the highlight of the day with excellent sound quality. First of all, “Mixed Emotions” is the revival of the live repertoire after a long absence. Keith and Ronnie’s guitar is a must-have song, so it’s exceptional to enjoy it with this stunning stereo separation. Furthermore, Charlie’s unique drumming. It’s been a long time since I played it, so it’s hard to ask for the sharpness of 1989, but it’s not bad to listen to it with a clear sound source.
The Beatles’ “Come Together” became a bigger topic than that. The performer had a Stones-like atmosphere, but Mick had some mistakes in the lyrics, partly because he sang while watching the prompter, and there was no part that could be sung correctly throughout (bitter smile). .. I could enjoy the dangerous song clearly.
As mentioned at the beginning, it is a recording up to “Honky Tonk Women”. However, if all the remaining parts are supplemented with Aud, 60% of the two-disc set will be occupied by it, resulting in a half-finished composition. It was gracefully put together into a single piece with the earphones as the main sound source, and only the latter half of the live was supplemented with Aud from the “Scooter 123” source of “DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1”. As was talked about at the time, the sound quality of this audience recording was good, and if it was sounding from the speakers, I wouldn’t feel the discomfort of switching from earphones to Aud.
And finally, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” at the 2020 stay home event, which was the last official performance of Charlie’s life as a bonus, is recorded. Since it was a remote performance, it’s sad that Charlie was doing it while smiling at the air drum. Of course, this is also a sound board, so it can be said that the rare live sound sources of Stones have been put together in one piece in recent years. Nowadays, the hidden precious sound source that you can enjoy “Mixed Emotions” and “Come Together” at the 2016 event that you can even remember nostalgia like a stereo sound board is on CD for the first time!

早くも五年の歳月が経過した豪華アーティスト集結フェスティバル「DESERT TRIP」。結局2016年一回の開催で終わってしまいましたが、そこで繰り広げられたパフォーマンスは未だに色褪せていない。どのアーティストも一週目と二週目でそれぞれに趣向を変えたセットリストが話題となったのですが、そんな中でも大きな話題を呼んだのがローリング・ストーンズ。特に一週目ではビートルズの「Come Together」をカバーしてみせたことが世界中のマニアをアッと言わせたものでした。2016年ですのでリアタイでも素晴らしいクオリティのオーディエンス録音が出回り、それらをカップリングした「DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1」が大人気を博していたのも今となっては懐かしい。
そうした中でIEM音源ことイヤモニ音源が存在し、ロジャー・ウォーターズのステージに関しては名盤「DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1: FRONT OF HOUSE MIX」がリリースされています。ところがストーンズのステージに関しても実はイヤモニ音源が存在しており、それが2018年になって「GOT TO BE A JOKER」というタイトルでひっそりとリリースされていました。
ところが一筋縄でいかなかったのは、同タイトルがアナログレコードだけでリリースされたということ。ちょうどピンク・フロイド1975年ツアーの「CALIFORNIA SOUNDBOARD」と似たような流通経路を辿ったと言えるでしょう。おまけにイベントから二年後のリリースだったということで思いのほか注目を浴びなかったのも事実。あれから四年が経った今なお元のイヤモニ音源が現れないことから推測するに、それを録音したテーパー自身がこのLPを作ったのかもしれません。おまけにレコード一枚という時間という収録時間の制約もあり、当日のステージを完全収録するには至っておらず、そこで聞かれたのは「Honky Tonk Women」までというもの。
とはいえイヤモニ録音の状態はなかなかに素晴らしく、冒頭「Start Me Up」だけはギターよりベースやキーボードのバランスが大きいという、この手の録音にありがちなバランスなのですが、幸いなことに「You Got Me Rocking」からはキースとロニーもグッと大きく鳴るストーンズらしいバランスへと進化。これはもう普通にステレオサウンドボード録音として楽しめてしまう優良音源。となれば日本でもほとんど出回らなかったLPでしか聞けない貴重イヤモニ録音を埋もれさせておくにはもったいない。そのLPから細心の注意を払ってのプレスCDリリースが実現いたします。
先に触れたような不完全収録である点は惜しまれるのですが、それでもこの日の目玉となった演奏が素晴らしい音質で聞けるのはポイントが高い。まず久しぶりのライブレパートリー復活となった「Mixed Emotions」。キースとロニーのギターが要な曲ですので、それをこの見事なステレオ・セパレーションで楽しめるのは格別。さらにはチャーリーの唯一無比なドラミング。本当に久しぶりの演奏ですので、さすがに1989年当時の切れ味を求めるのは酷というものですが、こうしてクリアーな音源で聞いてみると悪くない。
それ以上に大きな話題となったのがビートルズの「Come Together」。演奏の方はストーンズらしい雰囲気を漂わせていたものの、ミックの方はプロンプターを見ながら歌ったせいもあって歌詞をどこかしら間違えており、全体を通して正しく歌い切れたパートがなかったという（苦笑）。その危うい歌いっぷりもクリアーに楽しめてしまうのでした。
最初に触れたように「Honky Tonk Women」までの収録です。かといって残りのパートをすべてAudで補うと二枚組の内、六割がそれで占められてしまう中途半端な構成となってしまう。そこは潔くイヤモニ音源をメインとした一枚ものにまとめ、さらにライブ後半部分だけを「DESERT TRIP 2016 WEEKEND 1」の「Scooter123」ソースによるAudで補いました。当時話題になったように、このオーディエンス録音の音質が良く、スピーカーから鳴らしている分だとイヤモニからAudに切り替わった違和感を覚えないのでは。
そして最後にはボーナスを兼ねてチャーリー存命時最後の公式パフォーマンスとなってしまった2020年のステイホーム・イベントでの「You Can’t Always Get What You Want」を収録。リモート・パフォーマンスだったことからチャーリーがエアードラムをやけにニコニコしながらやっていたのが今となっては切ない。当然これもサウンドボードですので、近年ストーンズのレア・ライブ音源が一枚にまとめられた内容だとも言えるでしょう。今となっては懐かしさすら覚える2016年イベントでの「Mixed Emotions」と「Come Together」をステレオサウンドボード感覚で楽しめる隠れた貴重音源が初CD化！
★「Got To Be A Joker」は LPオンリーで、日本には入って来ませんでした。今回、レコード落としでの初CD化。素晴らしいイヤモニ録音で、普通にStereo SBDに聞こえます。
