Ricky Lee Jones in 2000, when his cover album “IT’S LIKE THIS” for the first time in nine years was nominated for a Grammy Award, was suddenly gaining attention. A sound board album that pours the live song into his brain is now available.
This work was recorded on “September 24, 2000 Santa Cruz Performance”. It is the stereo sound board recording. Normally, I would check the show position on the tour schedule, but there were few records at that time and it was too incomplete. The reality is that the scale of the activity is not clear. However, the album “IT’S LIKE THIS” will be released on “September 12”, and the Santa Cruz performance of this work will be 12 days later. I think it was early in the tour. Also, speaking of the early 2000s, the Great Big Island series was released one after another, but among them, “LIVE IN PORTLAND” and “LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA” are close to this work. In particular, it was also the most recent stage, eight days after “LIVE IN PORTLAND”.
This work, which was recorded at such a show, was released very recently and is a hot topic for the new master. Directly from the mini disc recorded at that time, the sound is directly connected to the mixing desk. You can see that there is a big applause between songs, but it sounds farther than the close performance sound and singing voice. I don’t know if there was a broadcast or not, but in terms of sound balance, it’s a type that tends to be found in live studios and live performances.
Also, this type tends to be rough in a power rock ensemble, but there is no such worry in this work. While interweaving acoustic and electric, the soft and simple backing creates a vivid and private feeling. Moreover, there is no difficulty in hearing at all, and Ricky’s voice stands out clearly, and it even emits a sense of intimacy as if he were sitting in the rehearsal room.
A fun and colorful full show full of valuable cover songs is depicted on such a private soundboard. As mentioned above, the 2000 live is also left in “LIVE IN PORTLAND” and “LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA”, so let’s organize the set while comparing here.

Especially valuable is the “IT’S LIKE THIS” number, but since it is a cover album, the goodness of the song is guaranteed. You can enjoy plenty of Ricky singing more colorful melodies as well as freshness that is different from usual.
This is a superb soundboard album where you can enjoy the delicious repertoire of the “IT’S LIKE THIS” era like a whisper in your ear. That is a masterpiece that I would like you to line up with the studio album as “IT’S LIKE THIS live edition”. Please enjoy the raw voice of Ricky, who was in his 40s and had a lot of fat as a singer, with this work.

９年ぶりのカバー・アルバム『IT’S LIKE THIS』がグラミー賞にノミネートされるなど、にわかに注目が高まっていた2000年のリッキー・リー・ジョーンズ。その生歌を脳みそに流し込んでくれるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「2000年９月24日サンタクルーズ公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。普段ならツアー・スケジュールでショウのポジションを確認するところですが、当時の記録が少なく、あまりにも不完全。活動規模も判然としないのが実情です。ただ、アルバム『IT’S LIKE THIS』が“９月12日”発売で、本作のサンタクルーズ公演はその12日後。かなりツアー初期だったと思われます。また、2000年代初頭と言えば、Great Big Islandシリーズも次々とリリースされていましたが、その中で本作に近いのは『LIVE IN PORTLAND』と『LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA』。特に『LIVE IN PORTLAND』の８日後という直近のステージでもありました。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、ごく最近公開され、話題を呼んでいる新マスター。当時録音されたミニディスクから直接起こされており、そのサウンドは超リアルなミックス卓直結系。曲間になると盛大な喝采が沸くのも分かるのですが、それがド密着な演奏音や歌声より遙か彼方に聞こえる。放送があったのかどうかは分からないのですが、サウンド・バランス的には、生出演のスタジオ・ライヴなどにありがちなタイプです。
また、こういうタイプはパワー系のロック・アンサンブルだとラフになりがちですが、本作にその心配はなし。アコースティック／エレクトリックを織り交ぜつつ、柔らかくシンプルなバッキングは生々しさがプライベート感覚を演出。しかも聞きづらさはまったくなく、リッキーの肉声がくっきりと浮き立たせており、それこそリハーサル・ルームに同席しているかのような親密感さえ発散しているのです。
そんなプライベート感覚サウンドボードで画かれるのは、貴重なカバー曲も満載で楽しくカラフルなフルショウ。前述のように、2000年のライヴは『LIVE IN PORTLAND』『LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA』にも残されていますので、ここでは比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。
