Robin “THE KING” Crosby who founded RATT with Stephen Pearcy and reigned in the rock world as the core of LA metal. The best video that contains his last show is the gift release decision.
Included in this work is the performance of “February 16, 1991: Osaka Festival Hall”. RATT, which was popular in Japan right after its debut, realized 5 Japan tours with 5 albums from the Golden Age. “DETONATOR JAPAN TOUR 1991”, which contains this work, is the 5th time. Let’s take a look at the tour dates at that time.

Above, all 7 performances. Most of them were in Kanto, but the Osaka Festival Hall performance was the only Kansai and final performance. And Robin withdrew from RATT at the end of this performance in Japan. I also toured with Michael Schenker as a substitute, but I just followed the path to dissolution. Meanwhile, Robin, who left, had a sadder fate. He formed his own band, CALL OF THE WILD, but did not get on track and developed AIDS in the meantime. He will be the one who will never return in 2002. In other words, this Osaka performance is not just the final performance of the Japan Tour, but the last concert of the Golden Age RATT and the last brave figure of Robin’s life. It is exactly the “last brilliance” m that blinked in the moment when the times are about to change.
I talked about the preciousness of this work, but the quality of this work blows away such preciousness. It’s a top-down shot from the seats on the 2nd floor in front of the stage, but even on the 2nd floor, the arms and head in the front row are not reflected at all. It is a superb angle that literally occupies the screen with “RATT only”. Furthermore, the master freshness is also excellent, and there is no white line noise or tape deterioration, let alone color bleeding. You can fully enjoy the vivid visual beauty of the colors as they were at that time.
Moreover, the photographer has a great deal of skill, and each member’s highlights are zoomed one by one while maintaining an outstanding angle and a sense of stability. When it comes to the bold zoom, the image quality is even clearer, and everything from the wrinkles in Robin’s gorgeous costume to the tattoo on Steven’s shoulder is clearly projected. The sound that does not give up half a step to the beauty of the image is also the best, and it reaches straight to the bone. The clearness is clear from Warren DeMartini’s feats to picking nuances.
Robin’s last brilliance drawn with that quality truly symbolizes an era. The new work and the masterpiece “OUT OF THE CELLAR” occupy the main axis only for the tour of the album “DETONATOR”, but in addition to all the works from the debut EP “RATT” to the previous work “REACH FOR THE SKY”, “Korezo” A large collection of famous songs! It’s not as comprehensively balanced as the later reunion, but that’s why the real-time feeling of the golden age oozes. And, even after playing, there was no consciousness of “Let’s enjoy those days” or “the shape that fans want”, and the pride of the active duty who ran at the forefront was fully opened. While making you feel every corner of the golden age, a live with zero nostalgia is unfolded to fill the screen.

The last brave figure of “THE KING” Robin, which is unique. At that time, LA metal was already in the sunshine, and street rock realism was more important than glitz. Those who are reflected in this work are also solidified in rough styles such as T-shirts and jeans. Robin was the only one who continued to give fans a gorgeous “dream” without letting go of shining accessories. The appearance is firmly recorded in this work as well. It’s such a sentimental and superb rock video work, but Robin’s appearance still touches my heart. It is exactly “the last brilliance”. This one-word masterpiece video. This weekend, I’ll give it to you who burned your heart at that time.

スティーヴン・パーシーと共にRATTを創始し、LAメタルの中核としてロック界に君臨したロビン・“THE KING”・クロスビー。その彼のラストショウを収めた極上映像がギフトリリース決定です。
本作に収められているのは「1991年２月16日：大阪フェスティバルホール」公演。デビュー直後から日本で人気の高かったRATTは、黄金時代のアルバム５枚で５回のジャパンツアーが実現。本作が収められた“DETONATOR JAPAN TOUR 1991”は、その５回目にあたります。ここで、当時のツアー日程を見てみましょう。

以上、全７公演。そのほとんどは関東ばかりでしたが、大阪フェスティバルホール公演は唯一の関西にして最終公演でした。そして、この日本公演を最後にRATTからロビンが脱退。代役にマイケル・シェンカーを迎えてツアーを行ったりもしましたが、そのまま解散への道を辿ってしまいました。一方、脱退したロビンはもっと悲しい運命が待っていた。彼自身のバンドCALL OF THE WILDを結成したものの軌道に乗らず、そうこうするうちにエイズを発症。2002年には帰らぬ人となるのです。つまり、この大阪公演は単なるジャパンツアーの最終公演ではなく、黄金期RATTのラストコンサートであり、ロビン生前最後の勇姿でもある。まさに、時代が変わろうとする刹那に瞬いた“最後の輝き”ｍなのです。
つらつらと貴重ぶりをお話ししましたが、本作のクオリティはそんな貴重度を吹っ飛ばすもの。ステージ正面２階席からの見下ろしショットなのですが、２階でも最前列なのか前列の腕も頭も一切映り込まない。文字通り“RATTだけ”で画面が占領される絶品アングルです。さらにマスター鮮度も素晴らしく、色滲みどころか白線ノイズやテープ劣化の類も一切なし。当時そのままの発色も鮮やかな映像美がたっぷりと味わえるのです。
しかも、撮影者が相当な手練れでして、抜群アングル＆安定感のまま、各メンバーの見どころを逐一ズームしまくる。その果敢なズームになると一層ハッキリするのが画質でして、ロビンの煌びやかな衣装のシワからスティーヴンの肩のタトゥーにいたるまでクッキリに映し出される。その映像美に半歩も譲らぬ音声も極上で、真っ直ぐ骨太に届く。そのクリアぶりは、ウォーレン・デ・マルティーニの妙技もピッキングニュアンスまで克明です。
そのクオリティで描かれるロビン最後の輝きは、まさに一時代を象徴するもの。アルバム『DETONATOR』のツアーだけに新作と大代表作『OUT OF THE CELLAR』が主軸を占めていますが、他にもデビューEP『RATT』から前作『REACH FOR THE SKY』までの全作品から「コレぞ！」な名曲群が大集合。後の再結成ほどの総括バランスではありませんが、だからこその黄金期のリアルタイム感も滲む。そして、演奏ぶりにも“あの頃を楽しもう”や“ファンが望むカタチ”の意識がなく、最前線を突っ走ってきた現役のプライドが全開。黄金期の隅々までを感じさせつつ、それでいてノスタルジー感ゼロのライヴが画面いっぱいに繰り広げられるのです。

２つとない“THE KING”ロビン最後の勇姿。当時はすでにLAメタルは斜陽であり、華やかさよりもストリート・ロックのリアリズムが重用される時代でした。本作に映し出される彼らも、Tシャツやジーンズなど、ラフなスタイルで身を固めている。そんな中で唯一独り、輝くアクセサリーを手放さず、華やかな“夢”をファンに与え続けていたのがロビン。本作にも、その姿がしっかりと記録されています。そんな感傷ヌキにして極上なロック映像作品ではあるのですが、このロビンの佇まいには、やはり胸を打たれるのです。まさに「最後の輝き」。この一言に尽きる大傑作映像。今週末、あの時代に胸を焦がしたあなたに贈ります。
