QUEEN who just released “A Day at the Races” and CHEAP TRICK who was on the verge of debut. A new excavation is a live album where you can experience the scene where young British and American heroes line up.
It was “January 14, 1977 Madison performance” that was imbued with such a work. This is a 2-disc audience recording with the opening CHEAP TRICK on disc 1 and the main act QUEEN on disc 2. Here, let’s check the position of the show with the schedule of the headliner QUEEN.

This is 1977 QUEEN. “A Day at the Races” itself was released at the end of 1976, but the tour started in 1977, when the year changed. The Madison performance of this work was the second performance of “North America # 1”, which is also the beginning of the concert. On the other hand, CHEAP TRICK’s debut work “Cheap Trick” was completed in the fall of 1976 and released on February 3, 1977. In other words, this work was also the timing when we entered the countdown stage just before the album debut.
Also, this show is extremely valuable. The opening CHEAP TRICK is epoch-making even from the viewpoint of QUEEN, which is being excavated from the beginning, and it is the world premiere recording of the show where no recording has been known so far. Moreover, “A DAY AT THE RACES Tour” itself is the unexplored region of recording, and it is also the record that updates the oldest.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed such precious site, is a vintage audience that has both a super-realistic site feeling and a powerful core. Speaking of the new excavation audience around this time, it’s no wonder that it’s a gowagowa sound, but this work is different. The glossy sound with no dubbing marks is beautiful, and the core that penetrates the center is dense and powerful. It seems that the balance of the sound output is different between the two bands, but Rick Nielsen’s guitar in CHEAP TRICK and Freddie’s singing voice in QUEEN reach the hand vividly.
However, there are many good things. The basic recording quality was excellent, but the scale and storage conditions were difficult. First of all, although it is a scale, the main QUEEN version is working hard for 79 minutes, but the tape runs out at the end. Some songs were missed. And the saved state. This is also the main QUEEN version, but wow and flutter occurs in some places. There is no hope for a stable immersive feeling.
That’s why it’s not perfect, but the live that you’re sucking in must be super valuable. Let’s organize both sets here.

…… And it looks like this. CHEAP TRICK has a full stage of about 40 minutes, and the energy that accelerates toward its debut explodes. It energeticly draws a group of masterpieces unique to the early days.
On the other hand, the main QUEEN was recorded for about 80 minutes, and the recording ended in the middle of “Liar”. Perhaps this was followed by “In The Lap Of The Gods … Revisited,” “Now I’m Here,” and then rock and roll medley. And the performance of spelling such a set is valuable and interesting. In the early stages of the tour, I often feel unwell, and this work is not a rush of explosion tension. However, it is not a feeling of omission, but a strong sense of trial and error. Especially in the early stages, I tried various singing styles, and there were lots of tunes that I couldn’t hear at other times. For example, “Somebody To Love”. It was the very early performance of the second time, and the harmony of “I try and I try …” has not been decided yet, and Freddie sings by himself. Also, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is now played in 5 minutes except for new songs. Here too, Freddie changes with fake. There may have been a response that the treble was unlikely to come out, but I don’t feel like I’m suffering, and it’s interesting to sing like exploring a unique stage version.
QUEEN at the beginning of the tour and CHEAP TRICK where the activity itself was at the beginning. It is a delicious new excavation album where you can enjoy the super precious live performances of both males. The performances and versions that are different from usual are interesting, and at the same time, the passion for kick-off is fresh. It’s a little maniac because it’s hard to say that it’s a perfect sound, but conversely, a maniac who understands the value is an important work that must be listened to. Please enjoy it carefully.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1977年１月14日マディソン公演」。オープニングのCHEAP TRICKをディスク１に、メインアクトのQUEENをディスク２に配した２枚組オーディエンス録音です。ここではヘッドライナーであるQUEENの日程でショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1977年のQUEEN。『華麗なるレース』自体は1976年末にリリースされていたわけですが、ツアーが始まったのは年の改まった1977年になってから。本作のマディソン公演はその序盤も序盤となる「北米#1」の２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。一方のCHEAP TRICKはデビュー作『チープ・トリック』が1976年秋に完成し、1977年２月３日に発売。つまり、本作はアルバム・デビュー目前のカウントダウン段階に入ったタイミングでもありました。
また、このショウは極めて貴重。オープニングのCHEAP TRICKは元より、発掘の進んでいるQUEENから見ても画期的でして、これまで一切の録音が知られてこなかったショウの全世界初公開録音です。しかも、“A DAY AT THE RACES Tour”自体が録音の秘境ですし、その最古を更新する記録でもあるのです。
そんな貴重な現場を真空パックした本作は、超リアルな現場感と力強い芯が両立したヴィンテージ・オーディエンス。この頃の新発掘オーディエンスと言えばゴワゴワ・サウンドでも不思議はないのですが、本作は違う。ダビング痕が感じられない艶やかな鳴りが美しく、そのド真ん中を貫く芯は密度もみっちりと力強い。２バンドで出音のバランスが違うようですが、CHEAP TRICKではリック・ニールセンのギター、QUEENではフレディの歌声が手元まで鮮やかに届くのです。
ただし、好事魔多し。基本の録音クオリティは素晴らしいものの、尺と保存状態に難がありました。まず、尺ですがメインのQUEEN篇が79分と頑張っているものの、終盤でテープ切れ。数曲が録音漏れとなっていました。そして、保存状態。これもメインのQUEEN篇なのですが、ところどころでワウフラッターが発生。安定した没入感は望むべくもないのです。
というわけで完璧とは行かないわけですが、吸い込んでいるライヴ自体は超貴重に違いない。ここで両者のセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。CHEAP TRICK篇は約40分のフル・ステージを収録しており、デビューに向けて加速していくエナジーが爆発。初期ならではの名曲群をエネルギッシュに描いてくれます。
一方、メインのQUEENは約80分の収録で「Liar」の途中で録音が終了。恐らく、この後は「In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited」「Now I’m Here」そしてロックンロール・メドレーへと突き進んでいったと思われます。そして、そんなセットを綴るパフォーマンスが貴重で面白い。ツアー序盤は調子が乗らない事も多く、本作も爆テンションのブッちぎれ……ではない。しかし、それは手抜きという感じではなく試行錯誤フィーリングが強い。特に序盤はいろいろな歌い方を試していて、他の時期では聴けない節回しが盛りだくさん。例えば「Somebody To Love」。２回目という極初期のパフォーマンスでして、まだ「I try and I try……」のハーモニーも決まっておらず、フレディが独りで歌っていたりします。また、新曲以外だと５分尺で演奏するようになった「Bohemian Rhapsody」。ここでもフレディはフェイクで変えまくり。高音が出そうにないという手応えもあったのでしょうが、苦しんでいる感じはなく、独自のステージ・バージョンを探るような歌い方が面白いのです。
ツアー初期のQUEENと、活動自体が初期だったCHEAP TRICK。両雄の超貴重なライヴを味わえる美味しい新発掘アルバムです。いつもとは違った演奏やバージョンが面白く、同時にキックオフの情熱もフレッシュ。完璧なサウンドとは言いがたいためにややマニアックではありますが、逆に言えば価値の分かるマニアは絶対必聴な重要作。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
