This is a gift that the TMOQ label released the Santa Monica performance on October 23, 1970, and the T analog board “LIVE” was reprinted from the best preserved mint using the latest equipment. RECORDER 1, whose existence has been known since the early 70’s, that is, TMOQ’s two-disc bootleg LP “LIVE (TMOQ 2804)” and “CYMBALINE (2804)”, and the TMOQ series “Dittolino Disc” This is the source I heard on “LIVE (Dittolino Disc)”. This RECORDER 1 source was also recorded as a bonus on Disc 3 of Sigma’s already-released “CREATURES OF THE DEEP (Sigma 39)” (currently sold out / discontinued), but this edition is this “LIVE (Dittolino Disc)”. ) ”2LP master, newly reproduced using the latest equipment. I used a well-preserved mint board owned by the label, so you can enjoy the stately sound of RECORDER 1 in the best condition without any noticeable needle crackling.

Since the master LP is composed of 2 discs / 4 sections from side A to side D, the recording order of this disc also conforms to it as shown below.

It’s not the true flow of the show, and of course it’s not a complete recording of the performance of the day, however, it covers most of the big listening points that are the key to this performance, including the symphonic version of “Atom Heart Mother.” I’m glad that I am there. Since the recording position is different from the main title = RECORDER 2, you can not miss the point that you can enjoy the difference in sound source such as sound and sound image.

In “Atom Heart Mother (Part One)”, the feel of the slide guitar from 4 minutes 16 seconds is different from what you can hear on the main disc, and the scene where the mixed chorus hits the spot for a while in the middle stage (5 minutes 58) (2 to 9 minutes and 42 seconds), you can hear the low-pitched sound of the bass, guitar, and organ, which shows the high quality of the recording. From “Atom Heart Mother (Part Two)”, it started with a fade-in on the B side, but the first half of the song (= track [1]) faded out with a characteristic guitar melody. It will stand up properly from that characteristic scene. The dense concerted dialogue of the band, the orchestra, and the real voice moisturizes the ears with a richer sound, and the movement of the guitar that rises again from around 10 minutes and 40 seconds stands out as much as the main disc.

From “Sing To Me (Fat Old Sun)”, it is the C side. Here too, the way the sounds blend together is clearly captured, and you will be able to enjoy the creative performances that are unique to this day from a different perspective. The sound and voice of the organ, and the guitar that runs through the lines, pass through my ears with a vintage sound with a clear view, and I think that I will be shaken by the joy of entrusting myself to the performance while getting drunk with the depth of the carving of the sound. I will. “Cymbaline” is a fade-in with a slight lack of opening, but the moment it starts, it has a breathtaking atmosphere. You can enjoy the opening and closing of the door and the footsteps of the heels on the way, which is different from the sound image you can hear on the main disc, and the “♪ Cymbal ~ ine!” If you listen to this sound image, you will feel something more painful.

“Mystery” recorded on the D side is also a song that you can enjoy the difference in sound from the main disc from beginning to end, and especially in the decoration scene of the inspirational sound in the first half, you can enjoy the sound image that is comparable to the main disc. ショウの本当の流れではありませんし、当然ながらこの日の公演を完全収録したものでもありませんが、しかしながら管弦楽版の「Atom Heart Mother」を初めとしてこの公演のキモとなる大きな聴きどころは殆ど網羅されている点は嬉しいところです。本編タイトル＝RECORDER 2とは収録位置も異なっていますので、響きや音像と言った音源違いの差が楽しめる点も見逃せません。

「Atom Heart Mother (Part One)」では、4分16秒からのスライド・ギターが本編ディスクで聴けるものとは響きの感触が違っており、中盤で混声合唱に暫くスポットが当たるシーン(5分58秒～9分42秒)でもベースやギター、オルガンの弱音表現がしっかり聴こえ、録音の質の高さを伺わせています。「Atom Heart Mother (Part Two)」からはB面で、フェイド・インでスタートしていますが、曲の前半(＝トラック〔1〕)が特徴的なギターの旋律でフェイド・アウトしており、その特徴的なシーンからちゃんと立ち上がってきます。バンドと管弦楽と肉声という密度の濃い協奏的対話が更に豊かな響きで耳を潤し、10分40秒付近から再び立ち上がってくるギターの動きが本編ディスクに負けないくらい浮き出ているのも特徴です。

「Sing To Me (Fat Old Sun)」からはC面です。ここも音が華やかに溶け合う様子が克明に捉えられており、この日ならではの創意に充ちた演奏が別の視点で御愉しみ戴けるでしょう。オルガンの響きと肉声、そして行間を縫う様に駆け抜けてゆくギターが見通しの良いヴィンテージ・サウンドで耳を通り過ぎてゆき、響きの彫りの深さに酔いながら演奏に身を委ねる喜びに打ち震えると思います。「Cymbaline」は冒頭が僅かに欠けてのフェイド・インですが、始まった瞬間に息を呑む様な雰囲気が広がっています。途中にあるドアの開け閉めとヒールの足音も本編ディスクで聴ける音像とは違う響きが楽しめますし、終盤で2回入る、語尾を上げて特徴的に歌われる”♪ Cymbal～ine ! “も、この音像で聴くとより切ないものが伝わってくるでしょう。

D面一杯に収録されている「神秘」も本編ディスクとは響きの違いが終始楽しめる一曲で、特に前半の霊感に充ちた音の装飾シーンでは本編ディスクに負けない音像が愉しめます。尚、16分06秒で音が一瞬飛んでおりますが、これはマスターテープの劣化か、或いはその部分をつまんでエディットした可能性がありそうです（※リールのテープフリップならこんな短時間の筈が無く、アクシデントがあったならもう少し汚い感じになる筈）。欠けているのは2～3秒程度なので特に気にならないと思いますが、敢えて補填はせず、原盤収録の生々しい姿をそのまま残しました。

★1971年10月23日のサンタモニカ公演は、6年ほど前に登場した「Recorder 2」がこの日の決定的音源ですが、アナログ時代からおなじみの「Recorder 1」も聴き応え満点の素晴らしい録音です。原盤よりダイレクト落としした72分の貴重な記録をこの機会にお楽しみください。
