Peter Gabriel in 1980, who produced the famous board “PETER GABRIEL III (MELT)” and climbed to the heavyweight of the scene as a solo artist. A soundboard album that will pour the live performance into your brain is now available.
“March 7, 1980 Cardiff performance” is recorded in this work. It is the stereo sound board recording. This is Peter Gabriel in 1979/1908. Millard’s masterpiece “SANTA ANA 1980” was a North American leg after the release of “MELT”, but the Cardiff performance of this work completed the album but was not released. It was a concert that was the 13th performance of the “British” leg.
This show was broadcast on FM, and is a staple that has produced a number of pre-existing groups. However, this work is not such a copy or remastered recurrence of such an existing work, but the highest peak master released recently. The quality is just the best ever. There is a feeling of air check in the vivid mix and faint hiss, but the freshness is much higher than the conventional master. The edge that was lost by dubbing in the already released group is firmly left, and there is no roundness or dango feeling. Especially “Start”, “Lead A Normal Life” and “And Through The Wire” are rare songs that were played at that time. Conversely, it may be surprising to remove “No Self Control” in modern senses, but this song entered the regular set after the “IV (SECURITY)” era. This is also a real-time sense that it is not decided which song will become the representative song.

大名盤『PETER GABRIEL III (MELT)』を生み出し、ソロ・アーティストとしてもシーンの重鎮へと登り詰めた1980年のピーター・ガブリエル。その生演奏を脳みそに流し込んでくれるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に記録されているのは「1980年３月７日カーディフ公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。当時のツアーは“TOUR OF CHINA 1984”と名付けられましたが、これは当時のバックバンドの事で、1984年でもなければ中国公演もありませんでした。当店ではマイク・ミラードのプレス名盤『SANTA ANA 1980（Virtuoso 445）』が定番として愛されてもいますので、まずは当時のスケジュールを俯瞰してそれぞれの位置関係を確認してみましょう。

これが1979年／1908年のピーター・ガブリエル。ミラードの名作『SANTA ANA 1980』は『MELT』発売後の北米レッグでしたが、本作のカーディフ公演はアルバムを完成させつつ、リリースには至っていなかったタイミング。「英国」レッグの13公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウはFM放送され、数々の既発群を生み出して来た定番。ただし、本作はそんな既発のコピーやリマスター再発ではなく、最近になって公開された最高峰マスターなのです。そのクオリティは、まさに過去最高。生々しいミックスやうっすらとしたヒスにエアチェック感も漂いますが、鮮度は従来マスターより格段に上。既発群ではダビングによって失われていたエッジがしっかりと残され、丸みやダンゴ感もない。デジタル大全盛の現代基準では「完全オフィシャル級！」と断じるべきか迷うものの、オフィシャルでは望めない“TOUR OF CHINA 1984”を味わえる「公式代わり」にはなってくれるのです。
そんなアップグレード・サウンドで描かれるのは、貴重なフルショウ。ミラードのプレス名盤『SANTA ANA 1980』は警察当局によってショウが強制終了させられてしまうドキュメントが強烈でしたが、本作ではばっちり完遂。『SANTA ANA 1980』では聴けないレパートリーもたっぷり披露する通常コンサートを満喫できる。その内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『SO』の「We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37)」やアルバム未収録の「I Go Swimming」も耳を惹きますが。やはり圧巻なのは名盤『MELT』ナンバーの大盤振る舞い。「No Self Control」以外の全曲が披露されている。特に「Start」「Lead A Normal Life」「And Through The Wire」は当時だからこそ演奏されたレア曲です。逆に言えば、現代の感覚では「No Self Control」を外す方が意外だったりもしますが、この曲がレギュラー・セット入りするのは『IV (SECURITY)』時代になってから。これもまた、どの曲が代表曲となっていくか決まっていないリアルタイム感覚なのです。
プレス名盤『SANTA ANA 1980』では知る由もなかった“TOUR OF CHINA 1984”のフルショウを脳みそに流し込んでくれるサウンドボード・アルバム。その最高峰マスターです。まさに「生演奏版MELT」となる新名盤。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください。
