[The finest audience master of the first day of 1991 RAH Orchestra Night appears! ]

At Eric Clapton, another top-quality master has arrived from our well-known British taper. From the 1991 Royal Albert Hall performance where Clapton set a British box office record with 24 consecutive nights of performances, to the first day of “Orchestra Night” where Clapton performed with a full orchestra, the stage on March 3rd is recorded in ultra high-quality sound. This is a master completely recorded with stereo audience recording. This source was originally released on the same day as the previously released version “19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN” released in the 90’s, but this master is one generation younger and is a low generation master with clear sound quality. In addition, it was a different master with a different tape change point from the excellent sound quality version “EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE” released on the same day by our store in December 2012 and sold out to great acclaim. Therefore, by supplementing the tape change part with “EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE”, it became an almost perfect full-length version. The pause part of Disc 2 3trk, which was the only one missing, is recorded longer than the previous release, and the intro/outro part of the concert is also recorded longer than the previous release, making it an excellent master. This master also has the best sound quality, so by supplementing it with the best sound quality board “EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE”, there is no discomfort or difference in sound quality. The stereo spread is clear, and the delicate sound of the orchestra’s strings and pipes, which is often lost in audience recordings, is interwoven with Clapton’s guitar, bringing out the exquisite sound with full force. The orchestral version of Layla is included without missing the beginning, and you can truly enjoy the real pleasure of a complete recording. The full set of the 1990 Orchestra Night was included in the official live album “DEFINITIVE 24 NIGHTS” released this year, but it was performed on a different day from the day of this work (in addition, the official version was released in 1990). It’s a mix of takes from 2011 and 1991, so it can’t be called a pure full concert). The complete soundboard source for the 1990 Orchestra Night is also available underground, but when it comes to the 1991 version, there are extremely few with good sound quality. Among them, this work can be said to be one of the few definitive editions that delivers a realistic sense of presence as if you could travel back in time to the Royal Albert Hall on that day.

・September 4, 1991: Attended Buddy Guy’s gig at the Roxy in Los Angeles.
・September 26, 1991: Appeared in a comedy show recorded at The Palace in Hollywood with Nathan East serving as the house band leader. The episode was aired on the FOX channel on Sunday the 29th.
・December 1st to December 17th, 1991: Full support for George Harrison’s Japan tour with his own band.

If you look at this, you can see that he was not active at all from March 10th to September. Clapton will take a complete break after completing last year’s Journeyman World Tour and two years of strenuous performances at the Royal Albert Hall, and will be taking a full break to start his life with his four-year-old son Connor. It seems that he was planning to enjoy it. However, on March 20th, that incident happened. Due to the shock, he stopped all activities for six months and spent his days introspecting. This film captures the first day of Orchestra Night, the final leg of “24 NIGHTS”, which had been a success every day before that tragedy. There was no way he could have predicted what would happen 17 days later, and Clapton on this day was at the peak of his excitement as he celebrated his first day of playing with the orchestra. It was a time when his life was focused on playing, and there was not the slightest negative element in his life. As a rock musician, he was right on the big stage. His guitar playing and singing exude a confident energy. His guitar solo was of course improvised every day, so it’s a different play from the official live version. The set list is different from the band formation until this night, such as “Rock Night” and “Blues Night,” and the set that has been carefully thought out for this band version is attractive. Among them, “Concerto 1st and 2nd Movements for Guitar and Orchestra”, written specifically for this collaboration by the late conductor Michael Kamen, who had collaborated with Clapton on movie soundtracks, is the greatest. You could say it’s something to listen to. It is a well-known fact that Clapton cannot read music, as he is a self-taught master of the guitar, but on the other hand, in front of an orchestra that could only play according to the score according to the conductor’s tact, he memorized all the plays. It can be said that it is a very thrilling sound source just to check Clapton’s courage, integrity, and concentration during the actual performance. What’s more, it was an unbelievable and miraculous performance that he made it through the entire 30 minutes without making any mistakes. It is a perfect sound source to realize the greatness of Clapton, who was able to perform a full range of emotional expressions with a single guitar while facing an orchestra full of power. We hope you will experience the excitement of a standing ovation. It’s no exaggeration to say that this part was definitely the highlight of Orchestra Night, and you can’t talk about Orchestra Night without hearing it. In other parts, the full orchestral arrangement of Crossroads, which would have surprised the author Robert Johnson if he listened to it, is something that only Clapton could have done. Same goes for Ray Charles’ Hard Times. All songs have orchestral arrangements by Keimen, giving a different impression to the traditional songs. Clapton is playing on the velvety smooth arrangement. A stage that can only be described as wonderful. Check out Clapton’s achievements in fusing blues and classical music through the guitar once again with this work. With this first day successful, Clapton completed 24 consecutive performances with great success. I can imagine that this feeling of satisfaction was probably the greatest of his career. However, God pushes him to the bottom. His life is really hard. After this, Clapton recovered from George Harrison’s tour support, and after “Unplugged”, he returned to the essence of his origin, the blues. Her appearance changes from a long-haired figure wearing flashy costumes by a famous designer to a simple outfit of T-shirt and jeans, short cut hair, and glasses. It was as if he had lost something important in his life and no longer needed to pretend. Clapton who reached that state is also great, but it can be said that Clapton, who was captured in this work and “shined” by doing something that no one else could do, was also great. 【1991年RAHオーケストラナイト初日の極上オーディエンスマスター登場！】

エリック・クラプトンでは当店お馴染みのイギリス在住重鎮テーパーからまた極上マスターが到着しました。クラプトンが24夜連続公演でイギリスの興行記録を樹立した1991年のロイヤル・アルバート・ホール公演から、フル・オーケストラと共演した「オーケストラ・ナイト」の初日、３月３日のステージを、超高音質ステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録したマスターです。このソースは、元々90年代にリリースされた既発盤「19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN」と同じ日のソースですが、本マスターの方が１世代以上ジェネレーションが若く、音質がクリアなロウ・ジェネレーション・マスターとなっている上に、当店が2012年12月にリリースし、大好評の中で完売した同日の極上音質盤「EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE」ともテープチェンジ個所が異なっているという別マスターでした。そのためテープチェンジ箇所を「EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE」で補填した事によりほぼ完璧な全長版となりました。唯一欠落していたDisc2 3trk の一時停止部分も既発より長く収録されており、コンサートのイントロ/アウトロ部も既発盤より長く収録されているという優れたマスターです。本マスターも極上音質ゆえに、極上音質盤「EXCELLENCE & ELEGANCE」で補填したことにより、違和感、音質の差はまったくありません。ステレオの拡がりが鮮明で、オーディエンス録音では失われがちなオーケストラの繊細な弦と管の響きがクラプトンのギターと織り成す絶妙のサウンドが迫力満点で迫ってきます。冒頭もLaylaのオーケストラ・バージョンが欠けることなく収められており、まさに完全収録の醍醐味を味わうことができます。1990年のオーケストラ・ナイトは、今年リリースのオフィシャルライブ盤「DEFINITIVE 24 NIGHTS」にもフルセットが収められましたが、それは本作の日とは別の日の公演でした（しかもオフィシャル盤は1990年と1991年のテイクのミックスですので、純粋なフルコンサートとは言えないでしょう）。1990年のオーケストラナイトは完全版サウンドボード・ソースもアンダーグラウンドで世に出ていますが、1991年版となると音質の良いものが極端に少ない状況です。その中にあって本作は、当日のロイヤル・アルバート・ホールにタイムスリップできたかのようなリアルな臨場感を届けてくれる、数少ない決定版と言えるものです。

【クラプトンの人生絶頂期の記録】
それではクラプトンの1991年の活動履歴日程を振り返ってみましょう。この年は大変な一年でした。

これを見ていただくと、3月10日から9月まで、一切活動していなかったことがお分かりでしょう。クラプトンは、前年の「ジャーニーマン・ワールドツアー」と2年続いてこなしたハードなロイヤル・アルバート・ホール連続公演が終了すれば、完全休養に入り、4歳になった幼い息子コナー君との生活をエンジョイするつもりだったそうです。ところが、その矢先の3月20日、あの事件が起こってしまいました。そのショックから、彼は6か月間一切の活動を停止し、内省の日々を送っていたのです。本作はあの悲劇に遭遇する前、連日成功を収めていた「24 NIGHTS」の最終行程、オーケストラナイトの初日を捉えたものです。この17日後に起こる事など彼に予想できるはずもなく、この日のクラプトンはオーケストラとの一大共演初日を迎え、奮い立っていた絶頂期にありました。プレイに集中する彼の人生にはネガティヴ要素など微塵もなかった時期でした。ロックミュージシャンとして、まさに最高の舞台に立っていたのです。彼のギタープレイ、歌からは自信に満ち溢れたエネルギーが迸ります。ギターソロはもちろん連日アドリブでしたので、オフィシャルライブ盤とは異なるプレイです。「ロックナイト」、「ブルースナイト」といった、この夜までのバンド編成時とはセットリストも異なり、このバンド・バージョンのために考え抜かれたセットが魅力となっています。中でも、クラプトンとは映画のサウンドトラックでコラボを続けてきた指揮者の故マイケル・ケイメンがわざわざこの共演のために書き下ろした「ギターとオーケストラのためのコンチェルト第１楽章、第２楽章」は最大の聴きものと言えるでしょう。独学でギターをマスターしたクラプトンだけに、彼が読譜できないことは周知の事実ですが、逆に指揮者のタクトに従い譜面どおりにしか演奏できないオーケストラを前にして、すべてのプレイを暗記して臨んだクラプトンの勇気と潔さ、本番での集中力を確かめるだけでも非常にスリリングな音源と言えます。しかも30分間に亘り、ノーミスで乗り切っているという、信じられない奇跡のパフォーマンスです。パワーに溢れたオーケストラを向こうに回し、起伏に富んだ感情表現をギター一本でやってのけたクラプトンの偉大さを実感するには格好の音源であり、演奏終了後の止むことのないオーディエンスのスタンディング・オベーションの興奮を是非味わっていただきたいものです。オーケストラ・ナイトのハイライトは、間違いなくこのパートにあったと言っても過言ではなく、これを聴かずしてオーケストラ・ナイトは語れません。他のパートでも、作者のロバート・ジョンソンが聴いたとしたら、草葉の陰で驚くに違いないフルオーケストラ・アレンジのCrossroadsもクラプトンだけが果たせたものでしょう。レイ・チャールズのHard Timesもそうです。全曲がケイメンによるオーケストラアレンジが施されており、従来の代表曲にもまた違った印象を抱きます。そのビロードのような滑らかなアレンジに乗ってクラプトンは弾き捲っています。素晴らしいとしか言いようのないステージ。ブルースとクラシックを、ギターを介して融合させたクラプトンの功績を今一度、本作でお確かめください。この初日を成功裏に収め、クラプトンは24連続公演を大成功のうちに完遂します。その満足感は恐らく彼のキャリアでも最大ではなかったかと想像できます。しかしそんな彼を神様はどん底に突き落とすのですね。本当に人生とはハードなものです。この後クラプトンはジョージ・ハリスンのツアーサポートをきっかけに立ち直り、「アンプラグド」を経て、彼の原点であるブルースの本質へと回帰していきます。ルックスも有名デザイナーの派手な衣装を纏った長髪姿からTシャツにジーンズというシンプルな衣装とばっさりカットした短髪にメガネという姿に変わっていきます。まるで人生で大事なものを失ってしまった自分にはもはや虚飾は要らないとでも言うように。その境地に達したクラプトンも偉大ですが、本作に捉えられた、誰にもできないことをやり遂げ「輝いていた」クラプトンもまた偉大だったと言えるでしょう。間違いなく、ミュージシャンとして最高峰を極めていたクラプトンを是非本作でご鑑賞ください。
