VIGOTONE’s “LAST FLIGHT” is a masterpiece that put a stone in the situation where only items with dull sound quality were rampant despite such a valuable tour. A stereo sound board recording with the best sound quality, remixed from multi-track by the late Geoff Emerick, and lightly dismissing the previously bimyo audience recording items. As an aside, even though the CD-R was released in 1998, there are still many individuals that do not interfere with playback, and it is fortunate that they are often seen even if they are used.
However, it was a disaster that it was released on CD-R, and after that, the release of the press CD will be repeated under the name of “LAST FLIGHT”. The reason why they all recorded good sales is that it is the complete version of the stereo sound board recording of the 1979 tour and the highest sound quality.
It is also an important sound source in that you can enjoy sophisticated rock sound with the best sound quality, which is completely different from the 1976 Over America Tour where Mike Millard’s master is released this time.

Although it is a must-listen standard sound source for beginners to enthusiasts, of course it also has problems. Although it had reached the stage of completion as a live album thanks to the remix by Emmerich, it was based on what was copied to the cassette like a leaked sound source. It is presumed that this was made for the people concerned to listen back. It may have been dubbed several times and then leaked, especially in the latter half of the concert, which belongs to the B side of the cassette, the muffled sound is remarkable.
Although some of the items released under the name of “LAST FLIGHT” were equalized, none of them addressed the problems in the latter half of the concert. Therefore, in this release, we not only remastered using the latest technology, but also made a new equalization to solve this problem thoroughly.
This eliminated the muffled sound that looked like a cassette outflow sound source, and not only the entire sound source was reborn with a very clean and clear sound quality, but also the discomfort of amplification of the muffled sound in the latter half of the concert was eliminated at once.
Regarding that point, this is another big attraction of the 1979 tour, and it is obvious if you compare it around the classic “Wonderful Christmas time” or “Mull Of Kintyre” that shines in this season. Unlike the previous “LAST FLIGHT” releases, if you can enjoy the concert with clear sound quality until the end, it is an upper version that has been promoted to a standard item that is indispensable for beginners to enthusiasts!

1979年のイギリス・ツアーは結果的にウイングス最後のライブ活動となってしまっただけでなく、セットリストが非常に独特でこの時期でしか聞かれないレパートリー満載ということからマニアの間で高い人気を誇っていました。ところがこのツアーの音源を収録したアイテムはLPの時代からどれも音質のスッキリしないアイテムばかり。1979年という年代を考えると不思議なほど音源に恵まれていなかったのです。それでも非常に貴重なツアーであったことから、マニアはイマイチなオーディエンス録音のアイテムでも懸命に聞きこんだもの。それほどまで貴重な内容を誇るツアーだったのです。1975年や76年と違いこの時のメンバーでのウイングスのツアーが79年しか行われなかったというのも大きい。
スーパーデラックスのリリースが待たれる名盤「BACK TO THE EGG」を引っ提げたツアーであったことから、同アルバムからの曲を大量にフィーチャーしていた点も魅力。それでいてオープニングはそれまで演奏されたことのなかったビートルズナンバーの「Got To Get You Into My Life」から幕開けというのが大胆。また「No Words」にリンダが歌う「Cook Of The House」といった具合に、ウイングス・ナンバーもそれまでのツアーで演奏されたことのない曲がレパートリーに導入されるという、非常に意欲的なツアーであったのです。おまけに回る会場はシアタークラスばかり、辛うじてロンドンだけはウェンブリー・アリーナという選択がまた意欲的でした。

そんな貴重なツアーながら音質の冴えないアイテムばかりが横行していた状況に一石を投じた名盤がVIGOTONEの「LAST FLIGHT」。今は亡きジェフ・エメリックによってマルチトラックからリミックスされ、それまでのビミョーなオーディエンス録音アイテムを軽く一蹴する音質最高のステレオ・サウンドボード録音。もっともグラスゴー公演からはリアルタイムで「Coming Up」がシングルのカップリングとして日の目を見ており、マニアでなくとも正式にライブレコーディングが行われていたことは広く知られていました。
となれば全編を聞きたくなるのが当然なのですが、最初はコンピものCD「BIG MAC’S LIVE TRACKS」で「Old Siam Sir」一曲が小出しされ、次に「GLASGOW 1979」でコンサートの半分がめちゃくちゃな曲順で収録されました。特に後者はリリースされた時点ではありがたがられたものです。
こうなると完全版が聞きたくなるのがマニア心というものですが、そんな思いに応えてくれたのが「LAST FLIGHT」の登場でした。ウイングスのラストツアーから遂に登場したステレオ・サウンドボード録音完全版は世界中のマニアから諸手を上げて歓迎され、当時のVIGOTONEレーベルがCD-Rでのリリースであったにもかかわらず大ベストセラーを記録。余談ながら1998年のCD-Rリリースながら今でも再生に支障のない個体が多く、中古でも頻繁に見かけられるのは幸いといえるでしょう。
ところがCD-Rでのリリースであったことが災いし、その後も「LAST FLIGHT」の名の下でプレス盤CDのリリースが繰り返されるようになります。それらがまたことごとく好セールスを記録したのも、一重に79年ツアーのステレオ・サウンドボード録音完全版かつ最高音質ということに尽きるかと。
今回マイク・ミラードのマスターがリリースされる76年のオーバー・アメリカ・ツアーとはまるで違う洗練されたロックサウンドが最高の音質で楽しめるという点でも重要音源であります。

そんな初心者からマニアまで必聴の定番音源ではありますが、もちろん問題も抱えています。エメリックによってリミックスされたおかげでライブアルバムとしては完成の域に達していたものの、そこは流出音源らしくカセットにコピーされたものが元となっていました。これは関係者が聞き返す為に作られたのだと推測されます。それが何度かダビングされた上で流出したのでしょう、特にカセットのB面に属するコンサート後半は音のこもりが顕著。
「LAST FLIGHT」の名の下にリリースされてきたアイテムのいくつかはイコライズが施されていたものの、コンサート後半の問題にまで取り組んだアイテムというのは皆無でした。そこで今回のリリースにおいては現在の最新テクノロジーを用いてリマスターするだけにとどまらず、この問題も徹底的に解消すべく、新たなイコライズを敢行したのです。
これによってカセット流出音源っぽかった音のこもりが解消され、音源全体が非常にすっきりクリアーな音質に生まれ変わったのはもちろん、コンサート後半にあったこもりの増幅という違和感まで一気に解消されました。
その点に関しては、これまた79年ツアーの大きな魅力であり、今の季節に映えまくるクラシック「Wonderful Christmastime」、あるいは「Mull Of Kintyre」辺りで聞き比べれば一目瞭然。今までの「LAST FLIGHT」リリースと違い、コンサートが最後までクリアーな音質で楽しめるとなれば、改めて初心者からマニアまで必須のスタンダード・アイテムへと昇格したアッパー版です！
