このショウは当時からFM放送されて大定番となってきましたが、その放送はショウの前半のみ。後半をオーディエンス録音で補完したタイトルが無数にリリースされてきました。しかし、本作はその後に発掘された全長版サウンドボード。ゴージャスなフル・ショウを丸ごと楽しめるライヴアルバムなのです。もちろん、長いだけではありません。そのクオリティも極上。歓声も含めてミックスも完璧なら、ノイズレスで艶やかなマスター鮮度も最高。好みによっては『OTTAWA 1987』や公式映像を好まれる方もいらっしゃるかも知れませんが、クオリティ的には本作も同等のオフィシャル級ライヴアルバムなのです。

そして、そのクオリティで描かれるフル・ショウがまた素晴らしい。何よりも嬉しいのはセットリスト。抜粋された映像作品『GLASS SPIDER』より多いのは当然ですが、単にボリュームが多いだけでもない。オープニングを飾るストリングス・アレンジの「Purple Haze」からしてお宝サウンドボードだったりするのですが、それ以上なのが後半に固めて演奏される「New York’s In Love」「Dancing With The Big Boys」「Zeroes」。この３曲は『GLASS SPIDER』のスペシャル・エディションに付属していたフルライヴCDや『OTTAWA 1987』でも聴けなかったレパートリーなのです。これによって新作『NEVER LET ME DOWN』のナンバーは９曲に及び、当時演奏された新曲のすべてが網羅されている。「NEVER LET ME DOWNの生演奏版」に最も近いライヴアルバムでもあるわけです。

そして、そんなセットを演じるバンドも素晴らしい。ツアー４公演目だけに不慣れかと思いきや、そこは完璧に磨き込まれた“GLASS SPIDER TOUR”。極初期にも関わらず凄まじい完成度で迫ってくる。ポップなイメージの強いツアーではありますが、ド直結サウンドボードで描かれたサウンドは意外なほどハードで、高校時代の後輩でもあるピーター・フランプトンも大活躍。かつての名曲群にも、ピーターらしいフレーズを盛り込んでくるのです。

その上で、ダンサブルなアレンジも鮮烈。13年ぶりに復活した「Big Brother」やレギュラー演奏されたのはこのツアーだけだった「All The Madmen」「Sons Of The Silent Age」等々、軽やかなダンス・サウンドで甦った名曲の貴重なバージョンが目白押しなのです。

フルサイズになった大定番の極上サウンドボード。そこに刻まれているのは、ボウイのキャリアの“１つ極み”でもあった“GLASS SPIDER TOUR”の真価です。本作だけでも時代を象徴する大傑作ライヴアルバムではありますが、さらに『OTTAWA 1987』や公式作品『GLASS SPIDER』と併せれば、ワールドツアーを超極上クオリティで総括できてしまう。音楽作品としても、コレクションとしても不可避な特級の１作。この機会に、ぜひお手元にどうぞ。
