From around the main road in spring, the tension of the oasis centered on Liam continued to rise, and it started to get miso from the cancellation of Liam’s appearance on MTV Unplugged, and the subsequent American tour was forced to end with a brother quarrel. アメリカ・ツアー自体も「CHICAGO 1996 DAT MASTER」でドキュメントされていたように、初日のシカゴをリアムがドタキャンしたせいで全編ノエル・ボーカルの一日からスタートしている。既にツアー空中分解の火種は撒かれていた訳ですが、それでもすべての日がダメだったのかと言えばとんでもない。むしろリアムが戻ってきてからアメリカでの数日はハイテンションなパフォーマンスの連続だったのです。それを証明するのが今回のフィラデルフィア。
オープニングの「Acquiesce」からリアムはエンジン全開…というかキレッキレ。心の赴くままに歌いあげている。調子が悪い日は彼にとって関門になってしまう「Some Might Say」に関してもサラリと歌いこなしているのが頼もしい。この曲を歌うリアムの姿を一つとっても96年らしい振り切れっぷりというか、これがもう聞いていて気持ちいいくらいのレベル。そうした辺りがメイン・ロードやネブワースの残火ではないでしょうか。
このテンションの高さに乗ってリアムは曲間でも非常に饒舌。もちろんこのハイパーなパフォーマンスぶりにはアルコールという燃料が使われていた訳ですが、そのはっちゃけたリアムの爆裂テンションがアメリカ人に受けないはずがなく、会場も大いに盛り上がっている。この時期ならではのレア・レパートリーであった「Listen Up」を始める前など、ノエルまで一緒になってオーディエンスを煽り、それに対して彼らも盛り上がるという、これもまた気持ちのいい臨場感。

このキレッキレ・リアムが「Cigarettes & Alcohol」になると少し雲行きが怪しくなり、途中でノエルに助け舟を出してもらったりするのですが、丸投げにならずにサッと歌に戻っているところがこの日らしくもあり、それでいて「兄弟ならではの阿吽」を垣間見させてくれる場面でしょう。イントロを始めた際に聞かれるノエルのハイテンションな絶叫にも驚き。一曲置いて「It’s Gettin’ Better (Man!!)」においてもまったく同様の光景が見られるのですが、ここでもグダグダに陥らず絶妙のタイミングでリアムが歌に戻っているから面白い。
そもそも「It’s Gettin’～」はこの時点だとリリースどころかレコーディング前の新曲と言う扱いでネブワースを始めとした一連の野外マンモス・ギグから披露され始めていたのですが、後の「BE HERE NOW」収録バージョンよりも少しテンポが速く演奏されていて、それを聞きなれた耳には新鮮に映るかと。
ノエル・コーナーになっても会場がよく盛り上がっており、戻ってきたリアムによる「Live Forever」になるとそれまでの飛ばし過ぎが祟ったか、さすがに彼の歌が苦しそう。一部はノエルに歌ってもらっているほどだったのですが、それでも結局は最後まで歌い切ってくれたのがこの日らしい。そしてフィナーレ「I Am The Walrus」になると非常に珍しいハプニングが。そこではノエルが曲の進行を間違えてしまい、リアムが曲を止めさせてやり直すという珍しいパターン。それでも仕切り直されたテイク2でもハイテンションぶりは衰えることがなく最後まで疾走。
この96年らしいハイテンションなフィラデルフィアの一夜を記録してくれたのはCrazy S.ならぬBrian Dというテーパー。彼によるオーディエンス録音は「まるでサウンドボード」というようなイメージの音像とは違いますが、非常に迫力のある音質でこの日のハイパー・パフォーマンスを余すところなく伝えてくれる。程よい距離感とクリアーな音質が絶妙な名録音。大好評「CHICAGO 1996 DAT MASTER」に続き、短命に終わった96年最後のアメリカ・ツアーからフィラデルフィアの名会場スペクトラム（当時は企業に買収され「コア・ステーツ・センター」という名前でした）でのリアムも戻ってきたオアシスのハイパー・ギグを限定プレスCDにてリリース！

For that reason, it was a video that was known among enthusiasts from the VHS era, but what is recorded here is a YouTube that remasters the video with the current technology and synchronizes the sound source of this “PHILADELPHIA 1996”. The version published in. Especially for video, the effect of remastering is great, and you can enjoy it to the end with stable image quality without worrying about deterioration due to aging peculiar to VHS.

Even if I listened to the sound source alone, the high tension of the day was outstanding, but if you look at it with this video, you can see why the band was so sharp, centered on Liam. ..
Liam had already fully opened the engine at the opening “Acquiese” stage, and his specialty “tambourine slamming” exploded. After that, the voltage continued to rise, but alcohol was still the fuel. Not only is there a glass in front of his stage monitor, but Liam’s beer is even on Alan White’s drum stand. He was drinking it alternately, which was the source of high tension.

1996年9月2日のフィラデルフィアでオアシスがいかに振り切れた爆裂パフォーマンスを披露していたかという事が今回の限定プレスCDリリースによって証明されましたが、実は客席から撮影されたオーディエンスショットの映像も存在しています。
アリーナのバルコニーから撮影されたもので、クローズアップはそれほどでもありませんが、終始安定したアングルでキレッキレのリアムを中心としたステージ上の様子をしっかり捉えてくれている優良映像。
それだけにVHS時代からマニアの間では知られた映像だったのですが、ここに収録されているのは現在の技術で映像をリマスターし、なおかつ今回の「PHILADELPHIA 1996」の音源をシンクロさせてYouTubeに公開したバージョン。特に映像の方はリマスターの効果が絶大で、VHS特有の経年による劣化などを気にせずに安定した画質で最後まで楽しめます。

音源だけで聞いてもこの日のハイテンションぶりは際立っていましたが、この映像と共に見ると、なるほどリアムを中心して何故あれほどまでにバンドがキレッキレなテンションであったのかというのがよーく分かります。
リアムはオープニングの「Acquiese」の段階で既にエンジン全開で、お得意の「タンバリン叩き投げ」が炸裂。その後もボルテージは上がる一方なのですが、その燃料となったのはやはりアルコール。彼のステージ・モニターの前に一杯置かれているだけでなく、アラン・ホワイトのドラム台のところにまでリアムのビールが置かれている。彼は交互にそれを飲んでおり、それがハイテンションの素となっていたのですね。
ところが映像で見るとノエルも負けじとテンション高めであったことがこれまたよく分かる。「Moring Glory」の前ではアメリカのコンサートらしくステージからダイブを目指して近寄ってくるオーディエンスがいたようですが、ノエルはそれを絶叫して止めさせていたという。
かと思えば「Cigarettes & Alcohol」のイントロでは笑いながら叫んで観客を煽っている様子もしっかり捉えられていて、CDのところでも触れたように、この曲では途中でリアムが歌うのを止めたところで彼が代わりに歌っているのですが、特に不機嫌になった様子もない。極めつけはあぐらをかいてビールを飲んでいたリアムがエンディングでグイグイとハンマリングを決めるノエルに向かって「兄ちゃん、今日は弾きまくりだな」的な仕草を見せると、彼がリアムにスライディングしながら近づいて弾き続け、それに対して「たまんねー」とばかりリアムがのけぞってみせるという何とも微笑ましい場面。
そしてフィナーレ「I Am The Walrus」ではノエルがミスを犯して演奏がやり直しとなる訳ですが、リアムはその原因を兄の裏声バックコーラスのせいだ…とからかいながら歌ってみせます。最後は客席に降りて延々とサービスタイム。それも終わりに近づいた頃、ノエルはリアムのマイクスタンドをギターに当ててスライドギターを弾くというこの日らしい悪ノリでエンディング。
これほどまで楽しそうに演奏していた兄弟が一週間後には喧嘩してツアーが強制終了となってしまうとは、にわか信じがたいものがあります。言うなればろうそくが消える直前に激しく燃え上がったかの如くハイテンションな一日を視覚で楽しませてくれる貴重な映像ドキュメントをお見逃しなく！
