This work is a summary of the studio recording left by METALLICA in the Mustaine era. It is the definitive edition of the popular “NO LIFE’TIL MEGAFORCE” which was a big hit. It is 17 songs in total. There are other demos of early METALLICA, but most are “garage recording”. This is all about “studio recording” that sets it apart from that. Of course, this work is a single piece that combines all of them in the highest peak version. Let’s introduce each individually.

[Original master of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” (7 songs)] First, “NO LIFE’ TIL LEATHER” was said to be the “most famous demo in the world”. Moreover, it is not the version that popularized METALLICA around the world at that time (hereinafter referred to as “regular version” in this article), but the original version before editing. It has been digitized from the tape that Ron McGoverny, who was a bassist at the time, treasured, and the cut version and conversation voice were recorded in the regular version, and the song order was the same as the recording order. The whole legendary session will be revived.
And the sound is more than that. In fact, this legendary session was recorded on two recorders at the same time, with one of the original masters in the hands of Lars Ulrich and the other in McGoverny. Among them, the Lars master has become the official version and has spread all over the world. It is also called “4th Gene Copy”. On the other hand, the source of this work is the McGoverny master as described above. It is said to be “1st-2nd Gene” that has not undergone editing work etc., and it is much younger than the regular version. Moreover, this work is the highest peak version of the original master. The previous edition “NO LIFE’TIL MEGAFORCE” recorded the original sound version and the digital remastered version, but this work contains the digital remastered version that has been highly acclaimed by overseas enthusiasts. It is a powerful version that approaches the power with the last line that does not cause distortion or deterioration.
And, the content is just a “true debut work”. In the first place, “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” is generally considered a “demo”, but it was originally made to be a debut EP. It was produced by the owner of the punk label “HIGH VELOCITY” (Kenny Kane), but when I listened to the finished recording, Kenny realized that METALLICA was not a punk band. That’s why METALLICA at that time had an unprecedented and innovative sound). And the debut story disappeared, and it was decided to spread as a result demo. In other words, this session was made with the intention of making a record debut, so of course, all the song arrangements have been completed, and it is already more than the usual studio album because it is already live. Moreover, the young spirit of “I’m going to hit the world with this!!” is not enough for the performance, so it is no longer at the level where the word “demo” is used.

[Upgrade master of “MEGAFORCE DEMO” (2 songs)] Next is the upgraded version of “MEGAFORCE DEMO”, which is also the biggest point of this work. It is the only studio recording “Whiplash” and “No Remorse” co-starred by Mustaine & Cliff Version. Recorded on the local radio station “KUSF” in the Bay Area to showcase the new organization Cliff joined to the label companies. This is also a professional recording that is not a garage handmade recording. This and the take were recorded in the previous edition, but a new master was discovered after that.
The sound barrel is totally different. Until now, “MEGAFORCE DEMO” is the default that is covered with noise, and how good it is to master it has been decided. However, this new master has no noise. As expected, you may not be able to expect the luster of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, but with the smooth sound that has not been the destined feeling or the stiff feeling that was destined until now, the genius Mustaine & version’s super valuable co-starring come back!
Also, with the addition of these two songs to “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, all “KILL’EM ALL” songs (other than bass solo) will be available. In other words, this work is the true originator of Dave Mustaine’s “KILL’EM ALL”.

[Official reissue of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” (7 songs)] ▽ In the latter half, “NO LIFE’ TIL LEATHER” appears again. This is another version. The first recorded version was a McGovernry master, but this is a regular version born from the Lars master. However, it is not the version at the time of 1982, it is the officially reissued version of “Record Store Day” in 2015. According to an announcement at the time, it was planned to be reissued on “Record Store Day” with a cassette version, which will be a souvenir, and then the CD version will be released to the public, but the story of the CD version disappears after that (according to one theory) It is said that Mustaine showed a dislike.) As a result, only the cassette version saw the light of day.
However, this cassette version was also a difficult problem. In the first place, it was sold out in a flash as a souvenir. Furthermore, the majority of enthusiasts do not reproduce (or even open) even if they obtain it. I couldn’t listen to the fans all over the world. Of course, what is recorded here is the “2015 reissue cassette version”. Although it is a regular version with the count etc. deleted, its sound is the highest peak ever. Speaking of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, it was difficult to obtain the original release version in 1982, and even if it was possible, there were many wakame things that were repeatedly reproduced. Meanwhile, this work uses a big master owned by Lars himself, and is also subject to official similar digital mastering. Although it is different from the “original master” at the beginning, it is the ultimate version that is an official work.

[Official reissue of the first “Hit The Lights” (1 song)] Lastly recorded is “Hit The Lights” provided for the first press of the compilation board “METAL MASSACRE”. This song was written by James Hetfield during the LEATHER CHARM era, and it is the time when the band has not been completed yet, and it is a genuine “METALLICA oldest recording”. Since James was dissatisfied with the result, after the second press (even in the reissue CD of the 90’s), Mustaine was replaced with another take that takes all the solo, but this is a phantom heard by the black guitarist Lloyd Grant’s solo Official take. The 20th anniversary box of the METAL BLADE label made the first CD, but unfortunately it is out of print now and difficult to obtain for a long time. However, it’s hard to resist the disappearance of regular digitized takes, and I have revived it here. Enjoy the oldest record with more dynamic mastering than the original LP version “METAL MASSACRE”.

……の全17曲です。初期METALLICAのデモは他にもありますが、ほとんどが“ガレージ録音”。それとは一線を画す“スタジオ録音”はこれで全部。もちろん、本作はそのすべてを最高峰バージョンで集成した１枚です。それでは、それぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。

【“NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER”のオリジナル・マスター（７曲）】
まず最初に登場するのは「世界一有名なデモ」と言われた『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』。しかも、当時METALLICAの名を世界中に広めたバージョン（以後、本稿では「正規版」とします）ではなく、その編集前のオリジナル・バージョンです。当時のベーシストだったロン・マクガヴァニーが秘蔵していたテープからデジタル化されており、正規版ではカットされたカウントや会話声も収録され、曲順も録音順そのまま。伝説のセッションが丸ごと甦るのです。
そして、それ以上なのがサウンド。実のところ、この伝説セッションは２台のレコーダーで同時に録音されており、大元マスターの１本はラーズ・ウルリッヒ、もう１本はマクガヴァニーの手に残りました。そのうち、正規版となって世界中に広まったのはラーズ系マスター。それも「4thジェネ・コピー」と言われています。それに対して本作の元になっているのは先述の通りマクガヴァニー系マスター。編集作業などを経ていない「1st-2ndジェネ」とされ、正規版よりグッと若いのです。しかも、本作はオリジナル・マスターの最高峰版でもある。前回盤『NO LIFE ‘TIL MEGAFORCE』では原音版とデジタル・リマスター版を収録していましたが、本作は海外マニアからも大絶賛されたデジタル・リマスター版を収録。あくまでも歪みや劣化が起きないギリギリの線でド迫力に迫るパワフル・バージョンです。
そして、その内容はまさに「真のデビュー作」。そもそも『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』は一般的に「デモ」と思われていますが、本来はデビューEPとなるべく作られたもの。パンクレーベル「HIGH VELOCITY」のオーナー（ケニー・ケイン）が出資して制作されたのですが、出来上がった録音を聴いたケニーは、METALLICAがパンクバンドではないと気づいた（アホみたいな話ですが、それほど当時のMETALLICAが前例のない革新的なサウンドだったわけです）。そして、デビュー話は立ち消え、結果デモとして広まることになった。つまり、このセッションはレコードデビューのつもりで作っていますから、当然、全曲アレンジも完成されており、すでにライヴを重ねているだけに普通のスタジオ・アルバムよりもこなれているほど。しかも演奏には「これで世界に打って出てやる!!」という若い気合いがギュウづめなのですから、もはや「デモ」などという言葉で語られるレベルではないのです。

【“MEGAFORCE DEMO”のアップグレード・マスター（２曲）】
続くのは、本作最大のポイントでもある『MEGAFORCE DEMO』のアップグレード版。ムステイン＆クリフ・バージョンが共演した唯一無二のスタジオ録音「Whiplash」「No Remorse」です。クリフが加入した新編成をレーベル各社にお披露目するため、ベイエリアの地元ラジオ局「KUSF」で録音されたもの。こちらもガレージの手作り録音ではなく、れっきとしたプロ収録です。これもテイクも前回盤に収録されましたが、その後になって新マスターが発掘されたのです。
そのサウンドたるや、まるで別物。今までの『MEGAFORCE DEMO』はノイズまみれがデフォで、それをいかに綺麗にマスタリングするかが優劣を決めていました。ところが、今回の新マスターはそのノイズが「ない」。さすがに『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』ほどの艶は望めないかもしれませんが、今まで宿命だったチリチリ感もゴワゴワ感もない滑らかサウンドで、天才ムステイン＆バージョンの超貴重共演が甦るのです！
また、『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』にこの２曲が加わったことで（ベースソロ以外の）『KILL ‘EM ALL』全曲が揃う。つまり、本作こそが真のオリジネイター：デイヴ・ムステイン版の『KILL ‘EM ALL』そのものなのです。

【“NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER”の公式再発版（７曲）】
後半に登場するのは、再び『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』。その別バージョンです。冒頭に収録したのはマクガヴァニー系マスターでしたが、こちらはラーズ系マスターから生まれた正規版。ただし、1982年当時のものではなく、2015年の“レコードストア・デイ”のためにオフィシャルが正式再発したバージョンなのです。当時のアナウンスによると“レコードストア・デイ”では記念品となるカセット版で再発され、その後にCD盤が一般発売するという計画だったのですが、その後にCD盤リリースの話は立ち消え（一説によるとムステインが難色を示したとも言われています）。結果、カセット版だけが日の目を見たのです。
ところが、このカセット版も難問でした。そもそも記念品としてあっと言う間に完売。さらには入手しても再生しない（というか開封しない）マニアが大多数。世界中のファンが聴きたくても聴けなかったのです。もちろん、ここに収録されているのは 、その「2015年再発カセット版」。カウントなどが削除された正規版ではあるものの、そのサウンドは過去最高峰。『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』と言えば、1982年のオリジナル・リリース版は入手困難でしたし、もし入手できても再生を繰り返したワカメなものも多かった。そんな中で、本作はラーズ本人が所有する大物マスターが使用されており、さらに公式似デジタル・マスタリングも施されている。冒頭の「オリジナル・マスター」とは違いながらも、公式作品然とした究極バージョンなのです。

【最初期「Hit The Lights」の公式再発版（１曲）】
最後に収録されているのは、コンピレーション盤『METAL MASSACRE』の初回プレスに提供された「Hit The Lights」。ジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドがLEATHER CHARM時代に書いた曲で、まだバンドが完成していない時点であり、正真正銘「METALLICA最古の録音」です。ジェイムズが出来に不満だったため、セカンドプレス以降（90年代の復刻CDでも）では、ムステインがすべてのソロを執る別テイクに差し替えられましたが、これは黒人ギタリスト・ロイド・グラントのソロが聴ける幻のオフィシャル・テイク。METAL BLADEレーベル20周年ボックスで初のCD化が実現しましたが、残念ながら現在では廃盤となって久しく入手困難。しかし、正規のデジタル化テイクが消えてゆくのは忍びがたく、ここに復活させました。オリジナルのLP版『METAL MASSACRE』よりもダイナミックなマスタリングで、最古の記録を楽しめます。

以上、全17テイクに及ぶデイヴ・ムステイン時代の究極スタジオ・アルバムです。本作はMETALLICAのスタート地点というだけでなく、MEGADETHの原点……いえ、音楽ジャンル“スラッシュ・メタル”のデビュー・アルバムと言っても良い。ヘヴィメタル史の最強バンドであった「ムステイン入りMETALLICA」の至宝、どうぞ永久保存プレスCDで存分にご堪能ください。
