METALLICA in 1986 introduced the new music “thrash metal” to the whole world with the masterpiece “MASTER OF PUPPETS”. A legendary video that allows you to experience the fierce scene is here.
Included in this work are two superb audience shots that represent the “DAMAGE, INC. Tour”. It is a two-disc set with “December 5, 1986 Quebec City Performance” on DISC 1 and “December 9 Toronto Performance” on DISC 2. On this tour, James was injured and John Marshall supported him, Cliff Burton died in an accident, and the legendary first visit to Japan was realized. Various events happened in rapid succession. This is the 1986/1987 Metallica. The legendary first visit to Japan was realized immediately after Jason joined, but this work is “North America # 4” immediately after that. The Quebec performance (DISC 1) was the 8th performance, and the Toronto performance (DISC 2) was the 11th performance. These two performances left the finest audience footage, both of which are highly honored masterpieces as “DAMAGE, INC. The strongest audience shot”. This work is a two-disc set that set the best master.
“The quality is just superb.” In the first place, it was in the 1980s that the audience shooting with a video camera (instead of 8mm) became common. In 1986, it was a development period where know-how had not yet been established, but this work does not seem to be so. In particular, the Quebec performance (DISC 1) captures the stage from the stands without a shield, and the sense of stability that seems to have used a tripod is outstanding. Even more surprising is the image quality. The glossy screen with no dubbing marks anywhere seems to be a master direct, and even now, more than 10 years after the excavation, there is nothing that surpasses it. Currently, the Nagoya video of the first visit to Japan has been made official, but whether it is spectacular or beautiful, it cannot be compared to such a blurred video.
Also, the Toronto performance (DISC 2) is amazing, not losing to the best Quebec video. This is a shot from the second-floor stand, looking straight ahead at the stage. Writing like this may seem close to the official Nagoya video, but the impressiveness is still incomparable. The dynamic camerawork that repeatedly zooms in and out is wonderful. What’s more, it’s not just active, it’s amazing because it’s stable at the same time. Right after the performance, he couldn’t decide his point of view and was a little violent (about 2 minutes). After that, you can fully enjoy camera work without camera shake. In addition, the voice is also super strong here. The Quebec performance (DISC 1) is also a clear sound, but this one is furiously on and intense like a sound board.

The Quebec performance (DISC 1) was once made into a permanent preservation press as “MASTER OF ASSASSIN (Zodiac 053)”, and the Toronto performance (DISC 2) is also a best master that has been very popular as a gift. Both are the best on-site experience shots ever, but the press title is already sold out, and I do not know when the gift board will be revived next time. Such a situation is not suitable for this video. A masterpiece that can be obtained by anyone at any time. Reprinted as a 2-disc set from the Shades label.

これが1986年／1987年のMETALLICA。伝説の初来日はジェイソン加入直後に実現したわけですが、本作はその直後となる「北米#4」。ケベック公演（DISC 1）はその８公演目、トロント公演（DISC 2）は11公演目にあたるコンサートでした。この２公演は極上オーディエンス映像が残され、いずれも「DAMAGE, INC.最強の客席ショット」と誉れ高き名作。本作はそのベスト・マスターをセットした２枚組なのです。
そのクオリティは、まさに極上。そもそも（８ミリではなく）ビデオ・カメラを持ち込んでの客席撮影が一般化したのは80年代に入ってから。1986年はまだまだノウハウが確立しきっていない発展期だったハズなのですが、本作はとてもそうとは思えない。特にケベック公演（DISC 1）はスタンド席から遮蔽物ナシでステージを捉え、三脚を使ったと思われる安定感もズバ抜けている。さらに驚きなのは画質。ダビング痕がどこにも見られない艶やかな画面はマスター・ダイレクトと思われ、発掘から10年以上が経った現在も超える物がない。現在では初来日の名古屋映像がオフィシャル化されていたりしますが、見応えにしろ、美しさにしろ、あんな滲みまくりの映像とは比較になりません。
そして、トロント公演（DISC 2）も極上ケベック映像を相手に負けていないスゴい。こちらはステージを真正面に見すえた２階スタンド席からのショット。こう書くとオフィシャルの名古屋映像に近いように思われるかも知れませんが、やはり見応えは比較にならない。グイグイと果敢なズーム・イン／アウトを繰り返すダイナミックなカメラワークが素晴らしい。しかも、単にアクティヴなだけでなく、同時にビシッと安定しているからスゴい。開演直後は視点を決めかねて少々暴れる（２分くらい）ところをみると、ここで三脚にセットしたのかも知れません。それ以降は自由自在のカメラワークでも手ブレなしで存分に楽しめる。さらに、こちらは音声も超強力。ケベック公演（DISC 1）もクリア・サウンドですが、こちらは猛烈にオンでまるでサウンドボードのように強烈です。
そんな２公演で繰り広げられるのは、スラッシュ・メタルの桃源郷でもある“DAMAGE, INC. Tour”のフルショウ。直近２公演だけにセットは同一ですので、ここでまとめて整理しておきましょう。

ケベック公演（DISC 1）はかつて『MASTER OF ASSASSIN（Zodiac 053）』として永久保存プレス化されたこともありますし、トロント公演（DISC 2）もギフト等で大好評を博したベスト・マスターです。いずれも史上最高の現場体験ショットなわけですが、プレス・タイトルはとうに完売となり、ギフト盤は次にいつ復活するか分からない。この映像に、そんな境遇は似つかわしくないのです。いつでも、誰でも手に入れられて然るべき名作。Shadesレーベルから２枚組で復刻です。
