What is recorded in this work is “August 8, 1997 Chicago performance”. That stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of “CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”, it was a time when the popularity was so high that two performances in Japan were realized, but at the same time, the golden lineup collapsed due to the withdrawal of Nick Menza. For that reason, the detailed timing of the live schedule is very important. This is MEGADETH in 1997/1998. Nick’s departure was an event in June 1998, but the Chicago performance of this work was about a year ago. It was the 12th performance of “North America # 2” where “Golden 4 people (W Dave / Marty / Nick)” were still firmly aligned.
This show is also known to have been broadcast on FM, and its air check has long been regarded as a masterpiece of the “CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”. This work is the same FM sound board, but it is the highest peak. After all, the origin of this work is not the air check, but the origin. It is a broadcast master CD of “WESTWOOD ONE”. In 1997, the broadcast master also changed from analog LP to CD, and this work is a lossless reproduction from the actual thing.
The quality is exactly “completely official grade”. It has also received the highest evaluation from the MEGADETH completer. As a matter of fact, in the Marty / Nick era, only two official sound boards, the super-famous board “DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995 + 1997”, and the pre-FM master of this work, a total of five (strictly speaking). There are other unplugged ones as well). You can understand how the sound of this work is superb. Moreover, this work is a perfect version with the noise of “Trust” that was in the original sound corrected. It is truly a masterpiece that remains in the history of MEGADETH.
While it was such a masterpiece, why was it a Shades label? There is also a reason. If you have already experienced it, I think it will come to you, but in fact, this broadcast has a slightly unique mix, especially one of the twin guitars is a little withdrawn. It’s not hard to hear, but it’s undeniable that it’s unbalanced.

…… And it looks like this. The performance itself is “that four people”, so it’s the best and of course. On top of that, the delicious ones are “Use The Man” and “FFF” that you can’t hear in “DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995 + 1997”. In particular, “FFF” is a repertoire that I couldn’t even hear in another masterpiece “ROCHESTER 1998”. You can listen to the famous song called “Megadeth version Motorbreath” on the best sound board, and the arrangement sandwiched between “Peace Deals” is also extremely valuable.
Since the restart in 2004, MEGADETH has occasionally released live works, but in reality it should have been a regular release in the “4 people” era with Marty & Nick. The best work to heal the dryness is “DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995 + 1997”, but this work is the second masterpiece after that. The best sound board album with “FFF” that the old slasher also drinks raw spit. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

そんな本作に記録されているのは「1997年８月８日シカゴ公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。“CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”と言えば、二度の来日公演が実現するほどの人気絶頂時代でありつつ、同時にニック・メンザの離脱で黄金ラインナップが崩れてしまった時期でもありました。それだけに、ライヴ日程は細かい時期が非常に重要。当店では最高傑作プレス『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997（Zodiac 222）』や『ROCHESTER 1998（Shades 1286）』といった名作群がお馴染みでもありますので、まずは当時のスケジュールからそれぞれのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

これが1997年／1998年のMEGADETH。ニックの離脱は1998年６月の出来事でしたが、本作のシカゴ公演はその約１年前。まだ“黄金の４人（Ｗデイヴ／マーティ／ニック）”がしっかりと揃った「北米#2」の12公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウはFM放送された事でも知られ、古くからそのエアチェックが“CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”の代表作とされてきました。本作は同じFMサウンドボードでありつつ、その最高峰となるもの。何しろ、本作の元になっているのはエアチェックではなく、その大元。“WESTWOOD ONE”の放送原盤CDなのです。1997年には放送原盤もアナログLPからCDに移行しており、本作はその現物からロスレスで復刻したものなのです。
そのクオリティは、まさに「完全オフィシャル級」。MEGADETHコンプリターからも最高評価を得ているのです。実のところ、マーティ／ニック時代で最高評価されているのは公式サウンドボード２本と超名盤『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997』、それに本作のプレFMマスターの計５本だけ（厳密に言いますとアンプラグド物なら他にもありますが）。いかに本作のサウンドが超極上なのかがご理解頂けると思います。しかも、本作は原音にあった「Trust」のノイズも補整されたパーフェクト版。まさにMEGADETH史に残る大傑作なのです。
それだけの傑作でありつつ、なぜShadesレーベルなのか。そこにも理由があります。既発を体験された方ならピンと来ると思いますが、実はこの放送はミックスが少々独特でして、特にツイン・ギターの片方がやや引っ込み気味。別に聞こえないほどではないのですが、アンバランスなのは否めないのです。
そんな「惜しい！」極上サウンドボードで描かれるのは、最高傑作『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997』とも異なるフルショウ。ここで比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。演奏自体は“あの４人”なのですから、最高で当然。その上で美味しいのは『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997』で聴けない「Use The Man」「FFF」でしょう。特に「FFF」は、もう１つの傑作『ROCHESTER 1998』でも聴けなかったレパートリー。「メガデス版Motorbreath」と言われた名曲を極上サウンドボードで聴けますし、「Peace Sells」で挟み込んだアレンジも極めて貴重です。
2004年の再始動以降、MEGADETHも折に触れてライヴ作品を出すようになったわけですが、本当ならマーティ＆ニックも揃った“あの４人”時代にレギュラー・リリースするべきでした。その乾きを癒す最高作は『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997』ですが、本作はそれに次ぐ第二の傑作。オールド・スラッシャーも生唾を飲む「FFF」入りの極上サウンドボード・アルバム。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
