Engraved on this work is the “June 14, 1987: Osaka Stadium” performance. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of Madonna’s first visit to Japan, it is a big incident involving the general public beyond the Western music scene. I think that many people remember the pattern from the TV broadcast and the official work “WHO’S THAT GIRL: LIVE IN JAPAN”, but this work is a completely different performance. In order to grasp the situation around that, let’s look back from the legendary schedule.

This work, vacuum-packed from such a legendary first day, has a dazzlingly clear sound. 以上、全４公演。「雨天中止」という言葉自体に濃厚な時代感が漂うスケジュールです。オフィシャル映像『WHO’S THAT GIRL』は最終日の後楽園でしたが、本作は真逆のジャパンツアー初日。そして日本は“WHO’S THAT GIRL WORLD Tour”のキックオフ地でもありましたので、まさにワールドツアーの初日でもあった。もっと言えば、３ヶ月後のマイケル・ジャクソンと合わせて「MM旋風」とも呼ばれたものですが、本作はその最初の春一番でもあったのです。
そんな伝説の初日を真空パックした本作は、眩しいほどのクリア・サウンド。いかにも日本洋楽シーンらしいビシッと揃った手拍子も吸い込んでいるのでサウンドボードと間違える事はありませんが、その空気感はクリスタル・クリアに透き通り、そのド真ん中を演奏と歌声が真っ直ぐに届く。その芯はしっかりと手応えたっぷりで、ディテールも鮮明。巨大な“大阪スタヂアム”だけに距離感ゼロは行きませんが、だからと言って遠さも感じないのです。特に鮮やかなのは、まだ20代だった主役マドンナの歌声。厚いコーラスが被っても混じり合わず、「コンバンワ。ミンナ待ッテル」「一緒ニオトウト……踊ッテ！」などの日本語MCも一語一語まではっきりと聴き取れるのです。
上空に大きく開いたオープン・スペースの“大阪スタヂアム”だけに、音を反射する壁も天井もなし。だからこそ実現した反響ゼロなクリアさなわけですが、本作の美音はそれだけでは説明が付かない。実は本作を記録したのは、日本録音史に伝説として語らえる名手中の名手。その手腕は「名門キニー以上」「日本のマイク・ミラード」とまで称されるほどのスゴ腕で、80年代を中心にエリック・クラプトンやジェフ・ベック、ミック・ジャガー、ストーンズ、ポール・マッカートニー等々の歴史的な超名録音を残した偉人でした。本作や今週同時リリースとなるホイットニー・ヒューストンの『BUDOKAN 1986 FINAL NIGHT（Zion-232）』はそんな伝説名手の秘蔵コレクションから発掘された秘宝でもあるのです。
