英国ブルース・ロックの粋であった古き良きWHITESNAKE。その伝統を引き継いだM3の象徴映像がリリース決定です。
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2004年６月バーンリー公演」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。そもそもM3とはバーニー・マースデン、ミッキー・ムーディ、ニール・マーレイ３人の頭文字から命名されたユニット。この３人がかつての白蛇を復刻するプロジェクトを行っていたのは、90年代末から2000年代初頭にかけてのことで、THE SNAKESやTHE COMPANY OF SNAKESとシンガーと名称を変えながらも一貫してクラシック・スネイクの名曲群を演奏していました。良い機会でもありますので、まずはそんな彼らの公式作品と各シンガー達の変遷を振り返ってみましょう。

M3と言えば、元BLACK SABBATHのトニー・マーティンが歌うライヴアルバム『CLASSIC SNAKE LIVE』も有名ですが、その翌年には映像篇DVD『ROUGH AN’ READY』がリリースされました。SNAKES IN PARADISEの名シンガー：ステファン・ベルグレンと元RAINBOWのドゥギー・ホワイトがマイクを分け合う名作だったのですが、マイナーなままに現在は廃盤。本作は、そんな失われしオフィシャル映像をベスト・マスターから復刻したものなのです。
そんな本作のクオリティは（当然のことながら）完全オフィシャル級。単に映像クオリティが優れているだけでなく、ライヴの内容も特級で何よりも本家本元の３人が奏でるジューシーな白蛇の名曲群は本物感たっぷり。それこそ、デヴィッド・カヴァデール率いる再始動WHITESNAKEよりもダイレクトに“あの時代”を甦らせてくれるのです。また、本作は個性のまったく違うシンガー達の歌声もポイント。ここで３人の歌い分けを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。３人のシンガーがマイクを分け合うステージはMICHAEL SCHENKER FESTの白蛇版といった趣ですが、特に一番多く歌うステファンがバカ巧。歴代シンガーの中でも最も知名度が低いのですが、そのウェットでディープな歌声はクラシック・スネイクにジャスト・フィット。ヨルン・ランデほどカヴァデールそっくりではありませんが、それだけに物まね感がなく「どれだけ似ているか」に気を取られることなく、曲の良さ、声の良さをじっくりと味わえる。さらにステファンのステージングも渋い。若い時分のカヴァデールのような大暴れはしませんが、上下デニムで身を固め、マイクを握り込んで滋味深い美声を絞り出す姿はポール・ロジャースを彷彿とさせる。当時のWHITESNAKEよりもさらにブルージーでさえあるのです。
そんないぶし銀のステファンに対し、ロック感丸出しなのがドゥギー。当時の彼はイングヴェイ・バンドに在籍していましたが、本作にもゲスト参加しています。そんなドゥギーは歌声もステージングも猛烈に熱い。ブルースを感じさせない声質だけに深みというよりはパワー。「ブルース・ディッキンソン風」と言われたアクションも健在で、クラシック・スネイクの名曲群を熱唱する。ドゥギーは数々の名ギタリストと共演してきたわけですが、彼は本作をもってRAINBOW／WHITESNAKE両方のオリジネイターをバックに名曲を歌った唯一のシンガーとなったのです。
「本家以上に本物らしい」とさえ言われたM3。その廃盤オフィシャル・プロショットです。バーニー・マースデンが亡くなった今、あの芳醇な“クラシック・スネイク”サウンドが甦る事は二度とない。本作は、その切なさを慰めてくれる映像作でもあります。カヴァデールはいませんが……いや、彼ではないからこそ「“クラシック・スネイク”の真髄」が丸出しになる１枚。どうぞ、ベスト・マスターで復刻させた本作で存分にご体験ください。

Good old WHITESNAKE was the epitome of British blues rock. The symbolic video of M3 that inherited that tradition has been decided to be released.
This work was filmed at the Burnley performance in June 2004. This is the multi-camera pro shot. M3 was originally named after the initials of Bernie Marsden, Mickey Moody, and Neil Murray. These three people carried out a project to reproduce the old Shiroja from the late 90’s to the early 2000’s, and even though they changed the names to THE SNAKES and THE COMPANY OF SNAKES and Singer, they consistently produced classic music. They were playing Snake’s famous songs. This is also a good opportunity, so let’s first take a look back at their official works and the evolution of each singer.

Speaking of M3, the live album “CLASSIC SNAKE LIVE” sung by former BLACK SABBATH member Tony Martin is also famous, but the following year, the video version DVD “ROUGH AN’ READY” was released. It was a masterpiece in which SNAKES IN PARADISE’s famous singer Stefan Berggren and former RAINBOW member Doogie White shared the microphone, but it is now out of print as it remains a minor song. This work is a reprint of such lost official footage from the best master.
The quality of this work is (of course) completely official. Not only is the video quality excellent, but the live content is also top-notch, and above all, the group of juicy Shiroja classics performed by the three original members has a real feel. That is what brings back “that era” more directly than the restarted WHITESNAKE led by David Coverdale. Another highlight of this work is the singing voices of singers with completely different personalities. Let’s sort out the singing of the three people here.

…and it looks like this. The stage where the three singers share the microphone is like a white snake version of MICHAEL SCHENKER FEST, but Stefan, who sings the most, is particularly talented. Although he is the least well-known singer of all time, his wet and deep singing voice is a perfect fit for classic Snake. Although he doesn’t look exactly like Coverdale as much as Jörn Lande, there is no sense of imitation, and you can enjoy the quality of the song and voice without worrying about how similar it is. Furthermore, Stefan’s staging is also bitter. Although he doesn’t go as wild as Coverdale when he was young, he is reminiscent of Paul Rodgers, as he wears denim tops and bottoms, grips the microphone, and belts out a deep, beautiful voice. It’s even more bluesy than WHITESNAKE at the time.
In contrast to Stefan, who is silver and silver, Doogie has a rock-hard feel. He was in the Yngwie Band at the time, but he also makes a guest appearance in this work. Dougie’s singing voice and staging are extremely passionate. The voice doesn’t feel like the blues, so it’s more power than depth. The action, which has been described as “Bruce Dickinson-style,” is still intact, and he enthusiastically sings classic Snake songs. Dougie has performed with many famous guitarists, but with this work he became the only singer to sing a famous song with the originators of both RAINBOW and WHITESNAKE in the background.
The M3 was even said to be “more authentic than the original.” This is the out-of-print official pro shot. Now that Bernie Marsden has passed away, that rich “classic Snake” sound will never be revived. This work is also a video work that comforts that sadness. Although Coverdale isn’t there… no, it’s not him, so it’s a record that brings out the essence of ‘Classic Snake’.
