In 1984, Linda Ronstadt took a world tour with the jazz standard cover collection “WHAT’S NEW”, which took the first step toward maturity from the rock singer line.
The bold change of direction was warmly faced by the fans at that time, and the album was a big hit. That said, it’s certainly a time that’s often overlooked now, compared to her in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, when she was at her peak in the general sense.
However, there is no doubt that it was a time when she produced wonderful albums and tours, and the shocking audience album that once again conveyed the wonderful singer’s performance at this time was “BUDOKAN 1984”.
Linda, who realized her performance in Japan in the spring, went on a tour in the United States in response to the big hit of “WHAT’S NEW”. The first of these was the live video “IN CONCERT-WHAT’S NEW”, which was shot before the concert in Japan and was shot in Santa Barbara.
After that, the tour will be held intermittently, but from July to September, it will be a further tour of the United States. However, there was a tendency that the sound source and video from the tour were limited to the first half of the same year, such as the previous live video and the famous board “BUDOKAN 1984”.
This time, the show that was held at Radio City Music Hall in September will be released to the best audience. This is an outstanding sound quality, but now it is the “Two Of Us” team that continues to discover the precious audience of the 80’s live that has captured the precious time with wonderful sound quality.
This time is also amazing quality only for “Two Of Us”, which has released only the eighties live sound source with excellent sound quality so far. Basically, the sound image is on, but Linda’s singing voice is close to it. The balance of her singing voice seems to be an illusion that it is a sound board.
Yes, the quality surpasses that masterpiece “BUDOKAN 1984”. However, now that it is a minor time, it will be released on a crying CD-R this time, but it is a high-level audience recording that is not strange even with a press CD.
Since “WHAT’S NEW” was a big hit, the audience was not confused by Linda’s standard singer heard here, but rather it was a lot of excitement from the opening. The enthusiasm is strange because it is a stage at the historic venue called Radio City Music Hall.
Above all, the transition from a rock singer to an adult singer who sings the jazz standard was a success, and Linda’s singing here was imposing.
The set list itself has exactly the same composition as “BUDOKAN 1984”, but it is a stage half a year after the recording of the previous live video, and she is full of confidence that she has done the tour so far. .. リンダ・ロンシュタットがそれまでのロックシンガー路線から成熟への第一歩を踏み出したジャズ・スタンダードのカバー集「WHAT’S NEW」を引っ提げたワールド・ツアーが行われたのは1984年。
大胆な方向転換も当時はファンに暖かく向かい入れられてアルバムも大ヒット。とはいえ一般的な意味での絶頂期であった1970年代半ばから80年代初頭の彼女と比べれば今となっては見過ごされがちな時期であるのも確か。
しかし素晴らしいアルバムやツアーを生み出した時期であるのも間違いなく、改めてこの時期の見事なシンガーぶりを伝えてくれた衝撃のオーディエンス・アルバムが「BUDOKAN 1984」でした。
そうして春に来日公演を実現させたリンダは「WHAT’S NEW」の大ヒットを受けてアメリカでもツアーを敢行。その第一弾は来日公演の前に行われ、サンタ・バーバラで撮影されたのがライブビデオ「IN CONCERT-WHAT’S NEW」だったのです。
その後もツアーが断続的に行われますが、7月から9月にかけてはさらにアメリカをくまなく回る行程。ところが先のライブビデオや名盤「BUDOKAN 1984」といった具合にツアーからの音源や映像が同年の上半期に限られたきらいがありました。
今回は9月にラジオシティ・ミュージック・ホールで行われたショーの模様を極上オーディエンスにてリリース。これが抜群の音質なのですが、今となっては貴重な時期を素晴らしい音質で捉えてくれたのは80年代ライブの貴重オーディエンスを発掘し続けてくれている「Two Of Us」チーム。
これまでも素晴らしい音質のエイティーズ・ライブ音源ばかりを公開してきてくれた「Two Of Us」だけに今回がまた驚きのクオリティ。基本的に音像がオンなのですが、それに輪をかけてリンダの歌声が近い近い。彼女の歌声のバランスはサウンドボードかと錯覚してしまいそうなほど。
そう、あの名盤「BUDOKAN 1984」をも凌駕するクオリティ。ですが今となってはマイナーな時期ということもあって今回は泣く泣くCD-Rでのリリースとなってしまうのですが、本来であればプレスCDでも何らおかしくないハイレベルなオーディエンス録音。
「WHAT’S NEW」が大ヒットしたこともあり、ここで聞かれるリンダのスタンダード歌手ぶりにも観客はまるで戸惑いがなく、むしろオープニングから大いに盛り上がっている。それがラジオシティ・ミュージック・ホールという由緒ある会場でのステージということもあり、その熱気は異様なほど。
何よりロックシンガーからジャズ・スタンダードを歌う大人の歌手への転身がことのほか上手くいって敢行されたツアーを成功裏に進めていただけのことはあり、ここでのリンダの歌いっぷりは堂々たるもの。
セットリスト自体は「BUDOKAN 1984」とまったく同じ構成なのですが、それや先のライブビデオの収録からは半年が経過したステージであり、それまでのツアーをこなしてきた自信が満ち溢れている。何しろ音質が最高レベルのオーディエンス録音ですので、そんな見事なパフォーマーぶりもリアルに伝わってくる。
彼女の1984年ライブ上半期を代表するのが「BUDOKAN 1984」だとすれば、下半期を代表する衝撃の発掘。ビッグバンドを従えて歌い上げるリンダの歌声に酔いしれてください。これは驚きの音質です。
