Moreover, this sound board is in the “RAM IT DOWN” era … In other words, it is the only line recording of “MERCENARIES OF METAL Tour”. It is also the one and only sound board live of “RAM IT DOWN” numbers such as “Ram It Down”, “Come And Get It” and “Heavy Metal”.
The legendary sound board was finally made into a press … Yes, the “Omoto” that I had dreamed of was unearthed! The “Omoto” is the transcription disc “I 88-17” produced by WESTWOOD ONE. It was directly digitized from the broadcast master before getting on the radio waves !!
It is clear that just listening to the opening / ending of WESTWOOD ONE, which has never existed before, is the origin, but more than that is the sound itself that goes through the whole story. It can only be called “completely official class”. If you listen to this work even once, the sound of the existing group is trapped, the sense of stability is not good, and you can not listen to the localization in reverse. Again, just in case, the existing group has also been praised as “official class”. The masterpieces that I thought were so wonderful faded in one shot.
Moreover, this work is the ultimate version of such a transcription master that has been further refined by mastering. While the master that appeared on the net seems to be analog, the texture that can not be cut off remained, but this work finished the range as wide as possible. If you have the original sound on the net, please compare it with headphones. There is a feeling that the snare and bass drum are hit in deep places, and the dynamism is dramatically increasing. Even though I haven’t earned any unsophisticated sound pressure, the feeling of an official work has increased dramatically.
★ Note ★ Here are two maniac points for enthusiastic collectors. First of all, the song order after “Living After Midnight” at the end is different from the actual show, but this is the broadcast order. The editing between songs is also neatly arranged, so in this work it is recorded as broadcast without forcibly changing it. In addition, there are versions with “Beyond the Realms of Death” added, including our gift, but this is a separate broadcast of only one song. The sound is also different, so I decided not to use it in this work (please enjoy the “Beyond the Realms of Death” with the bonus CDR). ……と、このようになっています。シレッと公式作も紛れていますが、他作品も並べておかしくない超極上品ばかり。本稿に目を留められた方ならどれか１本は体験された事があると思いますが、本作はこの一群に方を並べるもの。『ターボ』の隣に『PRIEST…LIVE!』が置かれるように、このサウンドボードは『ラム・イット・ダウン』の隣に置かれるべきライヴ篇なのです。
しかも、このサウンドボードは『RAM IT DOWN』時代……つまり”MERCENARIES OF METAL Tour”唯一のライン録音。「Ram It Down」や「Come And Get It」「Heavy Metal」といった『RAM IT DOWN』ナンバーの唯一無二のサウンドボード・ライヴでもあるわけです。
【WESTWOOD ONEの放送原盤が待望の発掘】
これだけの大定番サウンドボードだけに、当店でもギフト他で何度もご紹介してきたわけですが、永久保存プレス化は実現してきませんでした。その原因は「本当にベストのマスター？」という疑念が晴れなかったから。既発を１つでも体験された方なら、いわゆる「オフィシャル級」なのはご存知だと思いますが、検証してみると1991年イタリア製ブートレッグが元になったものばかりだった。もちろん、それをリマスターする事もできたのですが、あまりにも決定的なサウンドボードだけに「大元が発掘されるのでは……」の夢が引っかかって踏み切れずにいたのです。
そんな伝説のサウンドボードが遂にプレス化……そう、夢にまで見た「大元」が発掘されたのです！ その「大元」とは、WESTWOOD ONE制作のトランスクリプション・ディスク『I 88-17』。電波に乗る前の放送原盤からダイレクトにデジタル化されたものなのです!!
これまでなかったWESTWOOD ONEのオープニング／エンディングが聴けるだけでも大元なのは明らかですが、それ以上なのが全編を貫くサウンドそのもの。もう「完全オフィシャル級」としか言いようがない。本作を一度でも耳にしてしまうと、既発群のサウンドは籠もっていて、安定感もイマイチな上に定位まで逆で聴いていられない……。念のために繰り返しますが、既発群も「オフィシャル級」と絶賛されてきた。あんなに素晴らしいと思ってきた名盤達が一発で色あせてしまったのです。
しかも、本作はそんなトランスクリプション・マスターをさらにマスタリングで磨き上げた究極盤。ネットに登場したマスターはアナログらしい半面、ヌケ切れない質感が残っていましたが、本作は極限までレンジをワイドに仕上げた。もしネット原音をお持ちの方でしたら、ぜひヘッドフォンで聴き比べていただきたい。スネアやバスドラが深い所でヒットしている感覚があり、格段にダイナミズムが増している。無粋な音圧稼ぎなどしていないのに、オフィシャルっぽい作品感もグッと増しているのです。
★注★ ここで熱心なコレクター諸氏のためにマニアックなポイントを２つ。まず終盤「Living After Midnight」以降の曲順が実際のショウとは異なっていますが、これこそが放送順。曲間の編集も綺麗に整っていますので、本作では無理に変えずに放送通りに収録しています。また、当店ギフトを始め「Beyond the Realms of Death」が追加されたバージョンも出回っていますが、これは１曲だけ別放送を繋げたもの。音も違ってチグハグなので、本作では不採用としました（その「Beyond the Realms of Death」はボーナスCDRでお楽しみください）。
【激レア曲も満載の重金属パラダイス】
そんな究極サウンドで描かれるショウは、まさに重金属パラダイス。当時の彼ら（特にグレン）は『TURBO』のポップ路線を苦々しく思っていたらしく、ヘヴィ路線へ一気に転換。激レアな『RAM IT DOWN』ナンバー（デイヴ・ホランドの生ドラム版！）だけでなく、「The Hellion/Electric Eye」をオープニングに回帰させ、70年代ナンバーも復活。“重金属ベスト”で迫っていました。前述のように直近のライヴ盤と言えば公式『PRIEST…LIVE!』となりますので、比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

前作からは「Turbo Lover」だけに留め、憂いを湛える70年代クラシックスとハード・テイストで押し切る正調プリースト節のショウです。元々「ポップなTURBO／ヘヴィなRAM IT DOWN」は２枚組になるハズの姉妹作であり、そのコンセプトはライヴ・セットにも反映されている。スタジオ作がポップ／ヘヴィの姉妹作だったように、本作も個性が反対な「PRIEST…LIVE!の続編」ともなっているわけです。

The main press CD is a super masterpiece that is both “RAM IT DOWN’s live version” and “PRIEST … LIVE!’S sequel”. It is an absolute board that boasts the same value as the official masterpieces. The bonus is disproportionate to half-baked audience recordings. Therefore, we have prepared a superb compilation that can completely eliminate the official rare tracks of the “TURBO” & “RAM IT DOWN” era.
9 tracks of treasures are recorded in this work. It can be roughly divided into three sections, so let’s introduce each one individually.
“Turbo Lover (Hi-Octane Mix)” was made into a CD with “PRIEST, LIVE AND RARE”, but it has been out of print for a long time. “The Hellion Kid” who worked on the remix is DJ Freddie Bastone, who is also known for remixes such as QUEEN, RADIOHEAD, and Rod Stewart. You can enjoy the version that symbolizes the time when you tried to cut into the times with the pop route for 7 minutes and 21 seconds.
And the other “Blood Red Skies (Extended Remix)” is rare. The album take was also a blockbuster version of 7 minutes 51 seconds, but this is a longer blockbuster version of 10 minutes 33 seconds. Moreover, the work is elaborate. It’s not a strangely chopped remix, but a more profound and long finish while cherishing the world view of the song. This is a must-listen track with deep highlights that deepen the climax while layering vocals around the song. [Edit version (4 songs, 5 tracks)] The following section is a short edited version for singles. “Turbo Lover” contains two types, “Single Edit (4 minutes 40 seconds)” which is a shortened album track and “Hi-Octane Mix Short Version (3 minutes 59 seconds)” which is a shortened remix version. .. Especially rare is “Hi-Octane Mix Short Version”, which is recorded only on the US version of the single “Turbo Lover”. It is a masterpiece take that is cleaner than the full-length version and you can taste only the taste of the remix. [Other rare tracks (2 songs)] Up to this point, the songs were recorded on the single / promo board, but at the end there are two more rare tracks. First of all, “You Are Everything” is a demo from the session that took place before “RAM IT DOWN”, Rob said “I want to release it someday”, but Glen refused “I will never release it” What you are doing. It was edited and released in about 1 minute just by touching it.
The content is a cover of THE STYLISTICS recorded with Eurobeat producer team Stock Aitken Waterman, as it was talked about as “The steel god sings Philadelphia soul !?”. It’s a rare collaboration that Glenn can accept to reject, but it’s interesting enough to understand that Rob, who has even experienced 2WO, wants to put it out without hesitation. In addition to this cover, the original songs “Run around” and “I Will Return” were also recorded, but this is completely unreleased. By the way, Pete Waterman says, “It was the best song I’ve ever done, but I’m surprised that we made metal.”
And the last recorded soundboard live of “Beyond The Realms Of Death”. It is the same as the main press CD, “August 7, 1988 New Haven Performance”. As mentioned in the explanation of the main story, there are versions of this take that are connected to each other, but the sound is different because the broadcast is different. Since it is so different that it can not be processed even by mastering, it was recorded in this work instead of the main part.
“TURBO” & “RAM IT DOWN” which was originally supposed to be one work. In the end, it was a separate work, but it was pierced by a soul that challenged the times. Introducing synth guitars and drum machines in search of new sounds, collaborations with other style games, remixes, etc … It was a unique time unlike any other era. そんな本作に収録されているのは９トラックの秘宝たち。大きく３つのセクションに分けられますので、それぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【長尺リミックス・トラック（２曲）】
まず登場するのは「Turbo Lover」の”ハイオクタン・ミックス”と、「Blood Red Skies」の“エクステンド・リミックス”。どちらもアルバム・テイクよりも大幅に長尺な拡張版です。
「Turbo Lover (Hi-Octane Mix)」は『PRIEST, LIVE AND RARE』でCD化されましたが、長らく廃盤。リミックスを手掛けた「The Hellion Kid」とはDJのフレディ・バストーンのことで、QUEENやRADIOHEAD、ロッド・スチュワート等のリミックスでも知られる人物。ポップ路線で時代に切り込んでいこうとした当時を象徴するバージョンを７分21秒に渡って楽しめます。
そして、もう一方の「Blood Red Skies (Extended Remix)」こそがレア。アルバム・テイクも７分51秒の大作でしたが、こちらは一層長い10分33秒の超大作バージョンなのです。しかも、出来が凝っている。妙ちくりんに切り刻んだリミックスではなく、キチッと曲の世界観を大事にしながら、より重厚・長大に仕上げている。曲のあちこちのヴォーカルを重ねながら、絶頂を幾層にも深めたハイライトがディープな必聴トラックです。
【エディット・バージョン（４曲・５トラック）】
続くセクションは、シングル用に短く編集されたエディット・バージョン。「Turbo Lover」はアルバム・トラックを短くした「Single Edit（４分40秒）」と、リミックス版を短くした「Hi-Octane Mix Short Version（３分59秒）」の２種を収録しています。特にレアなのは「Hi-Octane Mix Short Version」で、シングル『Turbo Lover』の米盤にのみに収録。全長版よりもスッキリとしていて、リミックスの旨みだけが美味しく味わえる傑作テイクです。
【その他のレア・トラック（２曲）】
ここまではシングル／プロモ盤に収録されていた曲ですが、最後はもっとレアな２トラック。まず、「You Are Everything」ですが、これは『RAM IT DOWN』の前に行われたセッションからのデモで、ロブが「いつかリリースしたい」と言いつつ、グレンが「絶対に出さない」と拒否しているもの。さわりだけ約１分に編集されて公開されました。
その内容はユーロビートのプロデューサーチーム、ストック・エイトキン・ウォーターマンと共に録音されたTHE STYLISTICSのカバーで、「鋼鉄神がフィラデルフィア・ソウルを歌う!?」と話題になった通り。グレンが拒絶するのも十分納得できる珍コラボながら、2WOさえ経験済みのロブなら臆せず出したかがるのも理解できるほど面白い。このカバーの他、オリジナル曲「Runaround」「I Will Return」も録音されたそうですが、こちらは完全未発表のままです。ちなみに、ピート・ウォーターマンは「これまでに手掛けた中でも最高の曲だったよ。でも、僕達がメタルを作ったことに驚かれるけどね」だそうです。
そして、最後に収録されているのは「Beyond The Realms Of Death」のサウンドボード・ライヴ。本編プレスCDと同じ「1988年８月７日ニューヘイヴン公演」のものです。本編解説でも触れましたが、このテイクをムリヤリ繋いだバージョンも出回っていますが、放送が違うために音も異なる。マスタリングでも処理できないほど違うため、本編ではなく、本作に収録致しました。
元々１つの作品になるはずだった『TURBO』＆『RAM IT DOWN』。結局は別々の作品になったわけですが、時代に挑戦する魂で貫かれていました。新しいサウンドを模索したシンセ・ギターやドラム・マシンの導入、他流試合コラボ、リミックス等々……他のどの時代とも違うユニークな時期でした。本編プレスCDは『TURBO』『PRIEST…LIVE!』『RAM IT DOWN』に続く最後の１ピースを埋める準オフィシャル作品であり、本作は独特なサウンドを味わい尽くすレア・トラック集。どうぞ、併せて存分にご堪能ください。
